The ranking measures renewable generating capacity already operating—not revenue, market value, total company capacity, or projects still in development. Its figures are reported on different dates, so treat the order as a practical comparison rather than a single-date audited league table.
The 10 biggest renewable energy companies by operating capacity
The table follows IPPData’s ranking of renewable independent power producers and uses its reported operational figures. The dates are the latest company-specific dates displayed in that table; they are not synchronized. IPPData’s methodology may include attributable or equity capacity, so ownership and accounting treatment are not necessarily identical across companies.

What this ranking measures—and what it does not
“Biggest” can refer to several different measures. This list uses renewable operational capacity: generating assets that are in service, measured in gigawatts (GW). It does not rank companies by annual electricity generation, revenue, market capitalization, or total power-fleet size. Those measures can produce a different order.

Operating capacity also differs from a company’s pipeline of planned projects or a broader portfolio that includes projects under construction, contracted, or otherwise secured. IPPData separates operational and attributable/equity figures from secured or contracted capacity and total portfolio capacity; its ranking excludes companies that disclose only pipeline or portfolio figures. See its capacity definitions and ranking.
Why the figures are not perfectly comparable
Reporting dates differ
Nine figures are dated December 31, 2025, except Brookfield Renewable’s December 31, 2024 figure and Adani Green Energy’s March 31, 2026 figure. Capacity can change as projects enter service, are sold, or are reclassified, so the table is not a snapshot of all ten companies on one date.
Rank #2
Ownership and accounting bases differ
Capacity may be reported as the full nameplate capacity of an asset or in proportion to the company’s ownership. Company accounting can also treat subsidiaries and minority investments differently. For example, RWE reported 19,160 MW of renewable capacity at year-end 2024 in its annual report; its IFRS figure counts fully consolidated capacity in full and generally excludes minority shareholdings. That illustrates why a number from one company filing may not match a secondary ranking’s normalization exactly. See RWE’s annual reports.
Renewable-only capacity is not a company’s total fleet
A utility or integrated energy company may own fossil-fuel, nuclear, and renewable assets. Its total installed capacity should not be read as its renewable capacity. Iberdrola, for instance, reports more than 56,800 MW of installed capacity worldwide at the end of Q1 2026, while separately reporting renewable indicators; those totals are not interchangeable. See Iberdrola’s company information.

How to read the leaders
Enel Green Power, ENGIE, and Iberdrola lead this ranking
The first three positions are held by Enel Green Power (61.9 GW), ENGIE (57.2 GW), and Iberdrola (46.2 GW), each with a December 31, 2025 date in IPPData’s table. The ranking supports a comparison of reported operating scale; it does not establish that one company generates more renewable electricity, earns more from renewables, or has a more valuable business.
Brookfield Renewable and ACWA Power are close in reported scale
Brookfield Renewable’s 44.8 GW is dated a year earlier than ACWA Power’s 43.0 GW figure, dated December 31, 2025. Because the reporting dates and potentially the ownership bases differ, the numerical gap should not be treated as a like-for-like measure of current relative size.
Rank #4
The remaining places span integrated energy and power companies
TotalEnergies, Statkraft, RWE, EDP Renováveis, and Adani Green Energy complete the ten. Their positions are based on renewable operational capacity in the cited ranking, not on a common business model or a consistently defined technology mix. The available ranking does not provide a harmonized company-by-company comparison of technology or geographic footprint.

The ranking sits within a rapidly growing industry. The International Energy Agency reports that 800 GW of renewable capacity was added worldwide in 2025; it notes that some regional figures are estimates because complete full-year data were not available. Solar PV accounted for more than three-quarters of those additions, and wind accounted for 20%. These are global additions across the sector, not additions by the ten companies in this list. See the IEA’s Renewables 2025 report.

For a longer statistical baseline, the International Renewable Energy Agency’s Renewable Capacity Statistics 2025 covers installed renewable power capacity from 2015 through 2024. For most countries and technologies, its data reflect capacity installed and connected at year-end.
What the ranking means for readers comparing energy companies
Operating capacity is a useful scale measure, but it is only one input into an investment or business comparison. A larger fleet does not by itself establish stronger returns, lower risk, better growth prospects, or a higher share price. Investors comparing companies should also examine how capacity is owned and reported, the technologies and markets involved, financing and debt, project development exposure, and financial results. Those questions require company-specific filings and consistent definitions; the ranking alone does not answer them.
