Is the iPhone App Gold Rush Over? What the Numbers Say in 2026

App spending is still rising, but publishing alone is no longer a growth strategy. Here’s what the latest figures can—and can’t—tell you about building an iPhone app business.

Yes, if “gold rush” means easy growth from simply publishing an iPhone app. No, if it means there is no money left to be made. The app market is mature, but spending continues to grow. The opportunity has shifted from getting an app into the store to earning discovery, repeat use, and revenue. Industry totals show the market’s scale—not the odds that a new app will succeed.

Are apps still making money?

Yes, though the strongest recent growth is in spending rather than downloads. Sensor Tower estimates that global in-app purchase (IAP) revenue across iOS and Google Play reached $167 billion in 2025, up 10.6% year over year. Downloads across both stores rose 0.8% to nearly 150 billion, and time spent in apps reached 5.3 trillion hours, up 3.8%. These are estimates for both mobile platforms, not iPhone-only figures. Sensor Tower’s 2026 State of Mobile describes the market as mature but not stagnant, with growth shifting toward monetization.

One sign of that shift: IAP revenue from non-gaming apps surpassed games for the first time in 2025, according to Sensor Tower. That does not mean every category or business model is growing equally; it does show that app revenue is not limited to games.

What does Apple’s $1.4 trillion figure actually measure?

Apple reported that the App Store ecosystem facilitated more than $1.4 trillion in developer billings and sales in 2025. The estimate, published in 2026, draws on a study by economists at Analysis Group. Apple’s breakdown is:

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Category Apple-reported 2025 amount What it represents
Physical goods and services $1.1 trillion Commerce facilitated through apps, such as goods or services purchased from businesses
Digital goods and services $149 billion Digital sales associated with the ecosystem
Developer in-app advertising revenue $151 billion Advertising revenue earned by developers within apps

These categories are not the same as App Store revenue or the money a typical app developer keeps. Much of the total is commerce facilitated through apps, and Apple says more than 90% of the ecosystem total involved no commission paid to Apple. Apple also reported more than 850 million average weekly App Store users across 175 countries and regions in 2025. Those figures describe ecosystem scale, not a new app’s likely customer base or income. Apple’s announcement presents the figures and its methodology.

Is the App Store too crowded for a new app?

There is no market-wide statistic here that can answer whether a particular idea can break through. The modest 0.8% download increase across iOS and Google Play in 2025 suggests a more mature market than one expanding mainly through new adoption. Meanwhile, spending grew faster. For a founder, that makes the practical question less “Can I publish?” and more “Can the right people find this, and will they keep using it?” That is a planning inference from aggregate trends, not a guarantee about an individual app.

Before committing substantial time or money, assess the idea against the factors that determine its economics:

  • Audience and geography: Define who has the problem, where they live, and how competitive that market is. Distribution options and rules can differ by region.
  • Revenue model: Separate paid downloads and IAP from subscriptions and advertising. Commerce facilitated by an app is another category; it should not be confused with app-store revenue.
  • Discovery and retention: Identify a credible route to reach users and a reason for them to return. A download is not the same as an active, paying customer.
  • Platform costs and control: Compare applicable fees, payment choices, and distribution routes for the relevant country and date.
  • Evidence quality: An industry estimate, a platform’s ecosystem announcement, and a study of a defined developer group answer different questions. None is a forecast for your app.

Does AI make an app a better business?

AI is a market signal, not a proven shortcut to app success. Apple reported that more than 40 of its top 100 App Store apps featured consumer-facing AI capabilities in 2025, and that those apps had four times more billing growth than the other apps in the top 100. That is Apple’s comparison of a selected group; it does not establish that adding AI caused the growth or that a new app would see the same result. An AI feature is commercially meaningful only if it solves a user problem well enough to support discovery, retention, or payment.

How do App Store fees and distribution rules affect the opportunity?

Platform economics vary by territory. In the European Union, Apple’s developer documentation describes options introduced since 2024 that include alternative payment processing, alternative app marketplaces, and web distribution. The terms are complex and eligibility-dependent. Apple’s support page says the agreement was updated August 18, 2026, with the main terms effective October 1, 2026. It lists a 26% commission for Apple in-app purchases, with 15% for specified program participants and subscriptions after their first year; 20% for alternative in-app payment processing, with 10% for specified cases; and a 5% Core Technology Commission on specified digital transactions through alternative marketplaces or web distribution. These are EU-specific terms, not a global iPhone fee. Review Apple’s current EU terms for the applicable distribution route before making a financial decision.

A November 2025 paper by Jane Choi, Ph.D., examined approximately 21,000 EU App Store products whose developers adopted Apple’s alternative business terms between March and September 2024. Comparing three months before and three months after enrollment, it analyzed more than 41 million transactions. The paper reports that commissions typically fell by about 10 percentage points and that prices stayed the same or increased on 91% of products. Apple supported the study. It covers that cohort and period—not prices on the web or other marketplaces, and not every developer’s likely costs or pricing response. Apple’s ecosystem announcement links the study context.

Can market growth tell you whether an independent app will pay?

No. The figures available do not establish median app profits, the share of independent developers who make a living, or the success rate for new iPhone apps. Aggregate IAP revenue and ecosystem sales can rise while many individual apps earn little or nothing. Treat market totals as context for the size and direction of the business, not as an income forecast or a basis for spending money you cannot afford to lose.
