Forex trading can give you access to a huge global market, the ability to trade rising or falling currencies, and trading hours that fit around a job or other commitments. It can also magnify small market moves into large losses. In retail over-the-counter (OTC) forex, you may be trading directly against a dealer rather than on a centralized exchange, and the quoted spread, financing charges, execution quality, and account protections all matter.
This guide separates the potential advantages from the risks and distinguishes OTC spot forex from exchange-traded currency futures and options. Those products are not interchangeable, and the rules differ by jurisdiction.
What is forex trading?
Forex, short for foreign exchange, involves taking a position on the exchange rate between two currencies. A quote such as EUR/USD 1.0850 means that one euro is priced at 1.0850 U.S. dollars.
- Buying EUR/USD means taking a view that the euro will rise relative to the dollar.
- Selling EUR/USD means taking a view that the euro will fall relative to the dollar.
Every currency-pair quote has a bid, the price at which you can sell, and an ask, the price at which you can buy. The difference between them is the bid-ask spread, an immediate trading cost.

The institutional foreign-exchange market is primarily over the counter rather than one centralized exchange. The Bank for International Settlements reported average global OTC forex turnover of approximately $9.6 trillion per day in April 2025, with the U.S. dollar on one side of 89% of reported trades. That scale is important, but it does not guarantee that a retail trader will receive a particular price or enjoy narrow spreads.
Retail traders generally reach the market through one of two structures:
- OTC spot forex: You typically trade through a dealer that provides the platform and quotes. The dealer may be your counterparty.
- Exchange-traded currency futures or options: These use standardized contracts, an exchange order book, and centralized clearing.
Before comparing brokers, identify which product you are actually considering. A warning about OTC forex may not apply in exactly the same way to a currency-futures account, and a futures benefit does not automatically transfer to spot forex.
Potential advantages of forex trading
1. It is a large, widely used market
Foreign exchange is used by banks, corporations, governments, investment firms, and individuals. Businesses use it to convert money and hedge currency exposure; investors and traders may use it to speculate on exchange-rate changes.
The market’s size can mean substantial activity in major pairs such as EUR/USD, USD/JPY, and GBP/USD. There are often many buyers and sellers during major trading sessions. However, aggregate global volume should not be confused with a guarantee of tight spreads or perfect execution in your account. Liquidity changes by currency pair, trading session, dealer, and market conditions.
2. Trading is generally available around the clock on weekdays
Conventional retail forex is usually available nearly 24 hours a day from Sunday evening through Friday, with a weekend closure and, depending on the provider, a daily maintenance break. That schedule can suit someone who cannot trade during standard U.S. stock-market hours.
For example, OANDA lists U.S. forex hours from Sunday at 5:05 p.m. through Friday at 4:59 p.m. New York time. CME’s listed FX Spot+ schedule includes a daily 60-minute break. Exact hours change by broker, exchange, holiday calendar, and daylight-saving rules, so check the provider’s schedule rather than assuming that a pair is continuously tradable.
“Forex is open 24/7” is not generally correct for traditional fiat-currency forex. The usual description is 24/5. Some cryptocurrency derivatives trade continuously, but that is a different market.
3. You can take bullish or bearish positions
Forex is structured around relative performance. You are always comparing one currency with another, so there is no requirement that you own a currency first before taking a bearish position in a pair.

That flexibility can be useful for:
- Speculating on a currency’s expected rise or fall.
- Hedging a future payment or receipt in another currency.
- Expressing a view about interest rates, inflation, economic growth, or central-bank policy.
A U.S. business expecting to pay a supplier in euros, for example, may have a legitimate reason to manage EUR/USD exposure. That is different from opening a leveraged trade simply because a social-media signal predicts a move.
4. Margin can reduce the cash required to open a position
Retail forex commonly uses margin. You deposit money that supports a larger currency position, rather than paying the full notional value upfront.
In the United States, retail OTC forex rules generally require at least:

| Pair category | Minimum margin | Maximum leverage |
|---|---|---|
| Major currency pairs | 2% | 50:1 |
| Other currency pairs | 5% | 20:1 |
This is a capital-efficiency feature, not a reduction in risk. At 50:1 leverage, a 1% unfavorable move in the underlying position is approximately equal to 50% of the required margin before spreads, financing, and other costs. A move of roughly 2% against the position could consume the margin supporting it, subject to the broker’s liquidation rules.
5. There are many currency pairs
Traders can choose among major pairs, minor pairs, and pairs involving emerging-market currencies. The broader selection can help a trader find a market connected to a particular economic theme or hedge a specific currency exposure.
That choice comes with a trade-off. Less-traded or emerging-market pairs may have wider spreads, greater volatility, lower liquidity, and more difficult execution than the most active major pairs. A pair that looks attractive because of a large potential move may also be expensive to enter and exit.
6. Exchange-traded alternatives offer a different structure
Someone interested in currency exposure but uncomfortable with dealer-quoted OTC trading can investigate exchange-traded currency futures or options. These products typically have standardized contract terms, centralized clearing, published expiration dates, and an exchange marketplace.

