Microsoft’s Blue Badge Redesign: The 2015 Story Behind the New Look

Microsoft’s redesigned employee badges rolled out in 2015 after the company adapted an engineer’s unofficial concept. The mission-bearing ID was a visible culture signal, not proof of organizational change.

In July 2015, Microsoft began issuing redesigned employee ID badges. The cleaner look grew out of an informal concept by engineer Ahmet Alp Balkan, which the company’s branding team adapted for production. It was a small, visible sign of Microsoft’s identity shift under CEO Satya Nadella—not proof that a badge redesign changed the company’s culture.

What Microsoft’s “Blue Badges” were

In contemporary coverage, “Blue Badge” was cultural shorthand for a Microsoft employee’s blue identification badge. The card served a practical workplace function, but it was also a familiar marker of belonging to the company. The term describes the badge in this story; it should not be read as a formal employment category.

GeekWire reported that Microsoft was also redesigning orange badges worn by contractors and vendors. That detail was attributed to information the outlet received from Microsoft, rather than a separate public announcement, and does not establish that the same color convention applied at every facility.

What changed in the redesign

The production badge updated the name, portrait, and company-brand layout. The photo moved from a square treatment to a circular one. The first name was left-aligned, while the last name sat above and to the right of the photograph. The revised information layout included the employee number, and the Microsoft name appeared alongside its logo. The reverse carried the company’s mission statement for that period: “Empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more.” GeekWire’s July 2015 report described the rollout and visible changes; Balkan’s account of the adopted design explains that the production version evolved from his concept.

The redesign’s visual logic can be read as a clearer hierarchy: a more prominent name and a more contemporary portrait treatment make the card easier to scan, while the logo and mission connect it to Microsoft’s wider identity. Those are design interpretations, not documented claims that Microsoft measured better recognition or security. A revised layout could make employee information less exposed to casual view, but the available accounts do not establish a security improvement.

How an engineer’s side project reached production

A personal critique, not a commissioned assignment

On February 9, 2014, Balkan published “The Blue Badge – Reimagined,” a concept he said he had created in his spare time. He criticized the old card’s empty space, alignment, photo quality, and placement of employee information, including a number he considered sensitive. The post explicitly described the work as personal rather than an announcement of Microsoft plans. His original post documents both the critique and the unofficial status of the proposal.

From public concept to company design

The concept drew attention inside Microsoft as well as among technology and design audiences. On July 14, 2015, Balkan wrote that Microsoft had decided to adopt it. The company’s branding team then iterated on the idea before the new badges began rolling out that July, as Balkan’s adoption update describes. This was employee initiative followed by corporate review—not a design copied unchanged, nor an entirely independent employee project carried straight into production.

Balkan estimated in his 2015 post that the badges would reach more than 100,000 Microsoft employees. That was his estimate, not a separately verified workforce count. The sources establish that issuance began, but do not give a complete schedule or confirm when every employee received a replacement.

Why the mission statement mattered

Printing the mission on the reverse made the badge more than an ID layout: it put a company-wide message on an object employees carried as part of daily work. In April 2015, Nadella described Microsoft’s mission in terms of empowering people and linked it to employees’ ability to do meaningful work. His Microsoft blog post provides that period’s context for the wording used on the badge.

That placement supports a reasonable symbolic reading: the card joined identification with internal branding at a moment when Microsoft was emphasizing empowerment and collaboration. It does not show that employees changed their behavior, that morale improved, or that the badge caused broader organizational change. The object can reflect a company’s message without proving how fully the company lived up to it.

A small artifact in the “new Microsoft” moment

In 2015, Microsoft was refreshing its public identity and emphasizing a mobile-first, cloud-first strategy alongside the Windows 10 launch. Balkan’s 2014 post described rebranding across the company, from its logo and software to campus shuttles and directional signs. Against that backdrop, redesigning an employee badge brought the modernization into an everyday workplace object.

The story is notable in part because it shows how a company-wide identity can absorb an idea from inside the organization. Balkan initiated the concept; Microsoft’s branding team shaped the final version. The badge is therefore a compact example of bottom-up creativity meeting corporate design control—not evidence that every employee proposal could, or did, become policy.

What the badge story does—and does not—establish

  • Established: Microsoft adopted a badge concept first published by Balkan as an unofficial personal project in 2014, then issued a revised production design in 2015.
  • Established: The new card changed the portrait and name layout and carried the period’s mission statement on the back.
  • Not established: That the redesign measurably improved security, employee pride, morale, retention, or productivity.
  • Not established: That every employee received the badge at once, that the reported contractor-badge redesign was universal, or that the 2015 design remains in use today.

Read in its proper time frame, the redesign is a concrete detail of Microsoft’s 2015 identity shift: a personal design experiment became a company-issued object, then carried the company’s stated mission into employees’ daily routines.
