Common Cause said the Washington Post withdrew a planned “Fire Elon Musk” advertisement shortly before publication, despite what the group described as a signed agreement. What Common Cause says happened
In a February 16, 2025 statement, Common Cause said its ad was scheduled for the newspaper’s White House edition and that the Post rejected it at the last minute. The organization wrote, “Our ad was all set to run, with a signed contract and all,” and said it was given no explanation. What the planned advertisement said
The campaign artwork shows Elon Musk above an image of the White House and asks, “Who’s running this country? Donald Trump or Elon Musk?” It also calls on President Donald Trump to fire Musk. The campaign artwork documents the ad’s wording and design, not whether it was accepted, printed, or why it was withdrawn.
What was reportedly included in the ad buy
Gizmodo reported on February 17, 2025, that Common Cause partnered with the Southern Poverty Law Center Action Fund and that the groups said the arrangement was worth $115,000. The reported plan included a wrap covering the front and back of the paper as well as a full-page ad. Did the Post explain why it withdrew the ad?
The sources cited here do not establish the newspaper’s reason. Common Cause said it received no explanation, but that statement does not independently establish the Post’s position or motive. Common Cause president Kase Solomón asked, “Is it because we’re critical of what’s happening with Elon Musk?” As reported by Common Dreams while relaying The Hill’s account, this was Solomón’s speculation—not evidence that the Post acted for that reason.
