There is no evidence-backed universal winner among bottled, canned, and boxed waters: the right choice depends on whether you want still or sparkling water, what type of water you prefer, local availability and price, and how the package fits your local recycling or reuse system. This shortlist is for shoppers comparing brands, not a lab-tested ranking. It draws on brand and corporate information available for internationally marketed products; availability and package options vary by country.

How to choose among water brands

Before comparing labels, decide what matters most to you:

  • Water category and source: Natural mineral water, spring water, and purified water are different categories. Check the label for the product sold in your market rather than assuming every water under a brand name has the same source or category.
  • Still or sparkling: Several brands offer sparkling water, while others are known for still water. A brand may sell both, so check the specific product.
  • Package and size: Bottles, cans, and cartons differ in format and available sizes. Consider whether you want a single serving, a multipack, or a package suited to carrying or storing.
  • Price and availability: These depend on location, retailer, and package size. Compare the cost per volume on the shelf; this shortlist does not establish current prices or value rankings.
  • Local end-of-life options: A package’s material or design does not guarantee that your local collection system accepts or processes it. Check local recycling guidance, and consider refillable or reusable options where available.

10 brands to consider

The brands below are grouped by the formats and product types established in the available company information. They are not ranked by taste, value, or environmental performance.

Bottled mineral and sparkling water

  1. S.Pellegrino: A sparkling mineral-water option. Nestlé describes the water’s origins at the foot of the Italian Alps and says the brand dates to 1899. Nestlé’s water portfolio.
  2. Acqua Panna: A natural mineral-water brand associated with Tuscany and included in Nestlé’s water portfolio. Nestlé’s water portfolio.
  3. Perrier: A sparkling-water option. Nestlé describes Perrier as having bubbles and balanced mineral content; that is the company’s characterization, not a comparative tasting result. Nestlé’s water portfolio.
  4. Nestlé Pure Life: An everyday bottled-water brand in Nestlé’s portfolio. Nestlé says the brand serves more than 20 countries; product details and availability can vary by market. Nestlé’s water portfolio.
  5. evian: Danone describes evian as natural mineral water whose composition develops during a 15-year journey through French Alpine rocks. This is the company’s account of the water’s journey. Danone also lists evian sparkling in bottles and cans, including 1 L bottles and cans. Danone’s evian brand page.
  6. Volvic: A natural mineral-water brand that Danone says is sourced in France’s Auvergne volcanic region. Danone’s Volvic brand page.

Carton-packed water

  1. Boxed Water Is Better: A carton-water option with products listed in several sizes, including 500 ml cartons, and variety packs in the brand’s official store. Boxed Water Is Better’s product store. The company says its carton is 92% renewable plant-based material, 5% aluminum, and 3% BPA-free plastic; it is composite packaging, not paper alone. Boxed Water Is Better’s FAQ, updated February 2025.
  2. Flow: A carton-water name that may be relevant to shoppers comparing formats, but current product details and market availability are not established here. Check the package and retailer listing before treating it as a direct alternative.

Canned and aluminum-packaged water

  1. evian sparkling: Danone lists this sparkling-water line in cans as well as bottles, including 1 L bottles and cans. Check the specific size and product availability in your market. Danone’s evian brand page.
  2. Liquid Death: A canned-water candidate for shoppers considering this format, but the exact water product and current market availability are not established here. Verify the product label and local retailer listing before buying.

Another aluminum-packaged option

Open Water is another name shoppers may encounter for aluminum-packaged water. Its current format and availability are not established here, so confirm the product details in your market. It is a useful reminder that package format alone does not establish water type or local recyclability.

What the packaging claims do—and do not—tell you

Boxed Water Is Better’s material breakdown describes its carton as 92% renewable plant-based material, 5% aluminum, and 3% BPA-free plastic. Those components make the package composite rather than paper-only. The company also compares its cartons favorably with premium plastic bottles and canned water, but that is the brand’s own environmental claim, not an independent comparison established here. Boxed Water Is Better’s FAQ; the company’s sustainability page.

Packaging figures from a company portfolio should not be mistaken for a guarantee about an individual container in your town. Danone reports that in 2026 its packaging is 96% recyclable and that more than 45% of its marketed water volume is sold in reusable jugs, mainly in Asia and Latin America. These are company-reported, portfolio-wide figures with the stated geographic qualification; they do not show that every Danone bottle is accepted by every local recycling program. Danone’s packaging page.

Rank #2

For any format, check local recycling guidance for the specific container. Recyclability as a material or design property is not the same as collection and processing being available locally. No independent cross-format life-cycle comparison is established here, so the evidence does not support declaring bottles, cans, or cartons the most sustainable choice in every market.

Which option fits your shopping priorities?

  • You want sparkling mineral water: Compare S.Pellegrino, Perrier, and evian sparkling, checking whether your preferred product is sold in a bottle or can locally.
  • You want still mineral water: Consider Acqua Panna, evian, or Volvic, then check the product label for its water category and source.
  • You want an everyday bottled-water brand: Nestlé Pure Life is one option in Nestlé’s international portfolio; confirm local availability and compare unit prices.
  • You want a carton: Boxed Water Is Better has documented 500 ml cartons and variety packs in its official store. Check local package collection guidance rather than relying only on the material breakdown or the company’s environmental comparisons.
  • You want canned water: evian sparkling has company-documented can availability. For other can-focused brands, verify the precise water product, size, and availability in your market.
