The FAA announced a new review of Boeing’s safety processes in October 2024, saying it expected the work to take about three months. The reported review examined how Boeing assessed risk, allocated resources and followed regulatory requirements. It was part of the agency’s ongoing oversight of Boeing’s safety culture, not a review announced in 2026 or a response to one specific event.
What did the FAA say it would review?
Reuters reported on October 18, 2024, that the FAA had opened an oversight review focused on Boeing’s operational safety processes. The reported scope included the quality of risk assessments, how resources were allocated and whether Boeing adhered to regulatory requirements. The agency expected the review to take about three months; that was the expected duration at the time of the announcement, not confirmation that it finished on schedule. Reuters’ report described it as part of the FAA’s oversight of Boeing’s safety culture rather than a response to one particular event.
As Reuters reported the FAA’s explanation, the purpose was “to ensure they meet FAA requirements and result in timely, accurate safety-related information for FAA use.” The focus was therefore not only on whether procedures existed, but also on whether Boeing’s processes generated information the regulator could use in a timely and accurate way.
How did the review fit into the FAA’s wider Boeing oversight?
The three-month review was one part of a broader set of oversight efforts. Other work addressed implementation of corrective actions and recommendations, rather than just examining operational safety processes.

Monitoring the response to an FAA audit
In May 2024, the FAA said Boeing had provided a roadmap addressing findings from the agency’s special audit and recommendations from an expert panel. The FAA said its subject-matter experts would continually review Boeing’s progress and whether the company’s changes addressed those findings and recommendations. The FAA’s May 2024 statement describes that continuing implementation monitoring.
Following up on the expert panel’s recommendations
The FAA’s certification-reform overview says the agency appointed 24 experts in January 2023 to review Boeing’s safety management processes and their effects on safety culture. The panel submitted recommendations in September 2024. The FAA says it agreed with all 53: 44 directed to Boeing, seven to the FAA and two jointly to both.

Reviewing Boeing’s safety and quality plan
FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker said Boeing submitted its plan to the agency on May 30, 2024, starting the next phase of implementation oversight. In a U.S. Department of Transportation statement, Whitaker called it “the beginning of the next chapter of ensuring implementation and a renewed focus on safety at Boeing.” The department’s statement sets out the agency’s announcement about the plan.

The available accounts establish the announcement, its reported scope and its expected duration, but do not establish the final disposition of this specific three-month review. They do not show that it concluded on schedule, cleared Boeing or produced particular findings. Reuters’ October 18, 2024 report remains the source for the announcement and expected timeline; the FAA’s broader oversight pages describe related efforts, not a final result for this particular review.
