This is a U.S. guide to used SUVs priced below $30,000 before taxes, registration, dealer fees, and financing. The price ceiling is not an out-the-door budget, and the figures below are market snapshots—not quotes for a specific vehicle. Among the strongest evidence-backed choices are the 2023 Honda CR-V and 2025 Mazda CX-5, both rated 8.0/10 for reliability by iSeeCars in its 2026 used-SUV analysis. The best fit depends on the size you need, the individual vehicle’s condition, and the model-year evidence available.

How to read this list

This is a cross-size shortlist, not a claim that a subcompact, compact, and three-row SUV are interchangeable or that the models form one precise, universal ranking. The first seven entries have specific model-year ratings or price data in iSeeCars’ 2026 used-SUV material. The final three are additional candidates in its broader lists; available evidence is thinner, so they are presented as alternatives rather than as reliability leaders.

iSeeCars describes its broad 2026 longevity analysis as covering more than 312 million vehicles. Its small-SUV Best Car Rankings page says its rankings draw on more than 12 million vehicles for longevity and value retention and incorporate NHTSA safety data. Those publisher-specific ratings can help narrow a search, but they do not certify an individual vehicle or predict its remaining life.

Other sources measure different things. Consumer Reports’ used recommendations and tested fuel economy, J.D. Power’s three-year dependability study, and Edmunds’ historical residual-value estimates should not be combined into a single reliability score. A well-maintained example with a clean history can be a better buy than a higher-ranked model with neglected maintenance or accident damage.

Best used SUVs under $30,000 by size and use

1. 2023 Honda CR-V — strongest compact-SUV starting point

iSeeCars lists the 2023 CR-V at 8.0/10 for reliability, with an average used price of $29,478 in its 2026 page snapshot. That average sits close to the stated price ceiling, so check the actual mileage, trim, region, and condition before treating it as a budget fit.

Consumer Reports also recommends the 2022 CR-V as a used small SUV. In its 2026 Buying Guide, it reports 28 mpg overall for its test of the 2022 model’s 1.5-liter turbo. That is a Consumer Reports test result for that configuration, not a guarantee for every CR-V or driver.

2. 2025 Mazda CX-5 — compact choice with room below the cap in the snapshot

The 2025 CX-5 receives an 8.0/10 iSeeCars reliability rating and has a listed average used price of $28,683 in the 2026 snapshot. Compare individual vehicles for service history, mileage, equipment, and the space you need; an average price does not establish the condition or value of a particular listing.

3. 2024 Subaru Outback — for buyers who value a wagon-like layout

iSeeCars classifies the Outback as an SUV and lists the 2024 model at 7.9/10, with an average used price of $29,740. Its lower, wagon-like body is a different fit from a conventional taller SUV, so consider whether its seating and cargo layout suits your household before comparing it with compact crossovers.

4. 2022 Toyota RAV4 — compact alternative with strong value-retention evidence

iSeeCars lists the 2022 RAV4 at 7.8/10 for reliability and a $27,688 average used price; its value-retention score is 8.8/10. Consumer Reports recommends 2021–22 RAV4 Hybrid models as used small SUVs and reports 37 mpg overall in its test. That fuel-economy figure is for the tested hybrid, not every RAV4 powertrain.

5. 2024 Subaru Forester — prioritize utility and verify the specific setup

The 2024 Forester is listed at 7.6/10 with an average used price of $29,733 in iSeeCars’ 2026 small-SUV ranking. Its utility may suit buyers who need a practical all-weather vehicle, but do not assume that all-wheel drive makes ownership cheaper. Compare the actual vehicle’s maintenance, condition, and equipment with your needs.

6. 2025 Honda HR-V — smaller, highly rated subcompact

iSeeCars names the 2025 HR-V its leading under-$30,000 used subcompact SUV, with an 8.4/10 reliability rating. It is worth considering if a smaller footprint works for you; it should not be treated as having the passenger or cargo space of a compact SUV. The cited material does not provide an average used price for this model in the figures summarized here.

