Those measures reduce risk, but they cannot prevent every account takeover: your password, email, phone, devices, and recovery choices still matter. For most shoppers, enabling two-step verification and using a unique password are practical first steps.
What user data does Amazon protect?
Depending on the service, region, device, and account, Amazon may handle information such as your name and contact details, shipping and billing addresses, orders, payment and transaction information, login and account-security details, device identifiers, searches and browsing activity, customer-service communications, and—in some services—voice or location information. Amazon services do not all collect or retain the same categories. The applicable privacy notice and device settings are the better guides for a particular service.
“Protecting data” has several parts: confidentiality means limiting unauthorized access; integrity means preventing unauthorized changes; availability means keeping accounts and services usable; and privacy governance concerns why data is collected, how it is used or shared, and how long it is retained. Security does not by itself mean data is minimized or never used for service operation, personalization, or fraud prevention. Amazon’s public privacy page says it does not sell customers’ personal data, but that is not the same as saying it never processes or shares information in other circumstances. Amazon’s privacy and public-policy page explains its stated position and privacy controls.
How Amazon’s main security protections work
Encrypted connections
Amazon says it uses encryption protocols and software to protect information sent to and from its websites, apps, products, and services. Encryption in transit helps protect data while it moves between a device and a service. It is different from encryption at rest, which protects stored data, and from account controls such as authentication and authorization. A secure connection does not establish that information is encrypted end to end or inaccessible to the service after it arrives. Amazon Pay describes secure HTTPS connections using TLS/SSL; AWS documentation separately describes transport protections for relevant AWS services. Amazon Pay security guidance and AWS IAM data-protection guidance discuss these controls.

- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Payment-card safeguards
Amazon says it follows the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) when handling credit-card data. PCI DSS concerns security practices for payment-card information; it is not a promise that an account cannot be taken over or that unauthorized transactions will never occur. A person who gains access to an account may be able to view order details, change delivery information, or attempt purchases, subject to the service’s checks and account controls. Amazon Pay also describes verification and payment-security processes for its service. AWS’s privacy notice, Amazon’s privacy notice, and Amazon Pay’s transaction guidance describe relevant protections.
Identity checks and fraud prevention
Amazon’s privacy disclosures say it uses personal information to prevent and detect fraud and abuse and to protect Amazon, customers, and others. The disclosures also describe security procedures that may require proof of identity before personal information is disclosed. These checks can make impersonation harder, but may add friction or delay legitimate account recovery if you lose access to a phone, email address, or device. They do not necessarily mean Amazon requires government-issued ID for every account action.

Amazon does not publish every internal detection rule or threshold in the cited material. It is reasonable to understand fraud prevention as a combination of checks around account access, transactions, and recovery, but no specific signal or automated system should be assumed to catch every suspicious event. A security prompt is not, by itself, proof that an account has been compromised.
Privacy and device controls
Amazon describes physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards and provides account and device controls for some information, communications, cookies, and privacy choices. Alexa, Echo, Fire, Kindle, and other devices have different features depending on model, software, and location. Where available, users can review voice-history or privacy settings, use physical microphone controls, set screen locks or PINs, and manage household or child profiles. Consult the settings for the specific device rather than assuming that every device has the same controls or defaults. Amazon’s privacy page and its privacy and customer-trust overview describe its stated approach.

Two-step verification: an important account safeguard
Amazon’s two-step verification (2SV), also called multi-factor authentication (MFA), asks for a password and an additional verification factor. A stolen password alone may then be insufficient to sign in. It does not stop phishing that tricks someone into handing over both credentials, nor does it protect a compromised email account or device.
| Method | Practical advantage | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| SMS code | Convenient and does not require an authenticator app. | Depends on the phone number and carrier; SIM swaps, number recycling, and delivery delays can create risk or lockout. |
| Authenticator app | Generates codes without relying on SMS delivery. | Requires a plan for device loss or replacement; protect backup and recovery methods. |
| Password only | Fewest login steps. | A stolen or reused password may be enough for account access. |
Amazon’s documented account path is Account & Lists → Your Account → Login & security → Advanced Security Settings → Edit → Get Started. To add an authenticator app, Amazon’s instructions also describe Login & security → Two-Step Verification (2SV) Settings → Edit → Get Started or Add new phone or Authenticator App, then selecting Authenticator App. Labels can vary by marketplace, account type, and interface version. See Amazon’s account security instructions and Amazon’s 2SV and recovery guidance.

