How Polygon Is Shaping Blockchain Gaming: Polygon PoS, POL and What Players Should Know

Polygon provides infrastructure and ecosystem support for games, but game availability, asset portability and performance depend on each project. Here is what Polygon PoS, POL and the Immutable gaming hub actually establish.

Polygon’s role in blockchain gaming is to provide network infrastructure and ecosystem support—not to guarantee that a game will succeed. Polygon PoS is the network behind the current Polygon-and-Immutable gaming initiative; the token used for gas on Polygon PoS is now POL, although the topic is often still described using the former MATIC name.

What Polygon does for blockchain games

A blockchain can record transactions and asset ownership for a game, but it does not create good gameplay, ensure that a title stays online, or make an item valuable. Those outcomes depend on the game’s developers, rules, community and continuing operation. Polygon’s contribution is the underlying network and related ecosystem tools that developers may choose to use.

That distinction matters because “a game on Polygon” can mean different things: a game may use Polygon PoS for some transactions, use technology from a company in the wider Polygon ecosystem, or simply appear in a directory or partnership announcement. Those are not interchangeable claims about where all gameplay or assets run.

The current example: Gaming on Polygon with Immutable

On October 1, 2025, Polygon Labs and Immutable announced Gaming on Polygon, a discovery and engagement hub for multiple games on Polygon PoS, available through Immutable Play. The announcement described quests, leaderboards and a community reward pool. It said five new games would be introduced at launch and listed a $100,000 community reward pool as a launch incentive. Those are launch details, not confirmation that the same lineup, quests or reward terms are available now.

The announcement also reported Immutable-wide figures: more than 250,000 monthly active users, over 5.5 million Passport signups and $40 million in total value locked. These figures were reported by Immutable in the October 1, 2025 announcement; they are not counts of Polygon gamers or measurements of the Polygon PoS gaming hub.

Polygon’s announcement characterized the initiative as bringing “multiple AAA games to life on Polygon PoS.” That is the company’s description of the project, not independent evidence about game quality, present availability or player numbers. A discovery hub can make games and engagement features easier to find, but it does not by itself establish that a specific game is currently playable or that its assets can be used outside that game.

What cross-chain play and Agglayer may mean

Polygon and Immutable presented Agglayer as a way developers could support movement of players or in-game assets across connected ecosystems. The key qualification is that such movement depends on developers choosing to enable and support it. It is not a universal Polygon feature that automatically makes every item, currency or character portable between games or chains.

Before relying on a portability claim, check the specific game’s current rules. A title must define what can move, which networks are supported, and how the item behaves after transfer. An announcement about an interoperability layer is not the same as a live transfer feature in every participating game.

Polygon PoS, Immutable technology and the sunset zkEVM

Network or stack What the available information establishes What not to assume
Polygon PoS The network featured in the October 2025 Gaming on Polygon announcement. Polygon says POL has been its native gas token since September 2024. That every game in the broader Polygon ecosystem runs all gameplay or assets on Polygon PoS.
Immutable technology Immutable is a partner in the gaming hub and has its own broader technology and tooling. Polygon’s March 2023 announcement named games that had leveraged or selected Immutable technology. That a game using Immutable technology necessarily runs directly on Polygon PoS.
Polygon zkEVM Mainnet Beta Polygon says its sequencer was sunset on July 3, 2026, and the network no longer produces blocks. That it is an operating network for a new or continuing game deployment.

Polygon’s March 2023 announcement named Ubisoft, Atari, Animoca, Decentraland, Somnium Space and The Sandbox among projects or publishers building on Polygon at that time. It also named Gods Unchained, Guild of Guardians, Illuvium, Delysium, EmberSword and GameStop among projects that had leveraged or selected Immutable technology. This is a dated snapshot of announced activity, not evidence that each title remains live, uses Polygon PoS today, or has a particular current deployment.

