Remitly’s path to becoming an international money-transfer company began with a different idea: a search engine for finding remittance services. After the founders concluded that concept had no viable business model, they shifted to building the transfer service itself—a more demanding route that required operating as a regulated money transmitter. Co-founder Matt Oppenheimer’s advice to “fall in love with a problem, not the solution” reflects that change. Remitly’s September 2021 IPO marked a milestone in the journey, not its endpoint.
What was Remitly’s original idea?
Matt Oppenheimer encountered the difficulty of sending money internationally while working in Kenya. He saw how much families depended on cross-border support and how cumbersome it could be to send funds. Remitly’s initial concept was a search engine that would help people find remittance services, rather than a company that moved the money itself. GeekWire’s 2021 account describes the company’s roots in the needs of immigrants supporting relatives abroad.
Why did Remitly pivot?
Market research suggested the search-engine concept did not have a viable business model. The founders therefore moved toward providing international money transfers directly. Oppenheimer later described the underlying problem plainly: “The problem was sending money internationally. Everybody knows it’s broken. It’s expensive.” That recollection appears in a Podscan.fm transcript excerpt.
The pivot changed the work as well as the product. A search tool could direct customers to existing providers; a transfer service had to take on the responsibilities of a regulated money transmitter. The founders chose the harder operating challenge because it addressed the friction directly rather than helping customers navigate around it.
What does “fall in love with a problem” mean for founders?
Oppenheimer recalled receiving this advice at Techstars: “Fall in love with a problem that you want to solve, not the solution.” In Remitly’s case, that meant staying focused on the difficulty of sending money across borders while being willing to replace the original product idea.
The principle is not a reason to cling to a business idea regardless of evidence. It separates the customer need from the first proposed fix:

- Keep the problem specific: Remitly focused on the cost and difficulty of international money transfers, not on a vague ambition to improve finance.
- Test the proposed solution: The search-engine concept was reconsidered after market research indicated that its business model was not viable.
- Be prepared to change the product: The founders shifted from helping customers find a provider to building a service that made transfers.
- Account for the new obligations: The direct-transfer approach brought the complexity of operating as a regulated money transmitter.
That distinction matters in personal finance because a service that handles money has responsibilities and operational demands beyond those of an information or search tool. The company’s origin story illustrates a product decision, not a guarantee that any particular financial service will be cheaper, safer, or better for every customer.

Oppenheimer called the IPO “a step along a much longer journey around transforming lives of immigrants and their families by providing them the most trusted financial services on the planet.” That was his stated ambition in 2021, rather than an independent assessment of Remitly’s performance or services. The framing puts the listing in context: the public offering was a financing and company milestone within a broader effort to address the original customer problem.
