PowerObjects specialized in Microsoft Dynamics CRM services; HCL said the deal would expand its application-services capabilities and strengthen its relationship with Microsoft.
How much did HCL pay for PowerObjects?
HCL announced approximately $46 million in cash consideration, including contingent payments subject to financial milestones. That was the consideration stated in the October 2015 announcement, not an independently calculated final closing price. HCL later reported that it had completed the acquisition in its Q2 FY2016 investor release.
At announcement, PowerObjects had approximately $37 million in trailing 12-month revenue as of September 30, 2015, and more than 250 employees were to join HCL. These are historical figures for the target at the time of the deal, not current operating or staffing data. HCL’s acquisition announcement and its FY2015–16 annual report describe the transaction.
What did PowerObjects do?
PowerObjects was an enterprise services provider focused on Microsoft Dynamics CRM, not a consumer hardware maker. Its offerings included implementation and other services, support, education, and add-ons for the CRM platform. HCL described the Minneapolis-based company as a leading North American provider.

Why did HCL buy PowerObjects?
HCL presented the acquisition as a way to combine PowerObjects’ specialist Dynamics CRM expertise with HCL’s broader applications business and delivery capabilities. It also said the deal would deepen its relationship with Microsoft and support its cloud and digital-business strategy.
The strategic fit had three connected dimensions:
- Specialist capability: PowerObjects brought focused Dynamics CRM services and associated support and education.
- HCL’s services scale: HCL said the addition would bolster its global applications business.
- Microsoft alignment: HCL sought to strengthen its relationship with Microsoft through a larger Dynamics practice.
In the acquisition announcement, HCL executive vice president and global head of application services Greg Palesano said: “Together, HCL and PowerObjects will now offer one of the largest Microsoft Dynamics practices in North America.” Microsoft corporate vice president Susan Hauser said the companies were “well positioned to help drive business transformation by helping companies intelligently engage with their customers.” PowerObjects CEO Dean Jones said: “We are excited that HCL will carry on the PowerObjects heritage of innovation.” These were statements by company and partner representatives at the time of the announcement.

What market context did HCL cite in 2015?
HCL’s announcement used growth figures to explain the timing of the deal. It cited Gartner for 13.3% CRM market growth in 2014 and a forecast that the worldwide CRM market would reach $36 billion by 2017; it also reported Microsoft Dynamics CRM growth of 21.7% in 2014. These are historical figures and a forecast as presented in HCL’s 2015 announcement, not current market measurements. The $36 billion figure was a forecast, not a verified outcome in the cited materials. HCL’s announcement is the source for these numbers.

The transaction establishes HCL’s stated consideration, the target’s business focus and scale at announcement, and the buyer’s strategic rationale in 2015.
