USDA’s Latest Acreage Report: What Changed in the 2025 Estimates

USDA’s latest annual Acreage report lists a higher 2025 corn planted-acreage figure than the initial June 2025 estimate. Here’s how to distinguish that update from 2026 crop comparisons.

The latest USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) annual Acreage report available as of October 7, 2026, was released June 30, 2026. Its comparison table lists 2025 U.S. corn planted acreage at 98.788 million acres, versus the 95.2 million acres USDA initially estimated in June 2025—a difference of 3.588 million acres. The newer report also estimates 2026 corn acreage; its year-over-year comparisons should not be mistaken for revisions to 2025.

What the latest USDA acreage report says about 2025

USDA NASS publishes its annual Acreage report alongside its crop statistics. The National Agricultural Library’s publication archive identifies the June 30, 2026 release as the latest available as of October 7, 2026. The report covers planted and/or harvested acreage for many crops, with national and state figures. Read the June 30, 2026 USDA NASS report; check the USDA National Agricultural Library archive.

The clearest documented 2025 update is for corn. USDA’s June 2025 report initially estimated 95.2 million U.S. acres planted to corn. In the June 2026 report, the comparison table lists 98.788 million acres for 2025. The later figure is 3.588 million acres higher than the initial published estimate. These are values from two different report dates, not a claim that 98.788 million acres was the final harvested area.

Initial 2025 estimates and later year-over-year comparisons

The June 2025 release provided initial planted-acreage estimates for several major crops. The June 2026 release’s up-or-down statements compare its 2026 estimates with 2025; they do not, on their own, state exact revised 2025 acreage for each crop.

How to read the corn figures without mixing estimates

The 2025 revision comparison

The 95.2-million-acre figure is the estimate published in June 2025. The 98.788-million-acre figure is the 2025 value shown in the June 2026 comparison table. Subtracting the first from the second gives 3.588 million acres. This comparison describes how the reported 2025 value changed between publications.

The separate 2026 estimate

The June 2026 report gives 95.343 million acres as its estimate of corn planted in 2026 (rounded to 95.3 million in the headline). Its “down 3 percent from 2025” statement compares that 2026 estimate with the 2025 figure in the same report. It is not another way of describing the 2025 revision.

Planted acreage is not harvested acreage

These figures refer to acreage planted, not the area ultimately harvested for grain. The annual report also publishes harvested-area data for crops where applicable. Keep the measure and the reporting year aligned when using a table or comparing figures.

Why acreage estimates can change

The June 2025 estimate followed the March Prospective Plantings report, which concerns farmers’ planting intentions. For its June estimate, NASS surveyed approximately 67,700 farm operators during the first two weeks of June to gather information about what had actually been planted. An estimate based on a mid-year survey can differ from a later comparison value as acreage information is updated.

NASS also reports historical reliability measures. For the June 2025 corn planted-acreage estimate, its 20-year historical data showed a 2.1% 90% confidence interval and an average difference of 891,000 acres between mid-year and final estimates. In that comparison period, the mid-year corn estimate was below the final estimate six times and above it 14 times. NASS cautions that this history does not establish whether the current estimate will be above or below its eventual final value. These are historical reliability statistics, not an adjustment to apply mechanically to the 2025 figures.