Disadvantages and risks of forex trading
1. Most retail accounts in the cited U.S. disclosure period were not profitable
The CFTC reported that, based on registered OTC forex dealers’ disclosures for the second quarter of 2021 through the first quarter of 2022, approximately two-thirds of customers lost money and about one-third made a profit after credits, financing charges, fees, and other expenses.

- Highlighting on key points...
That statistic needs careful wording. It describes non-discretionary customer accounts at registered U.S. OTC dealers during a specific four-quarter period. It is not a permanent worldwide loss rate, does not cover every forex product, and does not necessarily represent the results of every individual trader.
U.S. retail forex dealers are required to publish quarterly percentages of profitable and non-profitable non-discretionary customer accounts. Treat that disclosure as relevant evidence about the difficulty of the product, not as a prediction of your personal result.

2. Leverage can deplete an account quickly
Leverage increases the size of the position relative to your deposit. The same percentage move that produces a modest gain on an unleveraged investment can produce a severe loss on a leveraged forex position.
Large moves can occur after:
- Central-bank interest-rate decisions.
- Inflation, employment, or GDP reports.
- Elections and geopolitical events.
- Unexpected government announcements.
- Thin-liquidity periods or the market’s weekend reopening.
A stop-loss order is a risk-management instruction, not a guaranteed maximum loss. In a fast market, the order may execute at a price materially worse than the selected stop level. Depending on the account agreement and legal protections, losses may also exceed the initial deposit.
3. OTC trading creates dealer and counterparty risk
In ordinary retail OTC forex, you generally are not submitting an order to one centralized forex exchange. The dealer may quote the price, operate the platform, and act as the counterparty to your trade.
That structure can expose you to:
- Quotes that differ from those shown by another provider.
- Slippage, requotes, or post-execution adjustments.
- Platform outages that prevent you from entering, modifying, or closing a position.
- The dealer’s ability and willingness to meet its obligations.
- No central clearinghouse for the ordinary OTC transaction.
Before depositing money with a U.S. provider, use the CFTC and NFA tools to verify registration and review disciplinary history. Registration does not make trading profitable, but dealing with an unregistered firm removes important safeguards.

Comparisons often become misleading because “forex” is treated as one product. The structure affects pricing, clearing, contract size, expiration, margin, and investor protections.
| Feature | Retail OTC spot forex | Exchange-traded currency futures |
|---|---|---|
| Marketplace | Dealer or OTC network | Regulated exchange |
| Counterparty | Often the dealer | Central clearing structure |
| Contract terms | Dealer-specific | Standardized |
| Expiration | Often no fixed expiration, subject to rollover terms | Fixed contract expiration |
| Pricing | Dealer quotes and spread | Exchange order book and market data |
| Main risks | Leverage, dealer risk, execution, spread, financing, and fraud | Leverage, liquidation, expiration, basis, liquidity, and futures margin risk |
An exchange structure can reduce certain counterparty concerns, but it does not remove market risk or guarantee an easy exit.
5. The true cost can be harder to compare than the headline commission
A forex trade may involve several charges:
- Bid-ask spread.
- Per-trade commission.
- Spread markup.
- Overnight financing or rollover charges.
- Currency-conversion costs.
- Inactivity, platform, or data fees.
- Slippage.
“Commission-free” does not mean cost-free. A dealer may receive compensation through a wider spread, and a trade held overnight may incur financing charges. For a frequent trader, those costs can consume a strategy’s small expected edge even when the market direction is correctly predicted.

Before opening an account, check the broker’s spread schedule, commission table, rollover methodology, minimum trade size, margin rules, and conditions during major announcements. Test the complete cost on a hypothetical position rather than comparing only the word “commission.”

A spread displayed during a quiet, liquid session is not necessarily the spread you will receive during a major news release. Dealers may widen quotes when liquidity falls or volatility rises. That can make it more expensive to open or close a position and can trigger a stop at an unexpectedly poor price.
Execution risk also includes outages, delayed data, rejected orders, false quotes, and platform behavior that the trader does not understand. A trading plan that works only when every order fills at the displayed price is not a realistic plan.
7. Currency prices respond to competing forces
Exchange rates can react to interest-rate expectations, inflation, economic growth, fiscal policy, government debt, trade flows, commodity prices, political events, capital flows, and market positioning. Several of those forces may point in opposite directions.
You can be right about a country’s long-term economic outlook and still lose money because the position was opened too early, the move was already priced in, leverage was excessive, or financing and spread costs outweighed the favorable price change.

