Verizon announced on November 20, 2025, that it would begin reducing its workforce by more than 13,000 employees as part of a company-wide restructuring. The company also said it would reduce outsourced and other outside labor. That is the confirmed figure—not exactly 13,000, and not the 15,000-job target reported before Verizon’s announcement.
What Verizon confirmed
CEO Dan Schulman announced that Verizon would reduce its workforce by more than 13,000 employees. The changes would affect every part of the organization to some degree, and the company said it would contact affected employees individually. Verizon also planned to cut outsourced and other outside labor expenses. Verizon’s announcement did not provide a department-by-department, location-by-location, or job-title breakdown.
The announcement date was November 20, 2025, and the reduction process was to begin then. That does not mean every affected employee left on that date. Reuters reporting reproduced by Investing.com said more than 80% of affected employees were expected to leave in the following month; Verizon’s public announcement itself did not give that implementation timetable. The report also covered the expected severance charges.
Why Verizon said it was restructuring
Verizon framed the cuts as part of a broader effort to lower costs, simplify the organization, improve efficiency, and direct spending toward strategic priorities. The company said the changes were intended to help it respond to customers and competitors. It did not identify one department or technology as the sole cause.

Although Verizon discussed digital training and AI-related skills in connection with support for departing workers, its announcement does not establish that AI directly replaced the employees whose roles were eliminated. Nor does it show that a single factor—such as wireless demand or debt—caused the workforce reduction.
Why earlier reports said 15,000
On November 13, 2025, Reuters reported a possible target of about 15,000 jobs. That was a reported plan before Verizon made its public announcement. A week later, Verizon confirmed a workforce reduction of more than 13,000 employees. The figures describe different stages of reporting and should not be treated as interchangeable: Verizon did not confirm 15,000 layoffs in its announcement. How large was the reduction relative to Verizon’s workforce?
Verizon reported approximately 89,900 full-time-equivalent employees as of December 31, 2025, in its 2025 annual report. Comparing more than 13,000 announced positions with that year-end figure suggests a reduction equivalent to roughly 14% or more of the reported FTE workforce. That is an approximate comparison, not a percentage Verizon published: the announcement’s employee figure and the year-end FTE count may use different definitions, and the reductions took place over time. Verizon also discussed outside labor separately.

What the cuts cost—and what that figure does not mean
Reuters reported that Verizon expected to record $1.6 billion to $1.8 billion in severance charges in the fourth quarter of 2025. These are accounting charges associated with the workforce reduction, not a published estimate of the company’s long-term savings. They also do not reveal an average severance package per employee or necessarily capture every transition or restructuring expense.
Reuters described the move as Verizon’s largest single layoff. That characterization should be attributed to reporting; Verizon’s announcement did not label it a company record.
What support Verizon announced for departing employees
Verizon said it would establish a $20 million Reskilling and Career Transition Fund focused on skills development, digital training, and job placement. The company also mentioned preparation for changing labor-market needs, including AI-related skills.

The public announcement does not specify who qualifies, how workers apply, whether contractors are eligible, what services each person can access, or whether the fund provides individual cash payments. Departing employees should seek eligibility and enrollment details directly from Verizon rather than assume the fund covers a particular course or service.

For employees and job seekers
The announcement confirms a large workforce reduction, but not which roles or locations were affected in what numbers. It also does not establish the final number of departures, the terms of individual severance packages, or the treatment of benefits and bonuses. Those details cannot be inferred from the headline figure.
For Verizon customers
Verizon did not announce a service shutdown or say that customers would lose network access. The workforce announcement alone does not establish changes to stores, customer support, billing, or network operations. It is reasonable to watch for specific company notices about a service or location, but predictions of worse service or store closures are not supported by this announcement.

What Verizon said about the transformation afterward
In 2026 earnings communications, Verizon described the cuts as part of broader transformation actions. Its first-quarter release linked those actions to growth and profitability, and its second-quarter release presented the company’s strategic transformation alongside operating results. These are Verizon’s descriptions of its progress; they do not prove that the layoffs alone caused any financial or operating improvement. What remains unclear
- How the reductions were distributed by department, job title, location, or union status.
- How many contractors or other outside workers were affected, separate from Verizon employees.
- The final number of departures and the detailed terms of severance, benefits, and bonuses.
- How affected workers can access the $20 million transition fund and which services it covers.
- Whether particular stores, support teams, or network operations changed as a result.
Verizon’s announcement and annual report establish the scale and broad purpose of the restructuring, but do not answer these individual or operational questions.
