But the promotion’s stated May 31, 2026 deadline has passed, and “lifetime” means a license for one Office generation—not every future version or Microsoft 365’s cloud services. Microsoft’s U.S. store showed Office Home 2024 at $179.99 on August 18, 2026; that edition and the promoted Home & Business edition are not interchangeable.
What the price comparison actually says
Microsoft’s U.S. store listed Office Home 2024 at $179.99, Microsoft 365 Personal at $99.99 per year, and Microsoft 365 Family at $129.99 per year on August 18, 2026. At those listed prices, the one-time Office Home purchase costs less than two years of either subscription. Prices and promotions can change, and the Office 2024 price is for Home, not Home & Business.
| Product | Listed U.S. price on August 18, 2026 | Two-year cost | Approximate break-even against Office Home 2024 at $179.99 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Office Home 2024 | $179.99 once | $179.99 | — |
| Microsoft 365 Personal | $99.99 per year | $199.98 | About 1.8 years |
| Microsoft 365 Family | $129.99 per year | $259.98 | About 1.4 years |
The comparison uses Microsoft’s U.S. listed prices, not taxes or any other costs. Microsoft also displayed monthly options of $9.99 for Personal and $12.99 for Family. See Microsoft’s product and pricing comparison.
The separate $129.97 figure refers to a reported third-party promotion for Office Home & Business 2024—not Microsoft’s standard retail price. Coverage said the deal was advertised through May 31, 2026, a date that has passed. Its reported price would equal about 1.3 years of Personal or one year of Family at the annual prices above, but it should not be treated as currently available. The report on the promotion does not establish that the same offer remains live.

What “lifetime Office” buys—and what it does not
“Lifetime” is reseller shorthand for a perpetual license to a particular release. It does not mean that the buyer receives every future Office version, unlimited installations, or support for life. Microsoft describes Office 2024 as a one-time purchase; it does not include an upgrade to the next major release or the Microsoft 365 subscription services. The apps can continue to be used without renewing a subscription, subject to license terms and the product’s support lifecycle. Microsoft’s Office 2024 FAQ explains the editions and license model.
| Edition | Included apps | Use and scope |
|---|---|---|
| Office Home 2024 | Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote | One PC or Mac; intended for home or school use |
| Office Home & Business 2024 | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook | One PC or Mac; permits home or commercial use |
Check the exact edition before paying: Home does not include Outlook, and its stated use differs from Home & Business. Do not assume a particular deal includes both Windows and Mac, or lets you move the license freely to a replacement computer. The product listing and license terms should identify the platform, activation method, account requirements, transfer or reactivation rules, and any region limits. Microsoft publishes Office 2024 Home & Business license terms.
What Microsoft 365 adds to the bill
A subscription is not simply the same applications rented annually. Microsoft 365 Personal is for one person; Family supports up to six people. Microsoft lists 1 TB of OneDrive storage with Personal and up to 6 TB total with Family, generally 1 TB per person. The subscriptions include current desktop app versions, ongoing feature updates, use across multiple PCs, Macs, tablets and phones, and plan-dependent premium features such as Copilot. Family sharing can spread the subscription cost across household members, though AI benefits may be limited to the subscription owner. Details can vary by plan and change over time; consult Microsoft’s current plan comparison.

- [Ideal for One Person] — With a one-time purchase of Microsoft Office Home & Business 2024, you can create, organize, and get things done.
- [Classic Office Apps] — Includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote.
- [Desktop Only & Customer Support] — To install and use on one PC or Mac, on desktop only. Microsoft 365 has your back with readily available technical support through chat or phone.
Office 2024 receives security updates under Microsoft’s support policy, but those are not the same as ongoing new features or an entitlement to the next major release. A perpetual purchase also does not include the subscription’s OneDrive allowance or its multi-device and household-sharing model. Microsoft outlines the distinction in its Office 2024 and Microsoft 365 comparison.

For example, at the U.S. price of $179.99, Office Home 2024 averages about $36 per year if you use it for five years. That is a simple cash-cost comparison, not a complete value comparison: it excludes any later Office upgrade, separate cloud storage, or the value of multiple users, devices and subscription features.
Compare the subscription’s cumulative cost over the same period with the one-time purchase. Then account for the features you would otherwise pay for separately. A Family plan shared by several people should be compared with the total household need, not treated as a one-person alternative to one Office license.

- Confirm whether you need Outlook and whether your intended use is commercial.
- Decide whether OneDrive storage, file syncing, sharing and version history replace a service you already pay for.
- Consider whether you need browser access, real-time collaboration, Copilot or the newest features.
- If you expect to buy a later perpetual Office release, include that possible cost in the longer-term comparison.
Which option fits your situation?
Office 2024 may suit one fixed computer
A one-time license can make sense for a person who mainly uses one PC or Mac, works with local files, wants the classic desktop apps and expects to keep that Office version for several years. It is a stronger fit if cloud storage is already covered elsewhere and recurring software charges are unwelcome. A freelancer or small business should choose an edition whose terms permit the intended commercial use; Home & Business is the edition identified for home or work use.

Microsoft 365 Personal may suit a multi-device individual
Personal is more compelling when one person works across several computers and mobile devices, needs the OneDrive allowance, values ongoing feature updates, or wants subscription features. The higher cumulative cost buys services and flexibility a one-computer perpetual license does not provide.
Microsoft 365 Family may suit a household
For multiple people who would otherwise need separate software and cloud storage, Family’s shared-user structure can change the per-person economics. Compare the number of people who will genuinely use it and the storage they need, rather than comparing only the plan’s total annual price with a single Office license.
Light users may need neither purchase
Microsoft offers free browser versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint with a Microsoft account. They can be enough for basic editing, but they are not a full substitute for desktop functionality or every offline workflow. Students, teachers and employees should also check whether their school or employer already provides Microsoft 365 before buying a personal copy.

Business users should separate app licensing from business services
Office Home & Business 2024 can cover desktop apps on one computer with commercial-use rights, but it does not itself provide the cloud identity, centralized administration, Exchange Online, Teams, compliance or device-management services a business may need. Consumer Microsoft 365 Family is not a replacement for an appropriate business plan.

A low price is useful only if the seller is clear about what is being licensed. Before checkout, verify:
- Exact SKU: Home or Home & Business, and whether Outlook is included.
- Platform and device count: Windows or Mac, one installation or another stated scope, and any replacement-computer process.
- Usage rights: whether the license covers your home, school or commercial use.
- Seller and redemption: who sells it, whether activation is through a Microsoft account or a key, and what account or region restrictions apply.
- Transfer and refunds: what happens after a device change, and the seller’s refund terms if activation fails or the product is not as described.
- Deal validity: the live price, expiration date and checkout terms; a historical promotional price is not proof of current availability.
If a listing promises “lifetime” access without naming the Office edition and license scope, do not infer that it includes Microsoft 365 benefits or future upgrades.

Quick Recap
- LibreOffice is a free, open-source desktop suite. It can handle common office tasks, but complex Office files may not retain perfect formatting, and it does not provide Outlook or Microsoft 365 collaboration services.
- Google Docs, Sheets and Slides suit browser-first collaboration around Google Drive; they are a less direct fit for users who require full desktop Office features or Microsoft-specific workflows.
- Apple iWork offers Pages, Numbers and Keynote for Apple-device users. Frequent exchange of complex Word, Excel or PowerPoint documents can make file-format fidelity a concern.
