What to Know About Travel Insurance Before You Book a Trip

Before buying travel insurance, assess nonrefundable trip costs, existing benefits, medical and evacuation needs, policy exclusions, and purchase deadlines.

Travel insurance may reimburse eligible prepaid costs or help pay for medical care and emergency evacuation, but only when the policy’s terms apply. Before you buy, identify the trip losses you could not comfortably absorb, check what your health insurance and credit card already cover, and compare policy limits, exclusions, and deadlines against your destination and plans.

Should you get travel insurance?

There is no blanket answer. Consider a policy if a covered disruption could leave you with a substantial nonrefundable loss, or if you could not comfortably pay for medical care or evacuation during the trip. First check supplier cancellation rules and benefits you already have through health insurance, a credit card, or homeowners insurance; avoid paying twice for protection you already hold.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) says travel insurance typically costs 5% to 10% of the total trip price. That is a general range, not an individual quote: rates vary with factors such as season, origin, destination, and age. Compare the premium with the specific loss you want to transfer, rather than with the whole trip price alone. NAIC travel insurance guidance

Start with the money at risk

Add up prepaid, nonrefundable airfare, lodging, tours, cruise fare, and other eligible costs. Supplier refund rules may mean some expenses are recoverable without insurance. Insure only costs the policy permits and that you actually want protected.

Then check existing coverage

Ask your health insurer what care it covers at your destination, and review your card’s trip cancellation, interruption, delay, and baggage benefits. Check eligibility rules, limits, and documentation requirements. Homeowners coverage may also apply to belongings away from home. The U.S. Department of State advises travelers to verify their medical coverage abroad; Medicare and Medicaid do not pay for medical care outside the United States. What does travel insurance cover?

Policies can bundle several distinct benefits. A benefit name alone does not establish that a particular event, expense, or traveler is covered: check the policy’s covered reasons, limits, exclusions, and claim requirements.

Trip cancellation

This may reimburse eligible prepaid, nonrefundable expenses if you cancel for a reason the policy covers. NAIC examples include illness or injury, severe weather, transportation disruption, a natural disaster, and certain legal obligations. A serious event is not automatically a covered reason; the contract controls.

Trip interruption and delay

Interruption coverage may reimburse eligible unused trip costs or additional expenses if a covered event forces you to cut travel short. Delay coverage may reimburse specified expenses, such as an overnight hotel stay, after a covered delay. Check the triggering reasons, minimum delay period, sublimits, documentation, and whether the insurer requires approval or coordination.

Travel medical care

Travel medical coverage can help pay for eligible short-term care for illness or injury while traveling. Check whether it is primary or secondary, its deductible and maximum benefit, whether preapproval is required, and whether your medical conditions and planned activities are covered. Do not assume cancellation protection pays medical bills: the State Department says trip cancellation insurance usually does not cover medical costs in other countries.

Emergency medical evacuation

This benefit can cover emergency transportation to an appropriate medical facility and, depending on the policy, transport home. Ask who decides that evacuation is medically necessary, where the insurer may transport you, what the limit is, and whether the assistance service coordinates the trip. The State Department recommends considering evacuation protection where medical care is limited or risk is higher. It reports that an air ambulance evacuation back to the United States can cost $20,000 to $200,000 depending on location and health condition; this is a government-published range, not a universal estimate or quote. U.S. Department of State Medicine and Health guidance

Baggage loss, damage, or delay

Coverage may address some baggage losses or delays, but benefits can be secondary to homeowners insurance or credit-card coverage. Compare per-item and total limits, exclusions, and proof requirements before relying on it.

Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR)

CFAR is an add-on to standard cancellation coverage, not an unconditional full refund. NAIC guidance says it may reimburse 50% to 75% of insured trip costs, with conditions that often include buying within a specified period, insuring the full trip cost, and canceling at least 48 hours before departure. Those figures and conditions are general guidance, not a promise for every plan; confirm the current policy wording. NAIC travel insurance guidance

What does travel insurance exclude?

Standard coverage is not a refund for every reason something goes wrong. Routine changes of mind are generally not covered by standard cancellation benefits unless an applicable CFAR benefit covers the situation and its conditions are met.

NAIC lists common exclusions that can include pre-existing health conditions, pandemics, civil and political unrest, pregnancy and childbirth, and some risky activities. The definitions and exclusions vary by policy. Review the contract and ask the insurer about the exact condition, event, or activity at issue. A policy purchased after a storm has been named is unlikely to cover claims related to that storm. NAIC travel insurance consumer guidance

Also distinguish insurance from other services in a package. A bundle may include non-insurance cancellation waivers or travel assistance such as referrals, translation, help with documents, or lost-luggage assistance. Assistance may be useful, but it is not necessarily an insurance reimbursement.

When should you buy travel insurance?

Check the purchase deadline as soon as you know your trip costs and dates. Some policy features, including certain pre-existing-condition waivers or CFAR benefits, may require purchase within a specified period. A deadline can also depend on when the initial trip deposit was made. Do not wait until a risk is known: a policy bought after a storm is named is unlikely to cover losses related to that storm. Read the plan’s actual timing rules before paying.

How to compare policies before buying

  1. List the costs you want covered. Record prepaid, nonrefundable expenses and check supplier refund terms. Confirm the policy accepts each cost and whether it requires insuring the full trip amount.
  2. Compare cancellation and interruption triggers. Read the covered-reason list, reimbursement ceiling, eligible expenses, documentation rules, and any requirement to contact or obtain approval from the insurer.
  3. Check medical fit. Confirm who is insured, trip duration and destinations, coverage for relevant conditions and prescriptions, deductible, medical maximum, primary or secondary status, preapproval rules, and direct-payment arrangements.
  4. Assess evacuation terms. Compare the limit, definition of medical necessity, permitted destination, repatriation terms, and assistance coordination. Check whether the assistance hotline is available around the clock.
  5. Match the plan to activities and location. List planned activities, including adventure sports, and verify that they are covered. Confirm the destination and travel dates are valid under the plan.
  6. Read exclusions and deadlines. Check pre-existing-condition terms and waiver deadlines, pandemics, civil unrest, pregnancy and childbirth, risky activities, known events, and cancellation timing.
  7. Review delay, baggage, claims, and services. Compare delay and baggage sublimits, proof requirements, claim filing deadlines, emergency contact instructions, and whether bundled assistance is insurance or a separate service.
  8. Weigh the premium against your risk. Compare the price with the amount of loss you could tolerate and the benefits that fill a real gap in your existing coverage.

U.S. market figures provide context, not a reason by themselves to buy. NAIC reports that the U.S. travel insurance protection market saw nearly $5.56 billion in spending during 2022–2024, 46% above 2019; trip cancellation/interruption products represented 94.7% of products purchased in 2022–2024. These figures come from a U.S. Travel Insurance Association market study as reported by NAIC. NAIC travel insurance guidance

What to do if you need to use the policy

Keep the policy documents and emergency contact details accessible while traveling. Follow the plan’s instructions for contacting the insurer or assistance service, especially for evacuation or care that may require preapproval. Save receipts and other records the policy requires, and note the claim deadline. For a specific claim, the written contract and insurer’s instructions determine what evidence and steps are needed.
