Nintendo says Switch 2 prices reflect more than the cost of parts. Its stated reasons include manufacturing costs, exchange rates, regional market conditions and how consumers perceive a price. For games, Nintendo also cites larger files and longer development periods. Later, in 2026, it pointed to rising component costs and tariffs as additional pressure on hardware profitability.
Why does the Nintendo Switch 2 console cost so much?
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said the company considers manufacturing cost alongside consumer price perception, exchange-rate differences compared with the original Switch launch, and market conditions in each region when setting hardware prices. That is Nintendo’s explanation, not a public breakdown of what it costs to build a console or how much profit Nintendo makes on each one. Nintendo’s FY2025 results briefing does not provide a per-unit bill of materials or a cost allocation by component.

The distinction matters: a retail price is not simply the sum of the console’s parts. Nintendo’s explanation includes commercial and regional considerations as well as manufacturing costs, and the company has not quantified the contribution of any one factor to the launch price.
What changed after launch?
In its May 2026 briefing, Nintendo identified rising memory and other component prices, along with tariffs, as pressures on hardware profitability. Its FY2027 forecast incorporated approximately ¥100 billion for the combined cost impact. Nintendo said it combined estimated effects from memory and other component prices with tariffs on cost of goods sold; it did not publish a detailed calculation or explain how much of the total came from each factor. The FY2026 results briefing therefore offers a company-wide forecast figure, not a per-console cost increase.

Furukawa said the later price change was not attributable to one specific factor. He cited changing market conditions affecting Nintendo’s dedicated-game-platform business over the medium to long term, including component prices, foreign-exchange trends and oil prices. Nintendo said it chose to reflect part of those costs in selling prices. Its stated policy is to treat tariffs imposed in a country or region as a cost and incorporate them into prices, while considering platform momentum and hardware installed-base growth if tariff assumptions change.
How much did Switch 2 prices change by region?
Nintendo’s May 2026 announcement listed different adjustments for Japan, the United States and Europe. These are region-specific prices and dates, not a universal worldwide price list. The U.S. figures exclude tax; European My Nintendo Store prices include tax. Nintendo’s price-revision announcement says other regions also had revisions, with details to be announced by the relevant Nintendo subsidiaries.

Nintendo said regional increases differed because market changes affected regions differently. Comparing prices across countries without accounting for effective date, tax treatment and the specific system or storefront can therefore be misleading.
Why do Switch 2 games cost so much?
Nintendo says software pricing takes account of the same broad factors it considers for hardware, plus costs associated with larger game files and longer development periods. It has not stated how much either factor adds to the price of a particular game. A game’s price should not be treated as a transparent measure of its development budget or file size.

The development context is real but does not yield a per-game price calculation. Nintendo says the official internal Switch 2 project began around 2019 and describes the system as retaining the original Switch’s basic design while increasing processing capability, which it said enables developers to create new gameplay experiences. Nintendo has not assigned a public dollar or yen amount to that development period, processing capability or any individual feature. The FY2025 briefing and Nintendo’s developer interview provide that context, not a cost breakdown.

Starting in May 2026, with preorders for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, Nintendo said new Nintendo-published digital games exclusive to Switch 2 would have an MSRP different from their physical versions. Nintendo attributes the difference to the distinct costs of producing and distributing each format, and says the game experience is the same in both. Nintendo of America’s pricing support page describes this policy.
The policy is limited in scope: it concerns new Nintendo-published digital Switch 2 exclusives under the policy, not every third-party release or every retailer’s actual selling price. A different MSRP does not guarantee that a physical copy costs more at every store or in every market.
Quick Recap
What Nintendo’s explanation does—and does not—tell buyers
- It explains the company’s pricing rationale: hardware pricing considers manufacturing costs, consumer perception, exchange rates and regional market conditions; software also reflects larger files and longer development periods.
- It identifies later cost pressures: Nintendo cited memory and other component inflation and tariffs, with approximately ¥100 billion included in its FY2027 forecast for their combined impact.
- It does not reveal console economics: Nintendo has not published a full manufacturing-cost figure, profit margin per console or a breakdown linking a specific component or feature to the retail price.
- It does not establish a single cause: Nintendo described multiple influences and said the later adjustment was not due to one factor alone.