Indicators, bots, signal services, and algorithmic systems can make a strategy appear more precise than it is. Automated trading can malfunction, use incorrect data, apply the wrong parameters, or execute more rapidly than you can monitor.
Backtests are especially unreliable when they omit real-world frictions. A credible test should account for:
- Bid-ask spreads.
- Commissions and financing.
- Slippage and rejected orders.
- Liquidity and position-size limits.
- Data quality and timing.
- Changes in market conditions.
Past simulated performance is not evidence that a live leveraged account will be profitable.
9. Fraudulent and offshore forex offers are a serious danger
Be cautious of anyone promising guaranteed returns, unusually high short-term profits, or a strategy that “cannot lose.” Other warning signs include pressure to move conversations to private messaging apps, cryptocurrency-only deposits, no verifiable physical headquarters, leverage above local limits, a referral to an unregistered dealer, and a trading platform that cannot be independently verified.
Best Value
Do not send more money merely to unlock a withdrawal or pay a supposed tax demanded by the platform. Verify the firm independently through the relevant regulator, not through a registration link supplied by a salesperson.
10. Account protection may differ from what stock investors expect
In the United States, retail OTC forex funds are not automatically protected in the same way as securities held in a securities brokerage account. FINRA states that funds deposited into a broker-dealer account for currency investment, and proceeds from currency positions, are not protected by SIPC in the same manner as securities.
Protection depends on the product, intermediary, account structure, and applicable law. Never assume that a forex account has the same protections as a conventional stock brokerage account. Read the customer agreement and determine what happens if the firm fails, disputes a trade, or restricts withdrawals.

- Name the product. Confirm whether it is OTC spot forex, a currency future, an exchange-traded option, a CFD, or another derivative.
- Check the provider. Verify authorization and disciplinary history with the regulator applicable to your country. U.S. customers can check CFTC and NFA records.
- Calculate the position size. Work out the dollar loss from a realistic adverse move, not just the margin required to open the trade.
- List every cost. Include spread, commission, rollover, conversion, platform fees, and estimated slippage.
- Read the liquidation rules. Find out when positions can be closed for insufficient margin and whether losses can exceed the deposit.
- Plan for unavailable markets. Know the weekend schedule, maintenance breaks, news events, and what happens if the platform goes offline.
- Do not borrow money to speculate. A trade should not threaten rent, emergency savings, debt payments, or other essential goals.
FAQ
Is forex trading a good way to make money?
It is possible to make money, but it is not a dependable income source. Forex uses leverage, costs can be significant, and the CFTC reported that approximately two-thirds of customer accounts at registered U.S. OTC dealers lost money during the cited period from Q2 2021 through Q1 2022. That historical disclosure is not a guarantee of your result, but it illustrates the difficulty.
Is forex trading safer than stock investing?
Not generally. Retail forex commonly uses leverage and may involve dealer counterparty risk, variable spreads, financing charges, and different account protections. Stock investing also carries risk, but a leveraged OTC forex position should not be treated as equivalent to buying and holding an unleveraged diversified stock fund.
Can I lose more than I deposit in forex?
Depending on the product, customer agreement, jurisdiction, and account protections, losses may exceed the initial deposit. Review the broker’s negative-balance policy, margin rules, and liquidation terms before trading.
Is forex open 24 hours a day, seven days a week?
Traditional retail forex is generally available nearly 24 hours a day, five days a week, usually from Sunday evening through Friday, with daily breaks and a weekend closure. Exact hours vary by provider. The 24/7 description does not ordinarily apply to fiat-currency forex.
What is the difference between OTC forex and currency futures?
In OTC forex, you typically trade through a dealer that quotes prices and may be your counterparty. Currency futures trade on an exchange with standardized contracts and centralized clearing, but they have expiration dates and their own margin and liquidation risks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDoes commission-free forex mean there are no fees?
No. The dealer may build compensation into the bid-ask spread and may charge rollover or financing, currency-conversion, inactivity, platform, or other fees. Compare the full cost of a representative trade.
Do stop-loss orders guarantee that I will lose no more than the stop amount?
No. A stop order generally becomes executable when triggered, but rapid markets, gaps, and thin liquidity can produce an execution price worse than the stop level. A guaranteed-stop product, where available, has separate terms and costs.
The Bottom Line
Forex trading’s genuine advantages are broad currency access, flexible weekday hours, the ability to trade in either direction, and margin that can make a smaller deposit control a larger position. Its risks are equally real: leverage can rapidly exhaust an account, OTC traders may face dealer and platform risk, trading costs can be difficult to see, execution can worsen during volatility, and fraud is common among unregistered providers.
Forex is not automatically unsuitable for every purpose, but it is not an easy or reliable shortcut to income. The sensible starting point is to identify the exact product, verify the intermediary, understand the complete cost, and size any exposure so a bad move cannot damage essential finances.
