Why Boeing Wants the 737 MAX 7 and 10 Certified—and What’s at Stake

Boeing’s filings point to delivery and cash-flow exposure, while airlines have distinct capacity and route needs. The 737-7 is FAA-certified; the cited 737-10 update still described unfinished regulatory work.

Boeing has a practical financial reason to pursue certification of the 737 MAX 7 and 10: it needs to complete the aircraft and preserve its ability to deliver them. In its 2025 Form 10-K, Boeing warned that failure to deliver aircraft, increase production rates, or certify the two variants in line with its assumptions could adversely affect its financial position, results and cash flows. Certification also matters to airlines seeking different aircraft sizes and route capabilities—but approval is a regulatory safety gate, not a commercial switch Boeing can simply flip.

What is the certification status of the 737 MAX 7 and 10?

The 737-7 is certified; the 737-10 is not confirmed as certified

The FAA says it issued an amended type certificate and updated Production Limitation Record for the 737 MAX 7 on August 3, 2026, after almost a decade of review. The agency required flight-control software, flightcrew alerting and a redesigned engine anti-ice system. It also says inspectors will continue monitoring Boeing production facilities. FAA certification announcement.

The latest cited Boeing update for the 737-10, dated July 28, 2026, said planned certification flight testing was complete, but development assurance reviews, system safety assessments and final FAA deliverables remained. Boeing said it was working toward certification in 2026 and customer deliveries in 2027. Those were company targets, not FAA approval or a guaranteed delivery schedule; the available cited update does not establish a later certificate. Boeing’s 737-10 update.

Certification, production authorization, delivery and an airline’s entry into service are distinct milestones. A type certificate establishes regulatory approval of the aircraft design; it does not by itself mean every aircraft is ready for delivery or that an airline has begun operating it.

Why certification matters to Boeing’s finances

Boeing’s own risk disclosure gives the clearest answer. In its 2025 Form 10-K, the company said that if it could not deliver aircraft and/or increase production rates or certify the 737-7 and 737-10 consistent with its assumptions, its financial position, results of operations and cash flows would be adversely affected. Boeing reported approximately 35 aircraft of these two variants in inventory as of December 31, 2025. Boeing’s 2025 Form 10-K.

That disclosure identifies exposure, not a forecast of how much certification would earn Boeing. It does not provide a variant-specific revenue figure or say that all inventory aircraft will be delivered immediately after approval. The grounded financial point is narrower: delayed certification can constrain the company’s ability to complete and deliver aircraft while affecting the production and cash-flow assumptions it has disclosed.

Why airlines might want both variants

The two aircraft address different combinations of passenger capacity and range. Boeing’s published specifications and product positioning show the trade-off; these are manufacturer figures, not an independent airline operating-cost comparison. Boeing 737 MAX specifications.

Variant Boeing-listed two-class seating Boeing-listed range Positioning and potential fit
737-7 135–160 seats Up to 3,800 nautical miles Boeing describes it as the smaller, longer-range MAX variant and says it suits customers operating from high-altitude and hot-climate airports.
737-10 185–210 seats Up to 3,100 nautical miles Boeing describes it as the largest MAX, with the family’s strongest per-seat economics.

For an airline, the practical appeal is being able to match aircraft size and range to a route and expected demand. A smaller aircraft can serve a route where the larger model’s capacity may not fit the plan; a larger one can provide more seats when demand supports them. The specifications alone do not determine whether either aircraft is cheaper or more profitable on a particular airline’s routes.

Southwest offers a concrete example of customer relevance. Its July 2026 filing says its contractual MAX 7 and MAX 8 order book, extending to 2031, was designed to support growth and fleet modernization while preserving flexibility in aircraft size and mix. Southwest expects to be the 737-7 launch customer. That order book indicates a role in the airline’s plans, but it is not proof of a guaranteed delivery timetable. Southwest’s July 2026 filing.

Why FAA approval is more than a business milestone

The FAA’s 737-7 approval followed review of flight controls, system safety assessments, human factors and flightcrew alerting. The required design and system changes—and the FAA’s continuing production-facility monitoring—show why Boeing cannot treat certification as an internal deadline alone. The regulator must determine that the aircraft meets applicable requirements.

Boeing said its July 2026 work included engine anti-ice and enhanced angle-of-attack changes intended for production across the MAX family and retrofit to the in-service fleet. Those are Boeing’s descriptions of the changes and intended scope. Boeing’s July 16 progress update.

The scale of the work is reflected in Boeing’s reported test-program figures: 686 flight-test hours across 441 flights and 349 ground-test hours for the 737-7 program, and more than 2,060 flight hours across 976 flights for the 737-10 program. These are Boeing-reported figures in its July 2026 updates, not independent assessments of certification readiness. Boeing’s July 16 progress update; Boeing’s July 28 update.

What the stakes do—and do not—mean

Boeing has more than 7,200 aircraft in the 737 MAX family order book, with 2,360 delivered through June 2026, according to the company. Those family-wide figures help explain why the MAX program matters, but they should not be mistaken for orders or deliveries specific to the 737-7 and 737-10. Boeing 737 MAX specifications.

So the real reason is not established private desperation. The evidence supports three concrete incentives: protect Boeing’s ability to complete aircraft and deliver them, serve airline plans that call for different sizes and route capabilities, and reduce exposure to the financial risks Boeing itself has disclosed if certification and delivery assumptions slip. The 737-7 has cleared its FAA certification milestone; the cited 737-10 update records progress and a Boeing target, not completed approval.
