Judith R. “Judy” Faulkner built Epic Systems from a small software company founded in 1979 into a major provider of electronic health records (EHRs) for U.S. hospitals. Federal data show Epic’s share of non-federal acute-care hospitals grew from about 8% in 2010 to nearly half by 2024. That adoption gives Epic substantial influence over the infrastructure used to record and exchange health information; it does not, by itself, prove that Epic improved care outcomes.
Who is Judith R. Faulkner?
Judith R. “Judy” Faulkner is the founder and CEO of Epic Systems, a privately held healthcare software company based in Wisconsin. Her path into the field began with computer science: UTHealth Houston reports that she began a doctorate in computer science at the University of Wisconsin in 1965 and connects her early work to electronic medical records.
Epic says it was founded in 1979 in a basement, with three half-time employees. The company describes its original mission as developing software to help people get well, stay well, and help future generations be healthier. Faulkner’s work on patient data tracking grew from an early request by physicians for programming help. In an Epic interview post published May 5, 2025, she recalled: “I was young, I didn’t know it was hard,” she says of building a system to track patient data over time.
How did Faulkner build Epic Systems?
She focused on software for healthcare organizations
Epic develops software for health systems and other clinical organizations. Its products span inpatient and outpatient settings and include patient-facing services. Rather than treating a patient’s information as a record belonging only to one visit, Epic frames its EHR as a longitudinal record that can support care across time and settings. That model aligned the company’s work with the growing use of electronic records by hospitals and health systems.

Hospital adoption turned a small company into infrastructure
The clearest independent measure in the available evidence is the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology’s (ONC) adoption series. It tracks Epic’s share of non-federal acute-care hospitals—not the share of every U.S. medical record, all healthcare settings, or patient encounters.

The figures show a dramatic increase in Epic’s presence across U.S. acute-care hospitals. They do not establish why any particular hospital selected Epic, how its implementation went, or whether its use produced better or worse clinical results.

How has Epic influenced U.S. healthcare?
Its records are used across a large share of acute-care hospitals
When a vendor’s EHR is used by many hospitals, its software becomes part of the country’s health-information infrastructure: clinicians and organizations use it to document care, and patients may encounter its services as part of their interactions with health systems. Epic says more than 325 million patients have a current electronic record in its system. That is a company-reported count, not an independently verified estimate of distinct people or a measure of how many patients use Epic in a given year.
Epic also reported that its software was used by more than 3,600 hospitals in a May 5, 2025 company post. That figure is a company description of platform reach; it is not the same measure as ONC’s share of non-federal acute-care hospitals.

Care Everywhere extends information exchange beyond one organization
Epic’s Care Everywhere service is its most direct example of influence beyond an individual health system. Epic says the service exchanges over 30 million patient records daily, with around half exchanged with organizations using a different interoperable EHR. These are company-reported activity figures. Exchange volume shows that information is being shared; it does not show that every exchange is complete, timely, frictionless, or clinically beneficial.
Epic also describes FHIR-based APIs that allow patients to send health-record information to third-party apps they choose, as well as more than 1,000 publicly available API and interface specifications. Those are Epic’s descriptions of its technical offerings, not independent assessments of how consistently information flows between systems or how useful it is in practice.

A narrower example of exchange beyond provider-to-provider care is Epic’s reported relationship with the Social Security Administration (SSA). Epic says 2.7 million records were exchanged between Epic health systems and the SSA in 2025, and describes the relationship as 14 years old as of 2026. The volume illustrates a use outside routine care between providers, but does not establish the quality or outcome of each exchange.

Epic’s widespread hospital adoption and its reported exchange activity support a clear conclusion: the company has become a significant U.S. health-information infrastructure provider. They do not establish that Epic alone made healthcare more affordable, improved quality, reduced errors, or produced better patient outcomes. Those are separate questions requiring independent evidence about clinical results and costs, not just adoption or data volume.

Epic’s own materials describe its services and their intended benefits. For criticism, STAT has characterized Epic as a major force in health-data digitization and pointed to reporting about a sepsis algorithm criticized for faulty alarms, as well as litigation. The available account does not provide enough detail to characterize the underlying evidence, the status or outcome of legal claims, or Epic’s responses. Those references should not be treated as proof of a specific finding about the company.
Who controls Epic, and what has the company said about its future?
Ownership and succession
Epic remains privately held. In a February 2026 post, the company said Faulkner established trusts that will control a supermajority of its voting stock after her death. Epic’s explanation describes two share classes: Class A voting shares and Class B non-voting shares, with roughly one voting share for every 99 non-voting shares. These are the company’s statements about its governance and succession plan.
AI and other development plans
In a March 13, 2026 post, Epic described work on AI charting that drafts clinical notes, Cosmos diagnostic insights based on 300 million deidentified patient records, and preventive-care tools. These are company descriptions of its products and development direction. They do not establish that the tools improve diagnostic accuracy, reduce clinician workload, or change patient outcomes.
