How AIOps Can Reduce Costs and Improve Operational Efficiency

AIOps can lower IT operating costs by speeding incident response, reducing manual triage, and improving resource use—but savings depend on data, workflow fit, and measured results.

AIOps can reduce operating costs when it helps IT teams resolve incidents faster, spend less time on manual triage, prevent costly disruption, or match cloud resources more closely to demand. It does not guarantee savings: outcomes depend on the use case, data quality, integration with existing workflows, skills, and the cost of deploying and running the system.

Where AIOps can create economic value

AIOps applies techniques such as machine learning and natural language processing to operational data and workflows. It can help teams detect unusual behavior, correlate related events, identify likely causes, and respond to problems. The financial benefit comes from changing the work and its consequences—not from using AI by itself.

Less time spent investigating incidents

When alerts from infrastructure, applications, and cloud services are correlated, teams may spend fewer staff hours sorting through noise and tracing recurring problems. That can free engineers for planned work, though the value is real only if saved time is put to productive use rather than assumed to be a cash saving.

Faster recovery and less disruption

Finding likely causes sooner can shorten service interruptions. Reduced downtime may lower the cost of lost transactions, delayed work, or service-level penalties, and may protect customer-facing services. The financial impact depends on how critical the affected service is and what an interruption costs that organization.

More efficient cloud and infrastructure use

Operational tools can help teams identify unused or oversized resources and adjust capacity to workload needs. This may reduce cloud or infrastructure spending, but automated changes need guardrails: cutting capacity too far can harm performance or availability and erase the savings.

What published results do—and do not—show

Reported outcomes vary by organization, use case, and study method. Vendor case studies, commissioned research, and independent surveys measure different things; their figures should not be treated as a forecast for a new deployment.

Gartner survey of 782 infrastructure and operations leaders, conducted November–December 2025 and reported in 2026 28% of AI use cases fully succeeded and met ROI expectations; 20% failed outright. These are survey findings about I&O AI use cases broadly, not a success rate specific to AIOps. Gartner also reported that among leaders who faced setbacks, 38% cited persistent skills gaps as a hindrance and 38% cited poor data quality or limited availability as a direct cause of failure. Gartner’s survey announcement.
IBM-reported ExaVault customer example 56.6% reduction in mean time to resolution (MTTR). An individual customer example, not a general AIOps benchmark. IBM’s AIOps benefits overview.
Forrester study commissioned by IBM, summarized by IBM 50% reduction in MTTR; 15% increase in availability for revenue-generating applications; 50% reduction in incidents; and elimination of 80% of the time spent remediating false-positive incidents. These figures belong to the commissioned study’s context and should not be assumed for another organization. IBM’s study summary.
IDC study sponsored by IBM, March 2024 $34.4 million average annual benefit and 419% three-year ROI; the snapshot also reports $6.6 million average annual benefit per 100 applications and a 7.7-month payback period. The study interviewed organizations using application performance monitoring or hybrid cloud cost-optimization tools. Benefits combined staff productivity, reduced downtime, IT cost, and business enablement; this is not a generic AIOps deployment estimate. IDC’s sponsored study.

How to assess whether an AIOps project will pay off

Start with a recurring operational problem, not a broad goal to “use AI.” Choose a bounded pilot where the cost of the current process and the desired improvement can be measured. For example, a team might target repeated incidents that generate large amounts of duplicate alert triage.

  • Incident volume and recurring incident rate.
  • Time to detect and time to resolve incidents.
  • Staff hours spent on alert triage, investigation, and remediation.
  • Downtime cost or service impact for the systems in scope.
  • Cloud or infrastructure utilization and spending for those workloads.
  • The full operating cost of the platform and pilot.

Count the costs as well as the savings

Include implementation and ongoing expenses: integrations, data engineering, training, governance, monitoring, and any added platform charges. Compare these with measurable reductions in labor, incident impact, or resource spend. A productivity improvement is not automatically a budget reduction; the organization must decide how it will use the capacity released.

Check the fit with existing work

Before expanding a pilot, confirm that the system can access usable data across the relevant infrastructure, cloud, applications, and logs, and connect to the team’s incident-management workflow. Assess whether its anomaly detection, event correlation, and root-cause suggestions are useful for the incidents the team actually handles. Decide which actions may run automatically and which require human approval, especially for changes that could affect production capacity or availability.

Gartner’s 2026 survey connects outcomes with integration into existing systems and workflows, executive backing, cross-functional collaboration, skills, and data quality. Those conditions affect whether teams can trust and use the output; they are part of the business case, not peripheral implementation details.

When the economics are strongest—and when to be cautious

AIOps is a stronger candidate when a team has a measurable, repeated operational burden, enough reliable data to analyze it, and a clear route from detection to action. It is less compelling when incidents are rare, data is fragmented or unreliable, no team owns the workflow, or the cost of integration and oversight exceeds the likely benefit.

Data-center energy use is sometimes cited in discussions of operational efficiency. IBM estimates data centers account for 1–1.5% of global electricity use, but this is an estimate of sector-wide energy context, not evidence that AIOps itself achieves a particular energy or cost reduction.
