China Hasn’t Stopped Buying U.S. Soybeans, but a Slowdown Is Possible

China continued buying U.S. soybeans through September, but tariffs, South American supply and weaker market economics may reduce near-term orders.

No—China had not stopped buying U.S. soybeans as of October 7, 2026. USDA-reported sales to China continued in September, and Reuters reported that Chinese buyers booked a sizeable batch of U.S. cargoes earlier that month. The more cautious takeaway is that future purchases may weaken: China has booked South American supplies, while tariffs, soft feed demand and poor crushing margins weigh on the economics of buying U.S. beans.

What the recent sales show

USDA export-sales reports and Reuters’ account of trader activity point to continued purchases—not a confirmed shutdown. They measure different things: USDA reports sales by week and delivery marketing year, while Reuters reported traders’ estimates of cargo bookings for a specified shipment window. A sale is not the same as a shipment arriving in China.

Report date or period What was reported How to read it
As of August 13, 2026; reported in USDA’s September 4 China Oilseeds and Products Update USDA FAS said China had purchased 5.7 million metric tons of U.S. soybeans for delivery in marketing year (MY) 2026/27. A dated official sales total, not a final full-year import figure.
Week before September 10, 2026 Reuters, citing four traders, reported that China bought 14 to 15 U.S. cargoes—about 1 million metric tons—for shipment from U.S. Gulf terminals between December and February. A trader-sourced estimate of booked cargoes and their shipment window, not a final customs-arrival total.
Wednesday before Reuters’ September 10 report Reuters reported that USDA had recorded 340,000 metric tons of U.S. soybean sales to China and another 100,000 metric tons to unknown destinations. The China sales were reported as such; the separate unknown-destination volume was not confirmed as China-bound.
September 3, 2026 USDA FAS reported private-exporter sales of 192,000 metric tons to China for MY 2026/27 delivery. A weekly reported sale for the specified marketing year.
September 10, 2026 USDA FAS reported private-exporter sales of 272,000 metric tons to China. A weekly reported sale for MY 2026/27 delivery.
September 18, 2026 USDA FAS reported private-exporter sales of 111,000 metric tons to China. A weekly reported sale for MY 2026/27 delivery.
September 24, 2026 USDA FAS reported private-exporter sales of 120,000 metric tons to China. A weekly reported sale for MY 2026/27 delivery.

The USDA figures are reported sales, not a tally of cargoes already unloaded in China. The USDA figures above describe separate weekly sales and an earlier cumulative total; they should not be added together as if they all represented distinct purchases outside that total.

Why “unknown destination” needs a caveat

As of August 13, USDA also listed 3.8 million metric tons of U.S. soybean sales for MY 2026/27 under “unknown destinations.” The agency noted that Chinese state-owned enterprises sometimes use that designation, but it did not identify those sales as China-bound. Treating all of that volume as Chinese buying would overstate what the records establish.

Why the outlook for new U.S. orders has weakened

On September 30, Reuters reported that Chinese purchases of U.S. soybeans were likely to decline in the coming months. That was a forward-looking market assessment, not confirmation that orders had ceased. The report identified several pressures on demand and on the relative appeal of U.S. supplies.

South American beans compete for the same buying window

USDA’s Beijing annual report said Brazilian supply and lower prices had favored South American origin during the period it covered. By late September, Reuters reported that Chinese buyers had booked soybeans from Brazil and Argentina for October and much of November. Those bookings give buyers alternatives for near-term supply, but they do not prove that China will stop buying from the United States for later delivery.

Tariffs affect the delivered economics

Reuters reported on September 30 that U.S. soybeans still faced an additional 10% Chinese tariff. USDA’s earlier Beijing report also described tariff-related barriers to private-sector purchases. A tariff adds to the cost of importing U.S. beans and can make another origin more attractive, all else equal. The tariff figure describes the late-September status in Reuters’ report; it should not be assumed to describe every earlier period or future policy.

Feed demand and crushing margins matter too

Reuters cited weak animal-feed demand and negative soybean-crushing margins as reasons buyers might reduce purchases. Crushers process soybeans into products including meal used in animal feed and oil; weak demand or unfavorable processing economics can make additional beans less attractive to buy. These explanations were part of Reuters’ market-source outlook, not a USDA measurement of future Chinese purchases.