7. 2020 Toyota Highlander — three-row candidate

iSeeCars identifies the 2020 Highlander as its leading used midsize SUV under $30,000 and its top three-row model in that price category, with a 7.8/10 rating. A 2020 vehicle will be older than the compact models above, making maintenance records, mileage, inspection findings, and the exact seating configuration especially important. Confirm that the specific example is actually listed within your budget.

8. 2025 Chevrolet Equinox — value alternative, not a reliability leader

The Equinox appears among iSeeCars’ broader small-SUV candidates, but the 2025 model’s 7.2/10 reliability rating is below the leading choices in this list. It may be worth comparing when local price, condition, or equipment is compelling, but the evidence does not support presenting it as equivalent to the highest-rated options. A comparable average used price is not stated in the cited 2026 figures.

9. 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan — space alternative with a lower listed score

The 2024 Tiguan appears in the broader small-SUV ranking with a 7.1/10 iSeeCars reliability rating. Treat it as a candidate to evaluate for space and price, not as a top reliability pick. The cited material does not state a comparable average used price for this model in the figures summarized here.

10. Honda Pilot — midsize option when you need more room

Honda Pilot models appear in iSeeCars’ broader midsize-SUV category, making the model a possible alternative for shoppers who need more passenger room than a compact SUV offers. The specific Pilot model year, reliability score, and average used price are not stated in the cited material summarized for this guide, so this entry is a lead to investigate—not a claim that a particular Pilot is under $30,000 or ranks alongside the scored models.

What the ratings and ownership data do—and do not—tell you

Reliability scores are not condition reports

iSeeCars’ ratings are useful for comparing models within its methodology, but they cannot reveal whether a particular car was serviced on time, repaired after a collision, or maintained by its previous owner. J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study looks at a different period: it surveyed 33,268 original owners of 2023 model-year vehicles after three years and assessed 184 specific problem areas across nine major categories. That is evidence about three-year dependability, not a lifetime reliability forecast for a used SUV.

Fuel economy depends on the tested vehicle and your use

Consumer Reports’ 37 mpg overall for its tested 2021–22 RAV4 Hybrid and 28 mpg overall for its tested 2022 CR-V 1.5-liter turbo are useful points of comparison, not promises for all trims, conditions, or driving patterns. Confirm the powertrain and model year on the vehicle you are considering, then compare its likely use with the test figure rather than assuming every version will match it.

Resale value is not the same as reliability or total cost

Edmunds’ 2026 report, as attributed in Associated Press coverage, says the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross retained 81.7% of its original value after three years and the 2023 RAV4 Hybrid retained 81.4%. Those historical residual percentages describe value retention, not breakdown rates or total ownership cost. They are not enough on their own to establish that either vehicle is a better buy than another SUV.

How to choose the right one for your budget

  1. Set an out-the-door limit. Decide how much you can spend after taxes, registration, dealer fees, and any financing costs. The listed iSeeCars averages are not out-the-door quotations, and a near-cap vehicle can exceed your limit once these costs are added.
  2. Choose the size before comparing rankings. Decide whether a subcompact such as the HR-V, a compact such as the CR-V or RAV4, or a midsize/three-row vehicle such as the Highlander better fits your passengers and cargo. Test the actual seating and cargo layout.
  3. Compare the exact model year and powertrain. Ratings and test results in this guide apply to specific years or configurations. Do not transfer a hybrid fuel-economy result to a non-hybrid, or assume a score for one year applies unchanged to another.
  4. Check each vehicle’s records and history. Review available service invoices, mileage, accident and title history, and open recalls using the vehicle identification number (VIN). A model ranking cannot answer these questions for a specific car.
  5. Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Have a qualified independent mechanic assess the vehicle before purchase. Use the inspection findings alongside its records and history rather than relying on the model name alone.
  6. Compare the final candidates on condition and fit. Consider the inspection, maintenance evidence, price, equipment, and space together. The available sources do not provide comparable total ownership-cost estimates for these ten models.
