It is a German fintech bank and securities broker supervised by German regulators. Customers can use it to buy shares, ETFs, bonds and other investments, although the exact products and protections depend on the country where the account is opened.
That does not mean every customer experience is perfect. Trade Republic’s app-first model, limited customer-service channels and occasional reports of delayed transfers or account restrictions may frustrate users. The more important distinction is that these service complaints are not evidence that Trade Republic itself is fraudulent. The main risks are investment losses, operational delays, phishing scams and misunderstanding how cash and securities protection work.
What is Trade Republic?
Trade Republic is a European digital investment platform headquartered in Germany. It operates through Trade Republic Bank GmbH and provides a mobile-app-based securities account rather than a traditional branch brokerage.
The platform is primarily designed for straightforward investing. Depending on the customer’s residence, it may offer:
#1 Best Overall
- Shares and exchange-traded funds
- Government and corporate bonds
- Recurring investment plans
- Interest on eligible uninvested cash
- Cryptocurrency services
- Card or payment features in some markets
Trade Republic is not principally a forex broker. It is also not a CFD broker offering leveraged currency trading. Anyone looking for high-leverage forex, short-term speculation or a MetaTrader account is looking at the wrong type of platform.
Is Trade Republic regulated?
Trade Republic Bank GmbH holds a German banking licence and is supervised by Germany’s Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) and the Deutsche Bundesbank. That is a materially different status from an unlicensed trading website that merely claims to be regulated.
Before opening an account, check the legal entity shown in the app’s documents and on the current Trade Republic website. Regulatory permissions can differ by country, and a company’s authorisation does not guarantee that an investment will make money.
Trade Republic’s regulated status means it must follow rules covering areas such as identity checks, anti-money-laundering controls, customer agreements and the handling of client assets. It does not eliminate the normal market risk of buying shares, ETFs, bonds or cryptoassets.

How customer money and investments are protected
Protection depends on what you own and where the money is held.

- As a day trader, you can live and work anywhere in the world. You can decide when to work and when not to work.
- You only answer to yourself. That is the life of the successful day trader. Many people aspire to it, but very few succeed. Day trading is not gambling or an online poker game.
- To be successful at day trading you need the right tools and you need to be motivated, to work hard, and to persevere.
| Asset or balance | What generally applies | What it does not protect against |
|---|---|---|
| Cash held with a partner bank | Eligible deposits are generally covered by statutory deposit protection up to €100,000 per customer per bank, subject to the applicable rules. | A fall in the value of shares, ETFs or crypto. |
| Shares, ETFs and bonds | Securities are normally held as customer assets rather than being treated as Trade Republic’s own money. If a broker fails, customers generally retain ownership, subject to the custody and insolvency process. | Market losses, a company going bankrupt or an ETF declining in value. |
| Cryptoassets | Crypto custody and legal treatment differ from ordinary securities and should be checked in the current customer agreement. | Price collapses, blockchain risks and every type of loss. |
Do not treat “protected” as meaning “risk-free.” Deposit insurance is not investment insurance. If an ETF falls 30%, deposit protection does not reimburse the loss. Similarly, holding a share through a regulated broker does not protect you from the share price declining.
Trade Republic fees
Trade Republic is known for a relatively simple fee structure, but the exact schedule can change and may vary by market. The current pricing page and order preview should be checked before placing a trade.
Common features of its pricing model have included no custody fee, free savings-plan executions and a fixed external settlement cost for individual trades. Other possible costs include:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- ETF or fund expenses charged within the investment itself
- Bid-ask spreads
- Foreign-exchange costs when buying assets in another currency
- Product-specific costs for bonds or derivatives
- Fees charged by exchanges or third parties
- Taxes and government charges
- Costs associated with card, transfer or crypto services
A “one-euro fee” or low headline commission is not the total cost of investing. For a small, recurring ETF investment, fund expenses and the spread may matter more than the order fee. For a large or less liquid order, execution price can also be important.
Is Trade Republic safe to use?
Trade Republic is a legitimate platform, but “safe” needs to be separated into three questions:
Rank #3
- Language: english
- Book - trading: technical analysis masterclass: master the financial markets
- It is made up of premium quality material.
- Is the company real and regulated? Yes. Trade Republic operates as a regulated German banking and investment business.
- Are investments guaranteed to make money? No. Shares, ETFs, bonds and crypto can lose value.
- Can the app or account process fail? Yes. Any financial app can experience outages, verification delays, transfer problems or account restrictions.
The platform’s app-only design can be a disadvantage during an urgent problem. Users who prefer telephone support, physical branches or a broad range of order types may find a traditional broker more suitable.
Common Trade Republic complaints
Complaints about a legitimate broker should not automatically be dismissed, but they should be interpreted correctly. Typical issues reported by users of app-based brokers can include:
- Slow responses from customer support
- Requests for additional identity or source-of-funds documents
- Delayed deposits or withdrawals
- Temporary account restrictions
- Difficulty transferring securities to another broker
- Confusion over interest payments, tax documents or fractional shares
- App outages during busy market periods
Financial firms are allowed, and sometimes required, to pause activity while checking identity, fraud indicators or payment ownership. That does not prove misconduct. However, a customer should keep transaction records and escalate an unresolved complaint through the firm’s formal complaints process rather than relying only on in-app chat.
How to avoid a Trade Republic impersonation scam
Scammers often copy the names, logos and websites of real brokers. A genuine company can therefore be used as the cover for a fake investment offer.
- Download the app through the official Apple App Store or Google Play listing, checking the developer carefully.
- Type the official web address into your browser instead of following an unsolicited social-media or messaging link.
- Never send money to a personal bank account, cryptocurrency wallet or “account manager.”
- Do not provide passwords, one-time authentication codes or screen access to someone claiming to be support.
- Be suspicious of guaranteed returns, “managed accounts,” urgent deposits and requests to pay a tax or release fee before withdrawal.
- Check the legal entity, regulator and customer agreement before transferring money.
Trade Republic will not turn a risky investment into a guaranteed-income product simply because its logo appears on a message or website.

Can Trade Republic lose my money?
The platform cannot prevent investments from falling in value. Shares, ETFs, bonds and crypto can all lose money. Broker insolvency protection and deposit insurance are not protection against ordinary investment losses.
Does Trade Republic offer forex trading?
Trade Republic is mainly a securities and investment platform, not a conventional leveraged forex broker. Product availability depends on the customer’s country and the current offering.
What should I do if I cannot withdraw money from Trade Republic?
Check whether the transfer has cleared, whether the destination account is in your name and whether the app requests identity or compliance documents. Save all records, contact official support and submit a formal complaint if the issue is not resolved. Never pay a third party to unlock an account.
The Bottom Line
Verdict: Trade Republic is legit, not a scam. Its German regulatory status and banking structure distinguish it from an anonymous or unauthorised trading website. It may be a reasonable low-cost option for straightforward, long-term investing, particularly through regular ETF contributions.
