Meta has laid off employees from teams associated with WhatsApp and Instagram, but that refers to targeted cuts reported in 2024. The company’s much larger 2026 reduction—about 8,000 jobs, or 10% of its global workforce—was a broader restructuring, not a separate announcement focused on those two apps. The first wave was scheduled to begin May 20, 2026.
What Meta announced—and when
The headline combines separate rounds of workforce changes. Here is the timeline, with layoffs distinguished from other changes:

The historical figures belong to different restructuring cycles and should not be added together as though they were one announcement. Likewise, moving employees into new work is not the same as eliminating their jobs.
Were WhatsApp and Instagram divisions specifically targeted?
The 2024 reporting identified teams associated with both products among those affected, but it did not establish that every team within either product was cut. Nor is there a public breakdown in the cited reporting showing how many WhatsApp or Instagram employees were included in the 2026 figure of about 8,000.

Meta’s financial reporting groups Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp within its Family of Apps segment; it does not report Instagram and WhatsApp as standalone company segments. Reality Labs is reported separately. Meta’s 2025 results reported 78,865 employees as of December 31, 2025.
That structure helps explain why a job may be described as connected to an app without a public count for that app. Employees can also support infrastructure or operations used by several Meta products.

How the 2026 restructuring relates to AI
Meta’s 2026 changes involved both job cuts and a shift in where the company wanted people and resources. Reporting on an internal restructuring document said about 7,000 employees were being moved to AI-related initiatives, alongside changes to management layers and work organized around AI workflows. Investing.com report.
Meta’s 2025 results described rising infrastructure costs and compensation growth partly driven by hiring technical talent for priority areas, especially AI. The company’s results provide that financial context. Zuckerberg also attributed the planned cuts partly to increased AI capital spending, while describing the cuts as separate from the shift to an “AI-native” organization. Investing.com report.

These facts support describing the restructuring as AI-related; they do not show that AI directly replaced specific WhatsApp or Instagram teams. The reported transfer of employees to AI work was a reassignment, not 7,000 additional layoffs.
What the changes mean for users
The cited reports do not indicate that WhatsApp or Instagram is being shut down, spun off or materially withdrawn from consumers. They also do not confirm that particular features or user-support services were canceled because of these job cuts.

Workforce changes can affect product priorities, development schedules or internal support, and Meta’s AI focus could bring more AI features to its services. Those are possible indirect effects, not confirmed outcomes of the reported layoffs.

Are more Meta layoffs expected in 2026?
Before the May round, Reuters-based reporting said Meta was planning additional cuts later in 2026, though their timing and scale were not finalized at that point. After the May cuts, Zuckerberg reportedly told employees he did not expect more company-wide layoffs during 2026. MarketScreener report. That statement is narrower than a promise that no team or location will undergo further changes.
