Here is a selected month-by-month list of chief information security officer appointments and related security leadership moves reported during 2023. It includes corporate, nonprofit, university and government roles, but it is a news roundup—not a complete or verified count of every appointment worldwide. Titles matter: some entries are deputy, advisory, government-director, chief-security-officer or physical-security roles rather than conventional corporate CISO posts.

January: Prove Identity

Amanda Fennell — CISO and CIO

Prove Identity’s January 26 announcement named Amanda Fennell both chief information security officer and chief information officer. The roundup says she would oversee security operations and had held security leadership roles at Relativity and other organizations. Prove Identity’s announcement.

March: JetBlue

Keith Anderson — CISO

JetBlue announced Keith Anderson’s appointment on March 1. The airline said he would oversee its information security program. The roundup notes his prior security leadership experience at Warner Bros. Discovery, AT&T, Goldman Sachs and Citi. JetBlue’s announcement.

June: GitLab and Brown & Brown

Josh Lemos — GitLab CISO

GitLab announced Josh Lemos as its chief information security officer on June 13. The company assigned him responsibility for global security strategy, compliance initiatives and strengthening the security of its platform. GitLab described him as having over 20 years of experience leading information security programs and teams. GitLab’s announcement.

Barry Hensley and Rob Burch — Brown & Brown

Brown & Brown announced two different appointments on June 1: Barry Hensley as chief security officer and Rob Burch as chief information security officer. Hensley’s title should not be conflated with Burch’s CISO role. Brown & Brown’s announcement.

July: Fastly and Reddit

Marshall Erwin — Fastly CISO

Fastly announced Marshall Erwin as chief information security officer on July 31. Its announcement identifies him as Mozilla’s former chief security officer. Fastly’s announcement.

Fredrick “Flee” Lee — Reddit CISO

The roundup names Fredrick “Flee” Lee as Reddit’s CISO. It describes his remit as including the privacy and security teams and information security, privacy and compliance risks. Lee said: “As Reddit grows, it is crucial that our security and trust systems remain resilient and agile to adapt to the ever-evolving threat landscape.”

September: Bishop Fox

Christie Terrill — first CISO

Bishop Fox announced leadership additions on September 19, including Christie Terrill as its first chief information security officer. The “first CISO” distinction marks the creation of that post at the company, rather than a routine replacement appointment. Bishop Fox’s announcement.

December: FS-ISAC

John Denning — CISO

The roundup reports that John Denning, a former Bank of America security leader, was appointed chief information security officer of FS-ISAC, a nonprofit organization serving the financial sector.

Other roles in the roundup that are not conventional corporate CISO appointments

The 2023 list also includes security leadership positions whose titles or remit differ from a standard corporate CISO role. Read the title precisely when using the roundup as a reference:

  • Zoom’s Nathan Mills was described as head of global security, with a physical-security subtitle; this is not presented as a conventional CISO appointment.
  • Patrice Wilmot was named deputy CISO at the IRS, a US federal agency.
  • Petri Kuivala was described as a CISO advisor at Hoxhunt, an advisory role rather than a company CISO appointment.
  • Barry Hensley’s Brown & Brown appointment was chief security officer; Rob Burch was the company’s CISO.
  • Anne Keast-Butler was appointed director of GCHQ, a government intelligence agency role, not a corporate CISO position.

How to interpret the 2023 list

CSO Online’s roundup is useful for identifying selected appointments across sectors and months, but it does not establish the total number or rate of CISO appointments in 2023. The published material does not support treating its entries as a global census or calculating an industry-wide appointment statistic from the list. For individual role scope and dates, the linked company announcements provide primary confirmation where available.
