Ultra-Rare Steam Deck Prototype With Vega GPU Reportedly Sold for $2,000 on eBay

Valve engineering sample 34 reportedly sold for $2,000 after a $2,999.99 eBay listing. The Picasso/Vega prototype had a rounder shell, circular touchpads and experimental software, but its chain of custody remains unknown.

A Valve Steam Deck engineering sample labeled Engineering Sample 34 was listed on eBay for $2,999.99 and reportedly sold for $2,000 on April 8, 2025. Its hardware appears genuine, but the unit’s chain of custody is unknown, so the transaction is best treated as a reported collector sale rather than a fully verified auction record.

What sold, and for how much?

The listing identified the handheld as a Valve engineering sample and showed a rear badge reading “not for resale.” The asking price was $2,999.99; coverage reported a completed sale at $2,000 on April 8, 2025. The original eBay page later became difficult to access.

That price reflects rarity and development history, not a normal used-console valuation. Because the seller’s provenance documentation and chain of custody are not established publicly, buyers should not assume every similarly labeled prototype is authentic or worth the same amount.

Is Engineering Sample 34 a real Steam Deck prototype?

Several details support the identification. PCWorld noted that the shell shape and control layout matched prototype imagery Valve had shown publicly, and Valve’s press materials include prototype images. Those similarities are meaningful, but an eBay listing by itself does not independently prove where a device came from or whether it passed through Valve’s hands lawfully.

Valve Steam Deck OLED 1TB Handheld Gaming Console

  • Carrying case with removable liner

The strongest defensible description is therefore “a reported Valve Steam Deck engineering sample.” It should not be presented as a retail Steam Deck or as an item with documented corporate provenance.

What GPU and processor did it use?

BIOS images associated with the unit identified an unnamed AMD Picasso APU. Picasso was an AMD Ryzen 3000-era design using up to four Zen+ CPU cores with integrated Vega graphics based on AMD’s GCN 5.0 architecture. Reports described the sample as having 8GB of memory and 256GB of storage.

Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais characterized the Picasso graphics capability as “about half of the GPU power of the final Deck.” That is an attributed engineering comparison, not a standardized benchmark between identical software builds. A June 2025 teardown by Bringus Studios, reported by Tom’s Hardware, described a Ryzen 7 3700U-class Picasso configuration and emphasized that experimental drivers and software could make actual game performance worse than a simple half-power estimate suggests.

How the prototype differs from the retail Steam Deck

Area Engineering Sample 34 Retail Steam Deck
Compute platform AMD Picasso-era Zen+ CPU with Vega integrated graphics Later Steam Deck platform; the available comparison does not establish a directly equivalent retail specification
Memory and storage Reported 8GB of memory and 256GB of storage Retail configurations offered more memory; exact comparison capacity is not stated in the available evidence
Touchpads Circular touchpads Different touchpad design used on the production model
Controls Smaller sticks and blue-accented buttons Production control layout and dimensions
Shell Rounder body with different vent placement Production shell geometry and ventilation arrangement
Software and drivers Experimental software and drivers were reported Retail SteamOS and production support software

Why Valve made these design experiments

The physical differences document decisions Valve was still testing: touchpad geometry, stick size, shell curvature, vent location and grip comfort. Griffais said the flatter ergonomic design was “an interesting experiment” that taught the team a great deal about comfort.

Valve’s own development booklet describes testing control placement and grip comfort across many hand sizes and iterating through numerous prototypes. Engineering Sample 34 is valuable because it captures that process rather than because its older hardware is desirable for modern gaming.

What collectors should check before paying prototype prices

  • Identity: Photograph the rear “not for resale” marking, serial or engineering label and every board identifier.
  • Provenance: Request original purchase records, custody history and evidence connecting the seller to Valve or an authorized recipient.
  • Hardware match: Compare BIOS details, APU markings, memory, storage and board photographs with independent teardown reporting.
  • Function: Verify that the unit boots, charges, displays an image and records its BIOS version; prototype drivers may prevent reliable game testing.
  • Compatibility: Do not assume retail Steam Deck cases, attachments, replacement parts or repair guides fit this shell. Valve documents repairability and iFixit collaboration for retail products, but compatibility with Engineering Sample 34 is not established.
  • Transaction risk: Use payment protection, preserve the complete listing and communications, and treat a high price without documentation as speculation.

What the $2,000 sale means

The reported transaction establishes a notable data point for an exceptionally rare Valve development unit: $2,000 paid after a $2,999.99 listing price. It does not establish a standard market price. Rarity, visible differences from the retail Deck and a credible technical history can attract collectors, while uncertain provenance, immature software and unknown repairability can materially reduce what a rational buyer should pay.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

For ordinary Steam Deck owners, the prototype is primarily a record of Valve’s design process. Its Picasso/Vega hardware is older and its experimental software makes it a poor performance benchmark for a production Deck.
