You can find genuinely entertaining used coupes around a $20,000 shopping budget, but the best fit depends on whether you want nimble handling, muscle-car power, everyday comfort, or premium performance. Treat $20,000 as a starting point, not a guarantee: the 2025 buying guides below identify model-year examples, while a car’s condition, mileage, trim, location, and maintenance history determine whether its asking price makes sense.
What makes a used coupe a good buy?
A low asking price is only one part of affordability. Compare the individual car’s condition and service history with local listings, then consider whether its age, performance and likely ownership demands fit your budget. A newer mainstream coupe and an older premium performance car may have similar asking prices but very different ownership profiles; the cited guides do not establish comparable repair costs or reliability rankings across these choices.
The list below is a coupe-focused shortlist drawn from Autotrader’s August 2025 guide and Kelley Blue Book’s June 2025 under-$20,000 recommendations. Their examples are not fixed current prices, and not every model line is limited to fixed-roof coupes. Check local valuations and listings before deciding what a particular car is worth.
10 used coupes worth considering
1. Subaru BRZ
The BRZ is a strong pick if you want a compact, fixed-roof, rear-wheel-drive car that emphasizes engaging handling over straight-line power. Its small rear seats and additional cargo flexibility make it more useful than a two-seat roadster, though the back seat is limited. Toyota 86 and Scion FR-S models are close relatives to include in your search. Car and Driver’s 2026 coupe guide calls the BRZ “one of today’s most exciting affordable automobiles.” Car and Driver’s 2026 coupe guide also highlights the second-generation car’s added practicality compared with a Miata.

2. Nissan 370Z
The 370Z offers a more powerful, two-seat sports-coupe experience. Autotrader’s 2025 guide describes a 2014 example with a 332-hp V6 and available six-speed manual; Kelley Blue Book also recommends a 2014 model for its V6 power and rear-drive character. Those figures and features describe the cited examples, not every 370Z.
3. Ford Mustang
The Mustang’s broad range of years, engines and trims gives shoppers flexibility, but the versions are not interchangeable. Autotrader’s 2025 guide points to a 2019 EcoBoost as a budget fit; its separate coupe guide gives a 2016 V6 or older 2012 GT as examples. Kelley Blue Book’s 2018 suggestion is the EcoBoost Premium, rated at 310 hp in that guide. Choose the engine and age deliberately rather than assuming every Mustang near your budget offers the same performance or ownership costs.

The Camaro can deliver composed handling at a budget-friendly price, with significant differences between newer lower trims and older V8 cars. Autotrader’s 2025 guide describes a 2019 LT as a likely fit and says an older, higher-mileage SS may also fall within reach. Kelley Blue Book’s 2015 recommendation is a fifth-generation SS with a V8. Autotrader cites 335 hp for its 2018 V6 example; that specification belongs to that model-year and engine combination.
5. Dodge Challenger
The Challenger is the larger, more relaxed muscle-coupe choice. Autotrader’s examples include an SXT with a V6 as well as older R/T and SRT8 V8 versions. These are very different cars to run and drive, so compare the specific engine, condition, maintenance records and fuel needs rather than shopping by model name alone.

6. Hyundai Genesis Coupe
The rear-wheel-drive Genesis Coupe can offer substantial power for the money. Autotrader’s 2025 guide cites a 2016 3.8-liter V6 example with 348 hp. That is a trim-specific figure, not a rating for every Genesis Coupe, so verify the engine and equipment on any listing.
7. Audi TTS
The TTS combines compact performance with all-wheel drive, but a budget-priced example is an older premium car. Autotrader’s 2025 list describes a 2013 model with 265 hp and quattro AWD. Weigh its equipment and performance against the particular car’s age and maintenance history; the cited guide does not quantify repair costs.

8. BMW 4 Series
A used 4 Series is a premium alternative to mainstream coupes, and the model line includes different body styles and configurations. Autotrader’s 2025 guide includes a 2015 example. Confirm that a listing is the fixed-roof coupe you want, and assess its service history and condition rather than treating the model name or budget as a guarantee of low ownership costs.
9. BMW M3
An M3 can bring a more performance-focused experience, but a budget example is likely to be substantially older than many mainstream alternatives. Autotrader’s 2025 guide includes a 2008 M3 and notes that examples can be hard to find. Treat it as an older performance-car purchase: the asking price alone does not tell you whether its condition or maintenance history makes it a sensible fit.

10. Honda Accord Coupe
The Accord Coupe suits a shopper who wants a more comfort- and practicality-oriented daily driver rather than a small, rear-drive sports coupe. Autotrader’s guide highlights its comfort, reliability and available higher-spec features. It is the coupe on this list to consider when everyday usability matters more than an especially agile, sports-car feel.

If you are willing to consider a roadster rather than a conventional fixed-roof coupe, the Mazda Miata is a worthwhile alternative. Car and Driver’s 2025/26 guide gives a 155–181-hp range for the fourth-generation Miata across model years; it is a range, not one output for every car. The Miata is a two-seat roadster, although the RF version has a retractable hardtop, so it should not be counted as a conventional fixed-roof coupe.
Check the car before you commit
A used performance car’s condition matters at least as much as its model’s reputation. Kelley Blue Book advises comparing local examples and judging a car on a test drive; Car and Driver recommends an independent mechanic’s inspection and a vehicle-history check. Use this checklist before agreeing to buy:

- Compare the specific car with local listings. Check similar model years, trims, mileage and condition, and consult a valuation tool. The 2025 guide examples are not current local transaction prices.
- Review its history and records. Get a vehicle-history report and check mileage consistency and accident records. Ask for maintenance documentation, especially for an older premium or performance model.
- Inspect for condition issues. Have an independent mechanic inspect the car, including underneath and around the wheel wells for rust. A history report is useful, but it does not replace an inspection.
- Look closely at modifications. Ask what has been changed and how the work was installed. Modifications can be a sign of hard use, but they do not prove the car was abused.
- Test drive in legal conditions. Check driving position, comfort, acceleration, cornering and braking. In a manual, pay attention to clutch and gearbox behavior; Car and Driver specifically recommends checking for clutch slip.
