At December 31, 2024, American Airlines reported 977 mainline aircraft and 585 American Eagle regional aircraft. Its broader period-end figure was 1,562 aircraft, but that total includes aircraft operated by regional partners and should not be read as 1,562 planes owned by American. The available figures also do not establish that American had the world’s largest fleet at year-end.
How many planes did American Airlines have in 2024?
American Airlines Group’s 2024 Form 10-K reports the following fleet figures at December 31, 2024:
| Fleet measure | Aircraft | What it counts |
|---|---|---|
| Mainline fleet | 977 | American’s mainline aircraft at year-end. |
| American Eagle regional fleet | 585 | Regional aircraft operated by wholly owned subsidiaries and third-party regional carriers. |
| Broader aircraft-at-period-end figure | 1,562 | American-owned and leased aircraft, plus aircraft operated by third-party regional carriers under capacity purchase agreements. |
The 1,562 figure is a broader accounting measure, not an ownership count. The filing’s footnotes also exclude seven regional aircraft in temporary storage from the relevant operating total. That difference is one reason fleet figures from separate sources should not be combined without checking what each counts.
Was American Airlines the world’s largest airline fleet?
The year-end count does not by itself support an unqualified claim that American had the world’s largest fleet. In a March 4, 2024 company release, CEO Robert Isom described American’s fleet as “the largest and youngest among U.S. network carriers.” That statement is limited to a particular U.S. peer group and predates the year-end count; it is not a worldwide ranking.

Other comparisons use different measures or methods. United’s 2024 filing discusses leadership by available seat miles, a measure of capacity rather than number of aircraft. OAG’s 2025 analysis of 2024 rankings reports a tie between Delta and American at 1,006 aircraft under its methodology. That figure does not align directly with American’s December 31 Form 10-K count. Because dates, fleet boundaries, and counting methods differ, these sources do not establish a comparable global year-end aircraft-count ranking.
What changed in American’s fleet during 2024?
Aircraft delivered
American accepted 12 mainline aircraft during 2024: seven Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft and five Airbus A321neo aircraft, according to its 2024 Form 10-K. These deliveries are already reflected in the year-end fleet reporting; they are not additional to the reported count.

Orders announced for future aircraft
In March 2024, American announced orders for 85 Airbus A321neo aircraft, 85 Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft, and 90 Embraer E175 aircraft, alongside additional options and purchase rights. These were announced future aircraft, not planes in the December 31, 2024 fleet count. The announcement is in the company’s March 2024 newsroom release.

American said A319 and A320 cabin retrofits were to begin in 2025 and described planned interior changes in its March 2024 announcement. The company also forecast that premium seating would grow by more than 20% by 2026. That percentage was a forward-looking company projection, not a verified result in the year-end 2024 fleet figures.

Cabin plans and aircraft orders help explain the airline’s modernization strategy, but they answer a different question from fleet size: announced changes do not alter the number of aircraft reported as operating at a specific date.
