That is a starting price, not a quote for every route or date. The mileage price depends on the itinerary and availability, and you still pay applicable taxes and fees.
What does 7,500 miles get you?
The 7,500-mile figure is American’s advertised starting level for a one-way award originating in North America on an eligible American Airlines flight. American says mileage levels vary by date and flight; the price for a particular itinerary appears when you search and book. See American’s award-flight information.
It is not a fixed domestic fare or a promise that a seat on your preferred flight will cost that amount. American says an award may be available for any seat on an American or American Eagle flight, including the last seat, but the mileage requirement can be higher depending on availability. Partner airlines have their own limits on award-seat availability. The AAdvantage terms and conditions, effective March 1, 2026, govern award availability and mileage requirements.
Why “free flight” does not mean no payment
Using miles does not necessarily eliminate the cash cost. American lists applicable taxes and carrier-imposed fees starting at $5.60 per person per award; the actual amount depends on the itinerary and is displayed during booking. Some partner awards, including flights on British Airways or Iberia, may carry additional charges. Those amounts can depend on the departure and arrival cities, destination, and cabin. How to check the miles for your trip
- On aa.com or in the American app, enter your origin, destination, and travel dates, then select “Redeem miles.”
- Review the results for each direction. Partner flights may appear in the results; use the airline filter if you want to focus on a particular carrier.
- Open the itinerary you would actually book and check both its mileage requirement and cash total, including taxes and fees, before confirming.
American’s guidance on using miles for travel covers booking channels and partner-flight searches. Because prices depend on the actual itinerary, a general starting figure cannot tell you what your dates will cost.
How to estimate a round trip or multi-city journey
The 7,500-mile figure is one way, not a round-trip price. A round trip uses the applicable award for each direction, so search both legs rather than treating twice the advertised floor as a quote. The same principle applies to a multi-city journey: check each segment in the proposed itinerary.
