Used-car prices vary with mileage, condition, location, and trim. 1. BMW 2 Series (2015–2018), especially M235i or M240i
The six-cylinder M235i and M240i versions offer cited output of 320 to 335 hp, balanced handling, and more long-distance comfort than the smaller roadsters. Their rear seats are small. 4. Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 (2017–2020)

What the current-model references do—and do not—tell you
Two other published rankings help show how the answer changes with the ranking method. Car and Driver’s page accessed October 7, 2026, displays starting figures of $31,665 for the 2026 MX-5 Miata, $32,695 for the 2026 Toyota GR86, and $37,055 for the 2026 Subaru BRZ. Those are the page’s displayed figures, which may differ from manufacturer pricing and dealer transactions. Its editorial ranking favors these familiar affordable sports-car choices; it is not a guarantee of lowest ownership cost or best value for every buyer. iSeeCars’ 2026 used-car ranking names the 2020 Subaru BRZ first under $25,000, the 2023 Miata first under $30,000, the 2025 Miata first under $35,000, and the 2023 Ford Mustang coupe first under $40,000. These are the publisher’s category winners, not universal verdicts. iSeeCars says its rankings draw on more than 12 million new and used vehicles and combine reliability, five-year value retention adjusted using US Bureau of Labor Statistics inflation data, and safety inputs that include NHTSA and IIHS information. How to inspect a used enthusiast car before buying
On an older performance car, deferred maintenance or heavy modifications can turn a low asking price into a poor purchase. Edmunds cautions buyers about neglect and recommends a service record for the C6 Corvette. Use the following checks to reduce uncertainty without treating a quick scan as proof of condition.
- Review the records. Ask for service receipts and check that maintenance is consistent with the car’s age and mileage. Ask what modifications have been made and whether original parts are available.
- Arrange a qualified pre-purchase inspection. Have a technician familiar with the model examine mechanical condition, signs of damage, and modifications. A written assessment can help you decide whether to proceed or budget for repairs.
- Use an OBD-II scanner only as a preliminary check. A scanner can reveal stored diagnostic trouble codes, but a clean scan does not establish the car’s overall condition and does not replace an inspection.
- Compare the inspected car with your full budget. Include any immediate work identified during inspection alongside taxes, registration, insurance, and tires before deciding whether the price fits.

Which type is the best fit?
- Choose the Miata if two seats, modest power, and a handling-focused roadster are the point.
- Choose the BRZ or 86/GR86 if you want a rear-drive coupe and can accept rear seats with limited passenger usefulness.
- Choose the GTI if a usable hatchback is more important than rear-wheel drive.
- Consider the Mustang EcoBoost if stronger turbocharged power and torque suit your priorities; the cited 2025 configuration is automatic.
- Consider the used BMW or Corvette if you want more power and can evaluate the condition and maintenance history of an older car carefully.
- Consider the Hornet GT if performance and cargo utility matter more than a traditional sports-car body style.
