Canada’s July 8, 2024, recall covered specific refrigerated Silk and Great Value plant-based beverages—not every product sold under either brand. If you have an older carton, compare its exact product name, package size, UPC, best-before date and product code with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s (CFIA) recall alert. Do not consume a matching product; CFIA advises discarding it or returning it to the place of purchase.
Which Silk and Great Value products were recalled?
The CFIA’s national recall alert, published July 8, 2024, listed 15 Silk refrigerated beverage products and three Great Value almond beverages. The Silk varieties included almond, coconut, oat, almond-cashew and almond-coconut beverages. Listed package sizes were 1.75 L or 1.89 L.
The recall was limited to the specific products and identifiers in the CFIA alert. It did not apply to every Silk or Great Value product. Danone Canada’s July 8 notice said its recall concerned selected Canadian refrigerated Silk products and identified several products outside the recall, including shelf-stable beverages, coffee creamers, plant-based foods, Silk Nextmilk refrigerated, Silk Unsweetened Almond 940 mL and Silk Oat Original 890 mL. Use the CFIA list—not a general brand name or an exclusion summary—as the controlling product check.
How to check whether your carton matches
- Open the CFIA recall alert. Use its product table to check the recalled products and identifiers.
- Match the exact product name and package size. A similar flavour or the same brand alone does not establish that a carton is recalled.
- Compare the UPC. The alert lists a UPC for each affected product; match the full number on your carton.
- Check the best-before date and product code. Most listed products have best-before dates up to and including October 4, 2024, and a product code containing 7825. Silk Coconut Unsweetened has a different best-before cutoff: September 27, 2024; its product code condition also includes 7825.
The date and code criteria do not replace the product-name, size and UPC check. Consult the alert’s exact row for your product rather than relying on the general criteria above.

What to do with a recalled product
- Do not drink or serve it. CFIA says to discard the product or return it to the place where you bought it.
- Do not rely on appearance or smell. Food contaminated with Listeria may not look or smell spoiled.
- Contact a healthcare provider if you think you became sick after consuming it. Do not use the recall notice to diagnose symptoms yourself.
CFIA lists possible listeriosis symptoms including vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. People at elevated risk of severe illness include those with weakened immune systems, adults over 60, and pregnant people and their unborn or newborn babies.
What the outbreak investigation found
In its final outbreak notice, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) reported 20 laboratory-confirmed cases linked to the outbreak: one in Alberta, 13 in Ontario, five in Quebec and one in Nova Scotia. Fifteen people were hospitalized and three died. Reported illness onsets ranged from August 2023 to mid-July 2024. PHAC said the outbreak appeared to be over and the investigation was closed.

CFIA’s October 29, 2024, investigation conclusion confirmed the outbreak strain in the implicated facility’s environment, but said investigators could not establish the primary contamination site. CFIA described post-processing cross-contamination as a possibility, not a proven route. The agency also reported deficiencies in environmental swabbing and finished-product testing and said production at the Pickering facility had been halted while cleanup, renovations and safety measures were pursued.

This was a 2024 recall with product-date cutoffs in 2024, and PHAC’s outbreak notice says the investigation is closed. The notice does not mean every beverage from either brand was affected. For any carton you are checking, the decisive step is still to match all of its identifiers against the CFIA alert; if they match, follow CFIA’s discard-or-return advice.
