Bungie announced on July 31, 2024, that it would eliminate 220 roles—roughly 17% of its studio workforce. Two former employees told TechCrunch they were surprised by how the news reached them, but their accounts do not establish how the broader workforce experienced the announcement. Bungie attributed the cuts to financial pressure, rising development costs and industry conditions. The 17% figure applies to the 2024 announcement, not to Bungie’s workforce today.
What Bungie announced in July 2024
Bungie said it would eliminate 220 roles, describing that number as roughly 17% of its studio workforce. The announcement also outlined two distinct changes that should not be counted as additional layoffs:
- 155 roles, roughly 12%: Bungie planned to integrate these positions into Sony Interactive Entertainment.
- One incubation project: Bungie planned to spin it out as a new team within PlayStation Studios.
Bungie said more than 850 team members would continue building Destiny and Marathon after the announced changes. These figures and plans were reported in Bungie’s July 31, 2024 statement.
Why former employees said the announcement was a surprise
TechCrunch’s account is based on interviews with two former employees, not a survey of Bungie staff. Their comments describe different parts of the experience: one said the public announcement came before he received notice that his position was affected; the other described a mismatch between recent management communications and what appeared to be happening behind the scenes.

A public post before a meeting invitation
Former Bungie sound designer Tzivi Sherman told TechCrunch: “Saw the tweet then about 45 minutes later got an email with a meeting request and an ominous title,” He said he saw Bungie’s public X post before receiving the meeting invitation and learning shortly afterward that his role was affected.
A gap between reassurance and events
Former product support technician Guilhem Lagarde told TechCrunch: “Like they’re telling us one thing, but behind the scenes, something else is happening.” He described management as having signaled in recent months that the company was doing well.
These accounts explain the headline’s “caught off-guard” framing, but they do not show that every employee received news in the same way or shared the same reaction. TechCrunch also reported that Bungie had cut 100 employees in October 2023, making the July 2024 announcement its second round of cuts since Sony’s 2022 acquisition. TechCrunch’s July 31, 2024 report contains the two employees’ accounts and that history.

What Bungie said was behind the cuts
Bungie CEO Pete Parsons called the decision “a necessary decision to refocus our studio and our business with more realistic goals and viable financials.” In the studio’s statement, Bungie cited rising development costs, difficult economic conditions and a downturn in the games industry, along with financial difficulties and an earlier expansion that stretched teams and support structures beyond what the studio could sustain.
Bungie also pointed to its development focus. Parsons said the studio had pursued games across three enduring franchises while establishing incubation efforts, and that this model stretched its organization beyond what it could support with Destiny and Marathon as its two main products in development. He cited Destiny 2: Lightfall falling short of the quality Bungie wanted and the need to give The Final Shape and Marathon more time.
These are Bungie’s stated reasons, not independently measured findings. The company’s statement does not quantify how much each factor contributed to the job reductions.

How to read the 2024 figure alongside the later 2026 cuts
The 220 roles and roughly 17% figure describe Bungie’s July 2024 announcement only. In a separate update dated June 25, 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment described a later Bungie workforce reduction affecting a significant number of employees, including most of the Destiny team and some Marathon team members. Sony said it had considered alternatives and concluded that a reduction was needed to align studio resources with priorities and long-term goals.
Sony’s update did not provide a numeric total in the available statement excerpt, so it does not support adding a figure to the 2026 reduction or combining it with the 2024 percentage. The later event is described in Sony Interactive Entertainment’s June 25, 2026 update.
