Samsung’s reported plan to make fewer foldables in 2025 was attributed to weaker-than-expected early demand for the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6—but Samsung did not confirm the production figures, and the cited report gave no sales totals. The reported target was about 5 million Fold7 and Flip7 phones combined, down from a reported 8.2 million Fold6 and Flip6 run.
What was the reported 2025 production plan?
A December 23, 2024, 9to5Google report, attributing the information to Korean outlet ETNews via an X account, said Samsung planned a combined 2025 production run of about 5 million Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 phones: 2 million Fold7 units and 3 million Flip7 units. The same account put the Fold6 and Flip6 run at 8.2 million.
These are reported production plans, not confirmed output or sales. Samsung’s January and July 2025 public results releases reviewed here did not confirm those unit targets. That absence does not establish that the report was false.
Was weak Fold6 and Flip6 demand the reason?
The report characterized preorders and overall sales of the Fold6 and Flip6 as lower than expected, but it provided no model-specific sales figures or quantified decline. It therefore supports a report of disappointing demand expectations—not a claim that either phone sold a particular number, or that Samsung officially called the models failures.

Market estimates available at the time also suggest the two models should not be treated as having identical demand trends. Counterpoint Research’s December 2, 2024 analysis of DSCC estimates expected Flip6 panel shipments to fall by more than 10% compared with Flip5 panel shipments in 2023, while Fold6 panel shipments were expected to rise by mid-single digits versus Fold5. Those are estimates about display panels, not phone sales.
What the broader foldable market data shows
DSCC also forecast that total Samsung foldable panel procurement would decline by more than 20%, reaching its lowest level since 2021. It forecast 5% growth for the foldable smartphone display market in 2024 and a 4% decline in 2025. These were forecasts published in 2024, and panel procurement is not the same as finished-phone production or customer purchases.

A later market measure points to modest category growth in 2024: Counterpoint Research reported 2.9% year-over-year growth in global foldable smartphone shipments for 2024 and forecast single-digit negative growth in 2025. Shipment figures and panel-procurement estimates measure different things, so they cannot be combined into a single sales result for Samsung’s phones.

Samsung Electronics’ January 31, 2025 FY2024 results release said the Mobile eXperience business would strengthen its foldable lineup to generate new customer demand. That was a statement of strategy, not confirmation of the reported production target or a quantified explanation of Fold6 and Flip6 sales.

In its Q2 2025 results release, Samsung described foldables and the Galaxy S25 series as a focus of its second-half flagship smartphone sales plan. The company continued to position foldables as a flagship priority, while leaving the reported production numbers unconfirmed.
For context on the products and timing, Samsung’s 2025 half-year interim report identifies the Fold6 and Flip6 as July 2024 products.
