The pause is over; it was not a continuing blanket ban. Later customs-duty changes are separate from that short-lived postal-service notice.
Is USPS still stopping packages from China or Hong Kong?
No. USPS’s February 5, 2025 update said it would continue accepting international inbound mail and packages from China and Hong Kong Posts. The preceding suspension, announced February 4, applied to inbound parcels and lasted less than 24 hours, according to The Washington Post’s contemporaneous account.
That historical notice does not establish whether a particular parcel is moving normally today. Destination and service availability can change, and an individual shipment can face its own delay. Check USPS service alerts for current destination information and the shipment’s tracking record—or contact the seller—for parcel-specific status.
What happened in February 2025?
- February 4: USPS announced a temporary suspension of inbound parcel acceptance from China and Hong Kong Posts, effective that day.
- February 5: USPS said it would continue accepting international inbound mail and packages from both Posts.
The scope matters: the initial notice concerned parcels, while the updated message said inbound mail and packages would continue to be accepted. It is inaccurate to describe the episode as a lasting ban on every kind of mail from China and Hong Kong.

Why did USPS announce the pause?
USPS said it and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) were working on a way to collect new China tariffs efficiently while minimizing delivery disruption. A USPS spokesperson told The Washington Post on February 5, 2025: “The USPS and Customs and Border Protection are working closely together to implement an efficient collection mechanism for the new China tariffs to ensure the least disruption to package delivery.” USPS did not publicly detail the collection process in that notice.
How the later customs changes differ from the USPS pause
The brief February 2025 acceptance pause was a postal-service notice. Later changes described in a USPS Federal Register notice concern customs treatment and entry processing; they are not evidence that USPS reinstated that pause.

- August 29, 2025: Duty-free de minimis treatment was suspended globally, according to the USPS notice.
- July 24, 2026: CBP’s new informal-entry process took effect for eligible mail imports valued at $2,500 or less. The notice also describes suspension of the administrative exemption for merchandise valued at $800 or less entering through the international postal network. Those thresholds refer to separate customs provisions; they do not describe a USPS package-acceptance ban.
These dates and customs details are from the USPS Federal Register notice. Customs requirements may affect how imported merchandise is processed or charged, but they should not be confused with whether USPS is accepting inbound mail from a particular origin.

How to check a shipment or destination today
- Check destination service status: Review the USPS service alerts page for current notices.
- Check the individual parcel: Use the tracking number supplied by the seller or USPS. Tracking addresses the parcel’s recorded status; service alerts address broader destination or service conditions.
- Confirm the service offered: USPS’s International Mail Manual, dated September 7, 2026 in the reviewed edition, lists service information for China and Hong Kong, including Priority Mail Express International with money-back guarantee service for both destinations. Availability can change, so check current USPS information when arranging a shipment.
- Ask the seller about a stalled parcel: The seller can confirm the carrier, dispatch date, and any tracking details not yet reflected in USPS records.
