Who owns Quordle now?
Merriam-Webster acquired Quordle, the four-at-once word puzzle, in a deal reported on January 20, 2023. The contemporary report did not disclose the financial terms. TechCrunch reported the acquisition and the undisclosed terms.
Quordle creator Freddie Meyer welcomed the move, writing, “I’m delighted to announce that Quordle was acquired by Merriam-Webster! I can’t think of a better home for this game. Lots of new features and fun to come, so stay tuned!” TechCrunch reproduced the statement from the game’s tutorial/help section in its January 2023 coverage.
Merriam-Webster President Greg Barlow described the acquisition as an addition to the company’s games and quizzes lineup. His statement, also reproduced by TechCrunch in January 2023, called Quordle “a favorite of Merriam-Webster editors” and said the company looked forward to playing with its fans. Neither statement gave a purchase price.
What changed for players?
The official Merriam-Webster Games & Quizzes index, accessed October 5, 2026, lists Quordle among its daily games and describes it as “Can you solve 4 words at once?” That confirms the game remains listed on Merriam-Webster’s site. The index does not establish every current gameplay rule, and the dedicated game page’s text requires JavaScript, so a current play session is not independently confirmed here.
The January 2023 change was chiefly a change in ownership and home: TechCrunch reported that the game had moved to Merriam-Webster’s site. Any expectations about future features should be treated as historical unless supported by a newer announcement.

How Quordle differs from Wordle
Quordle makes one guess do work across four boards at once. That shared constraint is what makes it more demanding than Wordle’s single-word format; the games should not be assumed to have identical rules beyond colored-letter feedback.

What Merriam-Webster said about paywalls and changes
In a TechRadar interview published January 20, 2023, Barlow said there were no plans at that time to put Quordle behind a paywall and no planned changes to the core daily game. He also mentioned possible new features and game types. Those comments describe Merriam-Webster’s stated plans in 2023; they are not current confirmation of Quordle’s payment policy or product roadmap. The current games index confirms a listing, not those policies.
Barlow also rejected the idea that Quordle was simply copying Wordle, arguing that solving four words created different tactics. That was his view in the 2023 interview, not a legal determination.

How popular was Quordle at the time of the deal?
TechRadar reported in January 2023 that Barlow cited 29.7 million users and 410 million plays over the preceding six months. Those are historical figures reported by TechRadar, not current audience or usage statistics.
