Stripe is often the most practical starting point for a developer-led product; Braintree is the strongest fit when PayPal and saved payment methods are central; and Adyen is usually the better shortlist choice for larger, multinational or omnichannel merchants. The right option depends on where you sell, how customers pay, whether you need subscriptions, and what your negotiated fees and integration work will actually cost.
How do Adyen, Braintree and Stripe compare?
The services overlap, but they emphasize different needs. Stripe combines payments and recurring billing in a broad developer-oriented platform. Braintree brings cards and PayPal together and offers a Vault for saved payment methods. Adyen emphasizes global payment-method coverage, enterprise use and online/in-person operations. Availability and terms vary by country, account and payment method.
| Decision point | Adyen | Braintree | Stripe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pricing model | Fixed processing fee plus a fee based on the payment method; Adyen says it has no setup or monthly fees. Interchange++ is an option. Exact costs depend on the merchant’s arrangement and payment mix. | Card pricing depends on account and market. PayPal transactions use the merchant’s PayPal account rates. No comparable universal headline card rate is established. | The pricing page lists 2.9% + 30¢ for a successful domestic-card transaction in the United States. Custom pricing is available; this is not a worldwide rate. |
| Payment methods and reach | Cards, wallets, buy now, pay later, bank transfers and real-time payment methods, subject to regional availability. | Cards and PayPal can be accepted through one integration; other methods depend on the account and geography. | The pricing page states 100+ payment methods, 135+ currencies and reach in 195 countries. These figures describe the platform’s stated reach, not a guarantee that every feature or method is available in every country. |
| Recurring payments | Recurring payments and webhooks are documented. | Subscriptions use plans and payment methods stored in the Vault. | Recurring billing and subscriptions are offered as part of the platform. |
| Saved payment data and PCI | Client-side and hosted integration options can reduce exposure to raw card data. PCI obligations depend on the integration; PCI DSS documents may be required. | The Vault encrypts stored payment information and associates it with a payment-method token. CVV is not stored. | Hosted and API-based payment flows and a PCI-compliant vault are available. PCI responsibilities still depend on the chosen implementation. |
| Best fit | Larger global or omnichannel merchants that value localized methods, enterprise controls, flexible settlement and negotiated economics. | Businesses for which PayPal and repeat-payment vaulting are core requirements. | Startups and engineering teams prioritizing launch speed, developer tooling, broad payment coverage and subscriptions. |
Stripe’s pricing-page figures and Adyen’s published fee structure were available in 2026. Payment rates can vary with geography, payment method, card type, foreign exchange and contract terms. Compare written offers for your own business rather than treating a published rate as a complete estimate.
Which processor is cheapest?
There is no universal winner on price. A processing rate is only one part of the cost: the country and type of card, currency conversion, payment method, refunds, disputes and negotiated terms can change the effective amount. A rate that looks lower on a pricing page may not be cheaper for a merchant with a different sales mix.

- Adyen: The pricing page describes a fixed processing fee plus a payment-method fee, with Interchange++ available, and states there are no setup or monthly fees. No single comparable transaction price is published.
- Braintree: The cited materials make card pricing account- and market-dependent and direct PayPal transactions to the merchant’s PayPal rates. They do not establish one worldwide headline card rate.
To compare proposals, use the same assumptions for each provider: your countries and currencies, card-present versus online transactions, average order value, cross-border share, payment-method mix, refunds and chargebacks. Include the engineering and PCI work needed to operate the integration. Ask providers to identify which fees recur and which depend on specific methods or account terms.
Which one supports PayPal, subscriptions and international payments?
Choose Braintree when PayPal is central
Braintree’s main distinction is combining cards and PayPal in one integration, alongside a Vault for reusable payment-method tokens and documented subscriptions. The next-generation PayPal flows described in the cited guide are noted as US-only, so confirm eligibility for your country and product before designing around them. Other available methods also depend on account and geography.

Choose Stripe for a broad product stack and recurring billing
Stripe lists recurring billing and subscriptions as platform features and states that its pricing page covers 100+ payment methods, 135+ currencies and 195-country reach. Treat those as platform-level reach claims, not evidence that every payment method, product or currency is enabled for every merchant in every location. Check the country-specific availability that applies to your business.
Shortlist Adyen for localized and omnichannel payments
Adyen documents cards, wallets, buy now, pay later, bank transfers and real-time methods, with availability varying by region. It is also a candidate when you need to coordinate online and in-person payment reporting or value flexible settlement currencies. Confirm the methods and settlement arrangements offered for your markets and contract.

How hard is each integration?
Integration effort depends less on a simple provider ranking than on the payment flow you choose, the systems you need to connect and how much sensitive card data your application handles. Hosted components and tokenization can reduce exposure to raw card data, but they do not remove every compliance or operational responsibility.
Adyen
Adyen offers Drop-in, hosted/API and client-side options. Its documentation includes webhooks for payment status and related activity. The applicable PCI DSS documentation depends on the integration, so determine the compliance obligations for your particular flow before implementation.

Braintree
For subscriptions, the documented flow involves creating plans, storing customers and payment methods in the Vault, then creating subscriptions. A Vault token can be reused for recurring and non-recurring transactions; CVV is not stored. Plan for subscription status and payment outcomes in your own application rather than treating a stored token as a complete billing system.
Stripe
Stripe offers hosted and API-based payment flows, Billing for subscriptions and Connect for platform scenarios. Its Payments page describes a single integration and extensive documentation as a way to reduce launch time and legacy-system maintenance. The right flow still depends on whether you are taking one-time payments, managing subscriptions or building a platform.

What should a recurring-payment integration handle?
Accepting the first subscription payment is only one part of recurring billing. Build an explicit process for payment events and account state so that a failed charge, refund or dispute does not leave customer access out of sync.
- Use provider webhooks to update payment and subscription status, and make event handling safe to retry.
- Define what happens after a failed payment, including any retry schedule and when an account moves to a past-due or cancelled state.
- Connect successful payments, refunds and disputes to customer entitlements and access.
- Account for tax and the operational work of reconciling transactions against your billing records.
- Test subscription creation, renewal, failure and cancellation paths before relying on them in production.
How should you make the final choice?
- Choose Stripe if you want a developer-led launch with broad stated method and currency coverage and recurring billing, and do not need to optimize primarily around negotiated interchange economics.
- Choose Braintree if PayPal is a primary wallet and you want cards, saved payment methods and recurring billing through one gateway. First verify country and product eligibility, particularly for the next-generation PayPal flows described as US-only in the cited guide.
- Choose Adyen if localization, enterprise controls, unified online and in-person reporting, flexible settlement currencies or volume-based pricing are central to your needs, and your business can work through a more tailored commercial arrangement.
Before committing, validate availability in each market you serve, compare provider quotes against the same transaction mix, and estimate implementation and compliance work alongside processing fees. The best choice is the one that fits the payment experience and operating model your business actually needs.
