Carnival Rewards replaced the VIFP Club on September 1, 2026, shifting status qualification from days sailed to eligible spending while separating status progress from redeemable value. The change has drawn sharp comments from some passengers, but the available reactions are anecdotal—not evidence that most Carnival customers oppose the program. Here is how the new rules work, what former VIFP members keep, and what to check before expecting credit.
What changed when Carnival Rewards replaced VIFP?
The new program took effect September 1, 2026. Carnival initially announced a June 2026 launch, then moved it to September 1 in a December 1, 2025 update. The current rules—not the superseded launch timetable—govern the transition.
VIFP status was based primarily on days sailed. Carnival Rewards uses eligible spending to award two separate balances: Points, which can be redeemed, and Status Qualifying Stars, which count toward tier status. Carnival says members earn 3 Points and 3 Stars per eligible US dollar spent. Casino activity has separate earning rules; consult Carnival’s current program terms for the applicable rules and exclusions.
Carnival describes the redesign as recognition of both cruising frequency and guests’ broader engagement with the brand. Its president, Christine Duffy, said the change was intended to make recognition more meaningful and address the difficulty of delivering the experience Diamond and Platinum members deserved. That is Carnival’s rationale; whether the new structure is more valuable depends on an individual passenger’s spending, travel pattern, and tier.

How do Points and Stars work?
Points are for eligible redemptions
Points are the redeemable side of the program. Carnival says members can apply them toward eligible cruise fare and eligible onboard purchases through the Carnival HUB app. Redemption for pre-cruise purchases is planned for a future release and is not yet an available feature under the current description.
Stars determine status
Status Qualifying Stars measure progress toward Rewards tiers. The four tiers are Red, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond. Because both Points and Stars are tied to eligible spending, a passenger who sails often but spends relatively little on qualifying items may progress differently from someone with fewer trips and more eligible spend.

Points and Stars are not transferable. Points remain active if the member has qualifying earning or redemption activity during each three-year period. If a member opts out, the existing Points balance is zeroed at midnight on the opt-out date; after that, future Points expire six months after their transaction dates unless the member re-enrolls in time.
Which spending counts—and who receives the credit?
Carnival’s current rules include cruise fare, gratuities, transfers, Carnival Vacation Protection, and eligible pre-cruise and onboard purchases. Not every amount paid to Carnival qualifies. Government taxes and fees, required cruise fees and expenses, some fare types, certain air travel, and purchases funded with Points or some credits are excluded. The full terms should be checked for the specific transaction, since the label “Carnival purchase” alone does not establish eligibility.

- Shared stateroom booking: Fare-related Points and Stars are allocated among eligible guests in the stateroom.

- Paid but did not sail: A person who paid for a booking but did not travel does not receive the traveling guests’ fare credit.
- Household members: Do not assume one family member’s payment or account activity will earn another member credit; enroll and verify the allocation.
What happens to former VIFP Platinum and Diamond status?
Carnival added transition protections for qualifying former upper-tier members. A qualifying former Diamond member receives lifetime Rewards Diamond after enrolling. A qualifying former Platinum member receives Platinum through December 31, 2028, plus a 10,000-Star boost at the start of each new two-year earning cycle. Former Platinum and Diamond members can enroll through the end of 2028 for this transition treatment, subject to Carnival’s data-retention policies.
Enrollment matters: do not assume status or legacy credit appears without taking the required step. Check the account after enrolling to confirm the converted tier and the information Carnival has applied. The current help page controls the post-launch transition rules; earlier announcements used earlier dates and assumptions.

Which VIFP recognition continues, and what was discontinued?
The former VIFP gift and Gold pin have been discontinued. Platinum and Diamond ship-specific pins continue. Rewards also recognizes sailing-day milestones at 50, 100, 200, and every subsequent 100 days sailed. Enrolled members’ prior days carry forward toward those milestones, but milestones reached before the transition are not paid retroactively.

Under Carnival’s LinkedIn launch announcement, individual commenters wrote, “My loyalty for decades now means nothing to Carnival” and “This has now gone from a loyalty program that is reciprocated on both ends to a money grab.” Those comments convey a real concern: a spend-based system can feel less reciprocal to passengers who valued status earned through repeated sailings, particularly if their spending does not translate into the same tier progression.

They do not establish how representative that view is. The comments are self-selected, and no representative survey, retention study, booking-impact estimate, or quantified measure of opposition is available in the cited material. The more useful test for an individual is to compare their expected eligible spend and sailing pattern with the new tier and redemption rules rather than infer value from either Carnival’s promotional rationale or a comment thread.
What should former VIFP members do?
- Enroll in Carnival Rewards if you want to receive any applicable legacy transition treatment or participate in the program.
- Check your account for the converted status, carried-forward sailing days, and eligible Points or Stars.
- Review the current full terms for your fare type and spending, especially exclusions and shared-booking allocations.
- Check who is charged for onboard purchases if you want the account holder—not another traveler—to receive the associated credit.
- Track Points activity if you intend to keep a balance, and understand the consequences before opting out.
Because Carnival’s terms can change, confirm the current rules before booking or changing how a trip is paid for. A meaningful comparison requires a passenger’s actual eligible fare, onboard spending, and legacy tier; the per-dollar earning rate by itself does not show whether the new arrangement is better for that person.
