Block’s 2025 Layoff Cut 931 Jobs; Its 2026 Plan Is Separate

The 931-job Block reduction reported in March 2025 was separate from the company’s February 2026 announcement affecting more than 4,000 people.

Jack Dorsey’s Block cut 931 employees in March 2025, according to TechCrunch’s report at the time. That is the “more than 900” figure in this story. In February 2026, Block announced a separate reduction affecting more than 4,000 people, as it said it would reorganize around smaller teams and intelligence tools. The two announcements are distinct, and the later figure describes people asked to leave or enter consultation—not a confirmed count of completed departures.

Are the 900 layoffs and the 4,000-plus reduction the same event?

No. The 931 figure refers to a March 2025 reduction reported by TechCrunch. The more-than-4,000 figure comes from Block’s February 2026 shareholder letter. The dates, stated reasons, and degree of certainty differ.

What happened in the March 2025 reduction?

On March 25, 2025, TechCrunch reported that Block had cut 931 people, about 8% of its staff, citing a leaked company message. The report attributed the stated categories to an email from Dorsey: 391 people for strategy reasons, 460 for performance reasons, and 80 managers as part of a hierarchy change. Those reported categories add up to 931.

TechCrunch also reported that 193 managers moved into individual-contributor roles. That was a role change, not an additional layoff count. According to the same report, Dorsey’s email said the cuts were not for financial reasons and were not intended to replace workers with AI. These explanations are attributed to the reported email, rather than an independently established account of every employee’s circumstances. Read TechCrunch’s account.

What did Block announce in February 2026?

In a shareholder letter filed with the SEC on February 26, 2026, Dorsey said Block was reducing its workforce from over 10,000 people to just under 6,000. He described the action as “over 4,000 people” being “asked to leave or entering into consultation.” That wording does not establish how many separations were completed. The Associated Press reported the announcement the following day and said it was unclear which employees or locations would be affected. Block’s letter; AP’s report.

Why is Block cutting staff?

For the 2026 announcement, Dorsey framed the cuts as a change in how the company operates, saying: “The core thesis is simple. Intelligence tools have changed what it means to build and run a company.” He also argued that smaller teams using the tools Block is building could do more. This is management’s rationale; the cited reporting does not independently demonstrate that AI caused the reductions or was the sole reason for them.

The reported 2025 explanation was different: strategy, performance, and a hierarchy change. TechCrunch said Dorsey’s email denied that those cuts were for financial reasons or to replace workers with AI. The two rounds should not be collapsed into a single AI-driven layoff story.

Does “crypto business” describe Block accurately?

Only partly. Block has Bitcoin-related activity, but it is also a financial-technology and payments company with Square and Cash App. Describing it simply as a crypto business leaves out major parts of its operations. The workforce announcements concern Block as a company, not a standalone cryptocurrency operation. The Block’s coverage provides additional context on its Bitcoin activity.

Do the cuts mean Block’s business was shrinking?

Block’s 2026 shareholder letter reported fiscal 2025 gross profit of $10.36 billion, up 17% year over year, and fourth-quarter gross profit of $2.87 billion, up 24% year over year. These are company-reported results. They provide business context, but do not by themselves explain either workforce decision or prove that the company was financially healthy in every respect.