State and private buyers may not respond alike

USDA’s Beijing annual report said purchases in the earlier period were limited to state-owned enterprises, in part amid tariff conditions and available South American supply. That description applies to the period covered by that report; it does not establish that every Chinese purchase is made by a state entity. It also does not turn sales listed to unknown destinations into confirmed Chinese orders.

How this fits the longer trade timeline

The current buying pattern follows a period of disruption. USDA’s Beijing annual report, citing Trade Data Monitor, put China’s U.S. soybean imports at 22.9 million metric tons in MY 2024/25, down 8% year on year. The report said U.S. arrivals fell to zero from September through December 2025, then described purchases resuming after the October 2025 Busan meeting.

In that same annual-report context, USDA said China had purchased or shipped 10.8 million metric tons toward a 12-million-ton commitment by February 26, 2026. A further 2.19 million metric tons recorded as “unknown” was not confirmed as China-bound. These are earlier-period figures, not an updated measure of China’s full-year 2026/27 buying.

What a slowdown could mean for markets and household budgets

For farmers and commodity-market participants, the distinction between a pause in new bookings and a completed shutdown matters: confirmed sales and scheduled shipments can continue even while traders expect fewer future orders. If Chinese demand shifts toward Brazil or Argentina, competition among origins and shipment timing can affect trade flows and market expectations. The evidence available by October 7 does not establish the final volume China will buy for MY 2026/27 or the price effect of any slowdown.

Outsidepride Soybean Seeds - 5 lbs High-Protein & High Yield Heirloom Variety Soy Beans, Ideal for Oil Processing, Forage, Animal Food Plots, & Wildlife Feed for Poultry & Other Farm Animals
  • HEIRLOOM VARIETY & HIGH YIELD: Outsidepride soy bean seeds is a robust heirloom strain known for its high yield, producing over 3 bushels per acre more than the popular Manokin variety, making it a valuable choice for maximizing harvest output. This variety is perfect for outdoor gardening enthusiasts looking to optimize their yard space.
  • RICH IN PROTEIN & OIL WITH VERSATILE USES: Containing about 18% oil and 38% protein, this soybean variety is perfect for producing high-quality soy bean oil and protein-rich meal. These soybeans can be processed into a wide range of products, including soy milk powder, soy flour, soy protein, tofu, and various industrial non-food products, showcasing its versatility. Ideal for making various soy-based meals such as edamame snacks.
  • OPTIMAL PLANTING GUIDELINES FOR MAXIMUM YIELD: For best results, plant soybean seeds at a depth of 0.75 to 1.5 inches, with row spacing between 7.5 and 15 inches, depending on soil type and tillage. This ensures uniform seed placement and optimal growth, adapting well to midwestern states and capturing a significant percentage of non-GMO acres.
  • HIGH-PROTEIN ANIMAL FEED: The high-protein fiber left after oil extraction is ideal for animal feed, particularly for poultry and swine industries, which consume over half of the processed soybean meal. This meal is also crucial for cattle, other farm animals, and pets, ensuring they receive the necessary nutrients for growth and development. A great addition to feed mixes for cowpeas and other legumes.
  • ECONOMIC AND NUTRITIONAL: As the most economically important bean globally, soybeans provide essential vegetable protein for millions and are key ingredients in hundreds of chemical products. A 60-pound bushel of our soybeans seed yields about 11 pounds of crude soybean oil and 47 pounds of soybean meal. Beneficial for producing shelf-stable goods for long-term use.

For households, the soybean story is not a direct signal that grocery prices will rise or fall. Soybeans are used for products such as meal and oil, but the cited reports do not quantify how a change in Chinese purchases would affect U.S. retail prices. The trade data support a conclusion about sourcing and buying prospects—not a specific forecast for food or household costs.

What is known—and what remains uncertain

  • Established: USDA reported China-bound U.S. soybean sales through September, and Reuters reported trader estimates of substantial U.S. cargo bookings for December-to-February shipment.
  • Not established: The final amount China will purchase for MY 2026/27, whether the expected near-term slowdown will become a suspension, or whether all sales to unknown destinations are destined for China.
  • Subject to change: Relative crop prices, tariff treatment, shipment availability, demand for feed and crushing margins can all alter purchasing decisions.
