FTC complaints about Ashley Madison describe people being moved off the dating site, pressured for intimate images or recordings, and threatened with disclosure unless they paid. Gizmodo reported that the FTC located 282 complaints over five years and released 200 after a records request. Those figures describe complaints—not a rate among Ashley Madison users, confirmed crimes, or a measure of the service’s current safety.

What the Ashley Madison complaints say

In its May 1, 2024 report, Gizmodo described FTC complaints obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request. The FTC located 282 complaints over five years and released 200. Gizmodo said most of the released complaints involved alleged extortionists seeking intimate photos or video and then demanding money.

People who submitted complaints described a recurring sequence: someone appeared to make contact on Ashley Madison, moved the conversation to text, email, Skype, Signal, Snapchat, Google Hangouts, or another service, and asked for or elicited intimate material. The alleged extortionist then threatened to send images, recordings, screenshots, or profile information to family, friends, employers, or social accounts unless the person paid.

Some accounts included threats involving a supposed minor or accusations of inappropriate conduct as additional pressure. These are allegations reproduced in a news report; Gizmodo said it could not independently verify each claim. The complaints do not establish who the alleged perpetrators were.

What the numbers do—and do not—show

The counts indicate that multiple people made allegations over the period covered by the records request. They do not show how common sextortion is among Ashley Madison users, how many incidents were confirmed, or what protections the service has today. The report is a historical account of complaints, not a current safety assessment.

Gizmodo also reported historical context about Ashley Madison’s 2015 data breach: roughly 10 gigabytes of data and 37 million users. Those figures concern the earlier breach, not the later complaint set, and do not establish that the breach data was used in the alleged extortion attempts.

Why paying is not a reliable way to stop a threat

Gizmodo reported that initial demands in the complaints were often around $1,000 or $2,000, but the reproduced accounts included different amounts and payment methods. These examples are not a typical-loss estimate. Some complainants said the demands continued after they tried to pay: one described attempted payments through several services followed by more contact, while another said the extortionist asked for additional money after an initial payment.

The FBI warns that complying does not guarantee sensitive material will remain private. Its guidance is not specific to Ashley Madison: the FBI’s 2023 alert says not to give unknown or unfamiliar individuals money or other items of value.

What to do if someone is threatening to send your nudes

If someone says they recorded you on a video call or threatens to send intimate photos to your family, do not send more images, money, or financial access. The FTC’s sextortion guidance recommends ending contact, blocking the person, reporting the threat to law enforcement, and talking with someone you trust. Blocking and reporting are sensible steps, but they cannot guarantee the person will not publish material.

  1. Stop engaging. Do not negotiate, pay, send additional content, or give access to bank accounts, payment apps, or other financial services. The FBI’s 2021 alert advises victims to stop all interaction and not be afraid to contact law enforcement.
  2. Preserve incident details. Before blocking, save relevant information where safe to do so: usernames, email addresses, phone numbers, websites, platform names, messages, payment requests, and dates. The FBI advises retaining information about the accounts and services involved.
  3. Report the threat. Contact local law enforcement and file a report with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at IC3.gov. The FTC also recommends reporting sextortion to criminal law enforcement. Do not assume that making a report will itself prevent disclosure.
  4. Get support. Tell a trusted person what is happening. Sextortion relies on isolation and fear; you do not have to handle the threat alone.

If an intimate image has already been posted

Ask the platform hosting the material to remove it. The FTC says covered platforms must provide a way to request removal and, after a request, remove the image and known identical copies within 48 hours. This process concerns posted material; it is not a promise that an extortionist will not share an image elsewhere.

If the person depicted is a minor, the FTC says the matter may also be reported to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s CyberTipline. See the FTC’s guidance on sextortion and image-based abuse for reporting and removal information.
