Disney alleges that Connolly left before his employment agreement allowed and that YouTube knowingly encouraged him to break that contract. The case is about executive hiring, contract rights and sensitive business negotiations—not copyright infringement or YouTube TV pricing.
What happened?
Disney filed suit against YouTube and Connolly after he accepted a job as YouTube’s global head of media and sports. The filing was reported around May 21–22, 2025. Disney asked the court to prevent Connolly from taking or performing the new role while the dispute proceeded.
The filing and allegations were reported by Bloomberg Law and the Los Angeles Times.
Who is Justin Connolly, and why did the move matter?
Connolly was Disney’s president of platform distribution. His work included third-party media sales, distribution strategy, affiliate marketing and distribution-related operations for Disney’s direct-to-consumer businesses. At YouTube, he was expected to oversee media-company relationships and the platform’s sports portfolio, according to the Los Angeles Times.

That background made the move sensitive to Disney. The complaint, as described in reporting, said Connolly was involved in negotiations over renewal of Disney licensing arrangements with YouTube. Disney alleged that he knew confidential information about its distribution deals, deal economics and negotiating strategy. Those are allegations, not court findings.
What did Disney say his contract required?
Disney said Connolly signed a new three-year employment agreement in November 2024. News reports described its term as January 1, 2025, through December 31, 2027, with March 1, 2027, as the earliest date he could terminate it. Disney alleged that leaving earlier breached the agreement; the agreement’s full text and every restriction it contained are not established by the cited reporting.

Disney’s reported claims included breach of contract, interference with a contractual relationship and unfair competition. Its theory against YouTube was that the company knew of Connolly’s obligations and induced him to leave early. Hiring a competitor’s employee is not, by itself, proof of unlawful conduct: the contract, the new employer’s knowledge and actions, and the applicable law all matter.
What was Disney asking the court to do?
Disney sought preliminary and permanent injunctive relief. A preliminary injunction is a request for a court order during the case, not a final decision that the allegations are true. Disney’s practical aim was to stop Connolly from immediately moving into or performing the YouTube job while it argued that his contractual obligations remained enforceable.

Disney also pointed to the risk that confidential deal terms or negotiation strategy could be used or disclosed. General industry experience is not the same as protected confidential information or a trade secret, and the available reporting does not establish that Connolly disclosed any such material. Whether a restriction is enforceable or an injunction is appropriate depends on the contract and evidence; the complaint alone does not settle those questions.
What this lawsuit is—and is not—about
- It is an employment and business dispute. The reported claims concern Connolly’s agreement and YouTube’s alleged inducement and interference.
- It is not a reported copyright case. The claims described in coverage do not allege that YouTube infringed Disney films, television programs or user-uploaded videos.
- It is not directly a YouTube TV pricing case. YouTube’s growing role in television distribution and sports helps explain the strategic backdrop, but the trigger was Connolly’s hire.
- It does not establish that YouTube cannot hire former Disney employees. The dispute turns on the particular agreement and alleged conduct, not a general ban on employees changing jobs.
There is also separate litigation involving Disney’s live-TV market practices and YouTube TV and DirecTV Stream. It is not the Connolly employment case; a separate settlement document describes that matter at Courthouse News.

Why the dispute matters beyond one executive
Media companies increasingly compete and partner across traditional television, streaming, sports, licensing and digital distribution. YouTube’s role in television and sports distribution makes executives with experience in carriage, licensing and media-company relationships valuable. When such an executive moves between companies, ordinary professional knowledge may travel with them, but confidential terms and protected business information raise different legal questions.

The May 2025 filing and Disney’s requested relief are documented in contemporaneous coverage. The sources cited here do not establish a sufficiently verified final outcome, injunction ruling, settlement or dismissal. YouTube had not immediately responded to a request for comment when the Los Angeles Times published its report; that first-cycle reporting does not establish the company’s later position in court.
