What did the 2025 USDA lease termination list say?
Successful Farming reported on March 14, 2025, that more than 100 USDA offices were on the DOGE Wall of Receipts lease termination list. The offices were reported across 39 states and four territories. The agencies named included the Farm Service Agency (FSA), Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Forest Service, Rural Housing Service, Agricultural Marketing Service, and Food Safety and Inspection Service. The same report’s breakdown described 36 NRCS offices as affected, across 22 states, Puerto Rico, and the Northern Mariana Islands; California had five on that initial list. It also reported eight state FSA offices and 14 county FSA offices across 12 states, with additional Puerto Rico entries. Does a lease termination listing mean an office closed?
No. A lease entry, an office’s physical location, and whether a particular USDA service remains available are separate questions. A listing alone does not establish that an office closed, that staff moved, or that services ended.

In March 2025, USDA acting deputy undersecretary for farm production and conservation Steve Peterson described the lease review as an opportunity to evaluate rising rents and possibly renegotiate lower rates. His comments, reported by Agri-Pulse and reproduced by University of Illinois Farm Policy News, explained the review but did not confirm the outcome for any particular location. A GSA spokesperson told Agri-Pulse that, where terminations affected public-facing facilities or existing tenants, the agency was working with its agency partners to secure suitable alternative space. How did the list change?
Subsequent reports show why a location should always be tied to a date and agency label. May 2025 coverage documented offices being removed from the list and cases where an office could disappear under one USDA agency label while appearing under another. - FSA: Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, was the one state FSA office listed; Greenville, North Carolina, and Utuado, Puerto Rico, were the two county FSA offices listed.
- NRCS: Gallatin, Tennessee; Greensboro, North Carolina; Greenwood and Pearl, Mississippi; Griffin, Georgia; Portland, Oregon; Renton, Washington; and Wasilla, Alaska, were the eight listed offices.
The July 2 report also gave a listed savings total of $9.83 million. That was DOGE’s reported figure, not an independently established amount of realized savings. The 31-office count and locations are a July 2, 2025 snapshot, not current status information. Successful Farming, July 2, 2025
What did officials and lawmakers say about local effects?
On May 14, 2025, Senator Adam Schiff and congressional co-signatories wrote that they were concerned about intended lease terminations affecting nine California USDA field offices: Bakersfield, Blythe, Los Angeles, Madera, Mt. Shasta, Oxnard, Salinas, Woodland, and Yreka. Their letter cited $59.4 billion in California farm cash receipts for 2023. What does GAO’s review of DOGE savings establish?
A 2026 Government Accountability Office review found transparency and validation problems with savings reported on the Wall of Receipts. GAO said it validated 79 leases that expired at the same time they were terminated; those leases therefore had calculated savings of zero. This is program-wide context about how reported lease savings were assessed, not an update on whether a specific USDA office is open. - Identify the service and agency. Determine whether you need FSA, NRCS, or another USDA agency; a lease listing for one agency does not establish the status of another agency’s services.
- Check the agency’s current office information. Use the relevant USDA agency’s official office locator or contact information rather than relying on a March or July 2025 list.
- Call before traveling. Confirm the office’s current address, hours, and availability of the specific service you need with the local or state FSA or NRCS office.
- Ask what a reported change means. Clarify whether the lease was listed, removed, or terminated; whether the office moved; and where the service is currently provided. Those statuses are not interchangeable.
The reviewed sources do not provide a comprehensive authoritative roster of each USDA office’s status in October 2026. Do not infer that an office is closed, that staff or records have moved, or that service has stopped solely because its lease appeared on a historical DOGE list.