Keep recovery details current and do not share one-time codes with callers, texts, or emails claiming to be support. If a code does not arrive, check the registered number, connectivity, delivery method, and carrier delays; request a new code where offered or use an available authenticator method. Do not remove an authenticator app before transferring its accounts and confirming recovery access. If locked out, use Amazon’s official account-recovery route rather than repeatedly guessing credentials or calling numbers found in search results.
What Amazon’s security measures cannot guarantee
Strong platform controls cannot fully offset risks outside the platform. Common routes to account compromise include phishing, reused passwords exposed in another breach, SIM-swap attacks, a compromised email account used for password resets, malware or malicious browser extensions, shared devices left signed in, old recovery numbers, and customer-service impersonation. A user may also be exposed through a third-party seller or application, depending on what information is shared and how that service is secured.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a cloud platform for organizations and developers; its security controls do not automatically secure an Amazon retail account or a customer’s cloud workload. AWS provides tools and infrastructure protections, while customers configure and operate many controls for their own identities, applications, and data. This is the shared-responsibility model.
| Area | AWS offers or recommends | Customer responsibility |
|---|---|---|
| Identity and access | Identity and access management tools, including IAM and IAM Identity Center, and support for MFA. | Use individual identities, MFA, least privilege, and regular permission review; avoid routine use of root credentials. |
| Encryption | Encryption and key-management options, with transport encryption for relevant services. | Choose appropriate service settings and key policies; encryption behavior and defaults vary by service. |
| Logging and detection | CloudTrail for API and user-activity logging, plus services such as GuardDuty, Security Hub, and Macie. | Enable relevant coverage, protect and retain logs, monitor findings, and investigate and remediate alerts. |
| Workloads and data | Underlying cloud infrastructure and security services. | Secure applications, data classification, configurations, secrets, permissions, and network exposure. |
AWS documentation recommends controls such as MFA, least-privilege permissions, encryption, and CloudTrail logging. Macie can help discover and protect sensitive data stored in Amazon S3. These capabilities require appropriate setup and follow-through: for example, a secure AWS data center cannot prevent a customer from making a storage resource public, granting excessive permissions, embedding secrets in source code, or failing to investigate logs. AWS also describes a security lifecycle of identification, prevention, detection, response, and remediation. See AWS IAM data protection, AWS Security Incident Response guidance, AWS security, and the AWS Trust Center.
What Amazon’s corporate disclosures establish
Amazon’s 2025 Form 10-K, filed with the SEC, describes processes for assessing, identifying, and managing cybersecurity risks to the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of systems and information. It lists application-security assessments, vulnerability management, penetration testing, security audits, risk assessments, incident-response plans, annual data-protection and cybersecurity training, and oversight by security leadership, senior leadership, the Audit Committee, and the board. These disclosures show a corporate governance framework; they do not establish that incidents never occur or that every control works identically across Amazon businesses. Amazon’s 2025 Form 10-K provides the details.

Steps to strengthen your Amazon account
- Enable 2SV. Use the account settings path above and choose an authenticator app if available and practical for you.
- Use a unique, long password. A reputable password manager can generate and store one; secure its recovery method as carefully as the account itself.
- Protect recovery channels. Use a strong, unique password and MFA for the email account tied to Amazon, and keep your registered phone number current.
- Review the account. Check recent orders, addresses, saved payment methods, subscriptions, and security settings for changes you did not make.
- Manage devices and privacy. Remove access for old or unknown devices where possible, lock devices, and review Alexa or other device settings relevant to your household.
- Be cautious with messages. Navigate directly to Amazon’s site or app rather than following unexpected sign-in links, and never disclose a password or one-time code to an unsolicited contact.
