The change is documented as a shift in manufacturing arrangements: Porsche Design’s history says the company established its own Swiss watchmaking structure in 2014. Official sources do not disclose the agreement’s terms or say that a dispute caused it to end.
When did Eterna stop producing Porsche Design watches?
The precise dates in Porsche Design’s 2026 fact sheet are 1996 through 2014. The brand’s Timepieces Collaboration Story describes Eterna as a major phase in the watches’ history, though it uses the broader phrase “late 1990s” for the partnership’s beginning. For the start date, the fact sheet supplies the more specific timeline.
That period identifies a production era, not necessarily the date a particular watch was designed, sold, or serviced. A watch made during those years should be assessed by its model and reference, movement, condition, provenance, and service history.
What changed after the Eterna production period?
Porsche Design’s history describes the founding of Porsche Design Timepieces AG in Switzerland in 2014 as a move toward an independent manufacturing structure. It is best understood as a transition in how Porsche Design organized watch production—not as evidence of a public falling-out. The available official sources do not explain why the Eterna arrangement ended or disclose its commercial terms.

In June 2024, Porsche Design announced the purchase of a building in Grenchen, Switzerland, for a new manufactory. The company said the site would bring together product development, quality management, after-sales service, logistics, and production. Its June 2024 announcement also described the earlier decision to manufacture watches in Solothurn.
How does the Grenchen manufactory fit into the timeline?
| Year or period | Event |
|---|---|
| 1995 | F. A. P. Beteiligungen GmbH acquired the building later used for the Grenchen manufactory, according to Porsche Design’s 2026 fact sheet. |
| 1996–2014 | Porsche Design Timepieces were produced under license from Eterna, according to the same fact sheet. |
| 2014 | Porsche Design’s history dates the founding of Porsche Design Timepieces AG in Switzerland to this year. |
| 2020 | Porsche Design says it began looking for a new manufactory location because Solothurn’s capacity would not be sufficient for the long term and expansion there was not possible. |
| May 2024 | Porsche Design announced that it had purchased the Grenchen building for a new manufactory. |
| Fall 2025 | The company says it relocated from Solothurn and began production at Grenchen. |
| March 19, 2026 | Porsche Design officially opened the Grenchen manufactory. |
The Grenchen building has a connection to Eterna beyond the earlier production relationship: Porsche Design says it was built in 1955 and formerly served as Eterna’s headquarters. The company’s March 2026 fact sheet, “A New Time”, describes the new site and its history.

- Challenge Watch Prize Winner of the 2021 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève - The GPHG has long been acclaimed as the watchmaking industry's highest honor. It's an annual competition involving several hundreds of watches marketed during the year.
- The World on Your Wrist - Inspired by "Blue Marble" the first photograph of Earth as a whole taken from space in 1972. Micro-engraved the earth's terrain on the dial, showing natural elements such as land, mountains and oceans. Unique single pointer design, indicating the time in a way that simulates the rotation of the earth. Means to awaken people's awareness of protecting the earth's environment.
- Innovative Time Telling - When the hour hand rotates 30°, the minute hand rotates 390°. This innovative change in the gear ratio of the traditional movement means the watch can indicate both the hour and minute with a single pointer. This ingenious solution transforms the conventional way of time-telling.
- Fine Craftsmanship - Using titanium material which is 30% lighter and 40% harder than stainless steel. The sleek oval case design without lugs commands attention and is comfortable to wear. The tightly sealed crown ensures added protection against the elements and smooth winding. Fluoro-rubber strap, which is unaffected by temperatures and resistant to abrasions and corrosion. Unlike silicone strap, it stays clean and keeps dust particles away.
- 3ATM Water Resistant - Suitable for daily use. Splash/rain resistant. Not available for showering, bathing, swimming, snorkelling, diving, fishing, and water related works.
What is known about the new facility?
Porsche Design’s 2026 fact sheet reports a total site area of 3,600 m², including 1,700 m² for production and logistics and 450 m² for customer experience and exhibitions. It lists 10 watchmaker workstations and a production capacity of up to 10,000 units annually. That is stated capacity, not a report of actual yearly output.
The same fact sheet lists 211 solar panels with a peak output of 134 kW and states an energy self-sufficiency rate of 62.3%. These are company-reported facility figures, not measures of production volume or watch quality.

What should buyers know about Eterna-era watches?
Watches from the 1996–2014 production period are a distinct historical category, but the production dates alone do not establish the value or present condition of an individual example. Porsche Design’s official history documents the manufacturing eras and product development; it does not verify used-market prices or the condition of specific watches.
- Confirm the exact model and reference, and check whether the movement and materials match reliable documentation for that reference.
- Review the watch’s condition, provenance, and service history rather than relying only on its production era or dial signature.
- Ask a qualified watchmaker about servicing and replacement-part availability for the specific model.
The consulted official sources do not establish current availability, seller reliability, or resale value for Eterna-era watches. Those details must be checked for the individual listing and watch.
