Its announcement does not confirm the exact 110-million-ton figure in the headline, and in-place volume is not the same as recoverable reserves or oil ready for sale.
What CNOOC discovered
CNOOC announced the Qinhuangdao 29-6 discovery in central Bohai Sea on December 24, 2025. The company described it as a shallow Neogene discovery in the Minghuazhen Formation containing medium-heavy crude. CNOOC said its proved in-place volume exceeded 100 million tons of oil equivalent; the announcement gave a threshold, not an exact 110 million tons. CNOOC’s announcement is the source for those figures.
What the 100-million-ton figure does—and does not—measure
“In place” refers to the estimated quantity of hydrocarbons in the reservoir. It does not mean that all of that material can be extracted, sold, or counted as recoverable reserves. The cited announcement supplies no recoverable-reserves estimate, and it is a company report rather than an independent reserve audit.
The distinction matters when interpreting the headline: the evidence supports a large discovery with more than 100 million tons of oil equivalent in proved in-place volume, not a claim that China has gained 110 million tons of commercially available oil.

What the discovery well showed
CNOOC reported that the discovery well was drilled and completed to a depth of 1,688 meters and encountered 66.7 meters of oil pay zones. The well tested at approximately 2,560 barrels of crude oil per day. That is a test result from the discovery well, not a field-wide production rate or a forecast of sustained output. CNOOC’s release reports the well details.
Has the field started producing oil?
CNOOC later reported that Qinhuangdao 29-6 was successfully appraised in 2025. Appraisal helps evaluate a discovery, but it is not the same as development approval or commercial production. The company’s March 2026 results announcement reports the appraisal; the sources cited here do not establish a commercial start-up date or current field production.

Why the Bohai Sea location matters
CNOOC describes Bohai as China’s largest crude oil production base. The company reported three new discoveries and successful appraisal of 10 oil- and gas-bearing structures in the area in 2025. That context makes Qinhuangdao 29-6 part of a broader offshore exploration effort, but it does not establish how much the new field will ultimately contribute. CNOOC’s Bohai operating-area page provides the company’s regional summary.
What CNOOC says is geologically significant
CNOOC Chief Geologist Xu Changgui said the discovery followed further work on hydrocarbon migration and accumulation in shallow Neogene slope zones, combined with technological innovation. He said the result challenges the conventional view that slope areas primarily channel hydrocarbons rather than hold substantial accumulations. That is the company geologist’s interpretation, not an independent assessment.