Examples of games—and the limits of a directory listing

Polygon’s ecosystem explorer has included Decentraland, described as a user-run virtual game world, and DEFY, described as a blockchain mobile game with augmented-reality and real-world exploration elements. They illustrate different kinds of game experiences, but their presence in a directory does not prove current playability or show that every gameplay feature and asset is on Polygon.

For a player deciding whether to start a game, confirm its current status and read its own documentation for the actual network used, wallet requirements, asset rules and any fees. An ecosystem listing or past partnership is a useful lead, not a substitute for checking the game itself.

Network statistics are not gaming-performance results

Polygon Labs’ undated About page, accessed October 7, 2026, lists the following network-wide figures. The page does not establish these as gaming-specific measurements.

Figure Attribution and qualification
8 billion total transactions Polygon Labs’ network-wide figure; not a count of game transactions.
159 million unique wallet addresses Polygon Labs’ network-wide figure; not a count of gamers or people.
110 transactions per second Polygon Labs’ site-reported network figure; the methodology and measurement window are not stated on the page.
$0.002 average transaction cost Polygon Labs’ network-wide figure; it is not a guaranteed fee for a particular game action.

These figures can provide broad context about Polygon’s network, but they do not show how a particular game performs under load, what a player will pay for a transaction, or how many people are actively playing. The available figures are not an independent, gaming-specific comparison with other networks.

MATIC is the old name to know; POL is the current Polygon PoS gas token

Polygon’s September 3, 2025 update says POL became the native gas token for Polygon PoS in September 2024, with MATIC migrating to POL at a 1:1 ratio. Polygon reported that 99% of MATIC on Polygon had migrated as of that September 2025 update. The reported percentage is a dated snapshot, not a claim about the current share.

Polygon says holders of MATIC on Ethereum can use Polygon Portal to migrate. Check Polygon’s current official instructions before taking any action; do not rely on an old guide or infer an asset’s role from its displayed ticker alone. Polygon notes that a wallet may still show MATIC if its RPC configuration or token metadata is not updated.

For players, the practical point is to check the network and token required by the specific game or transaction. The name in an article, an old wallet label and the asset’s current network role may not match.

What happened to Polygon zkEVM Mainnet Beta assets

Polygon says Polygon zkEVM Mainnet Beta stopped producing blocks when its sequencer was sunset on July 3, 2026. It is not an active chain for new gaming activity. Polygon’s claims interface is stated to remain available through December 31, 2027, but its scope is limited: it supports recovery of assets held in self-custodied externally owned accounts (EOAs), operates independently of the sequencer, and does not recover assets held inside smart contracts. Anyone affected should read Polygon’s current official claims guidance and verify that an asset meets the stated conditions.

How to assess a Polygon game before using it

  • Verify the live product. Look for a current game site or official announcement rather than relying only on an ecosystem directory or a years-old partnership.
  • Identify the actual network. Check whether the game uses Polygon PoS, Immutable technology or another deployment for the feature you care about.
  • Read the asset rules. Confirm whether items are transferable, where they can be used, and what happens if the game changes or shuts down. On-chain ownership does not guarantee continued access to a game or utility for an asset.
  • Check costs and onboarding. Find the wallet, token and transaction requirements for the actual action you plan to take. Network-wide average figures are not a fee quote for that action.
  • Treat incentives as time-sensitive. A reward pool or quest described at launch does not establish that it is still open or that its terms are unchanged.
  • Separate technical claims from financial expectations. A blockchain integration, token or NFT does not establish future demand, resale value or investment returns.

What “revolutionizing” means in practice

Polygon’s clearest current gaming example is infrastructure paired with a discovery and engagement layer: Polygon PoS is the named network, while Immutable Play provides the hub described in the announcement. The broader promise is that blockchain systems can record game-related assets and, where developers build for it, potentially support movement across connected ecosystems. The limits are just as important: participation and portability are game-specific, directory entries and old announcements do not prove current availability, and network statistics do not establish gaming adoption or performance.
