The most reliable approach is not chasing the biggest discount: make a grocery list, check store and digital offers, and compare the final unit price with sale and store-brand alternatives.
1. Start with your list, then look for coupons
Build your grocery list around items your household regularly buys. University of Tennessee Extension specialists Kristin Riggsbee, Kristen Johnson, Ann Berry, and Christopher Sneed advise shoppers to consider “what items you buy often and how long you can keep them at home without spoiling.” That keeps a discount from turning into an unnecessary purchase or food waste.
- Write down the groceries you need and the brands or substitutes you would actually use.
- Check offers at the stores you already visit, then match coupons to items on the list.
- Compare the price per unit—such as per ounce or per pound—rather than relying on the discount amount or package price.
Coupons are not automatically the cheapest option. The University of Tennessee Extension specialists note that a store brand or generic item may cost less than a name-brand product even after a coupon is applied. Compare equivalent sizes and unit prices before deciding.
2. Check retailer apps and loyalty offers
Digital coupons and store loyalty programs are now common parts of couponing. In The Krazy Coupon Lady’s 2025 survey of 3,250 app users, 89% said they used digital coupons and 79% used retailer loyalty programs or apps. Those findings describe the surveyed couponers, not all shoppers.

Look in the retailer’s app or website for coupons and weekly offers before you shop. University of Tennessee Extension says digital coupons can be used alongside online grocery shopping and pickup, and advises checking the weekly ads for the stores you use because offers vary by retailer. Confirm that an offer is loaded to the correct loyalty account and applies to the size or quantity you intend to buy.
3. Stack discounts only when the final price wins
A sale, coupon, and loyalty offer can combine to lower a price, but the combination is useful only if the result beats the alternatives. Compare the final price per unit against the sale price without a coupon and the equivalent store brand. RRD’s 2024 findings indicate consumers are responding selectively to price pressure: 34% said they used more coupons and discounts, and 32% said they bought products only when on sale or with a coupon.

Rising grocery costs help explain why shoppers are looking for savings. U.S. food prices rose 23.6% from 2020 to 2024, according to a USDA Economic Research Service figure reported by Kiplinger in 2025. A coupon can help manage that pressure, but it does not make an unaffordable item affordable or a product you do not need a bargain.
Which couponing method fits your shopping?
These methods differ in how offers are found and redeemed. The best choice depends on your store, the item, and the time and information you are willing to exchange for a discount.

| Method | Price impact | Time and coverage | Limits and data considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper coupons | Can reduce the price of a listed item; compare the final unit price with other options. | Requires finding and presenting the coupon at a participating store. | Check the printed expiration date, product requirements, and quantity limits. No app is needed to redeem a paper coupon. |
| Retailer digital coupons and loyalty apps | Can apply store-specific offers to purchases; digital coupons were used by 89% of respondents in The Krazy Coupon Lady’s 2025 survey of 3,250 app users. | Offers vary by retailer and may be integrated with online ordering or pickup. | Check account, item, and quantity requirements. Apps can collect personal and shopping data; review permissions and terms. |
| Cash-back or rebate apps | May provide cash back for qualifying purchases; confirm the eligible product and redemption requirements. | Coverage depends on the app’s participating retailers and listed offers. | Check offer expiration and submission rules. App use can involve sharing personal or purchase information. |
| Weekly-circular tools | Help compare advertised store offers; they do not guarantee the lowest final unit price. | Kiplinger reports that Flipp lets shoppers enter a ZIP code to view nearby supermarket circulars and, at some stores, add coupons to loyalty accounts. | Store coverage and available features vary. Check the retailer’s own offer terms before buying. |
Kiplinger also identifies Ibotta as a cash-back option for qualifying purchases at many grocers. It reports that Flashfood offers discounts of up to 50% on meat, produce, and other items nearing sell-by dates at participating stores. Availability, eligible products, and terms depend on location and retailer; check the current offer before relying on a discount.

- You would not otherwise buy it: The discount is not a saving if it leads you to spend on an unnecessary item.
- You cannot use it in time: Buy only what you can store safely and use or freeze before it spoils. Bulk buying makes sense only when you have the storage, can afford the purchase, and will use the food.
- The final unit price is higher: Compare with store brands, generic options, and competing sale prices, including the cost of any larger package.
- The offer has conditions: Check expiration dates, item and size requirements, purchase limits, and any store-specific stacking rules before checkout.
- The time outweighs the value: In The Krazy Coupon Lady’s 2025 survey, 20% of respondents cited time as a frustration, 21% cited complexity from multiple apps and options, and 20% cited stacking rules or item limits. If tracking an offer takes more effort than the discount is worth to you, skip it.
Protect your information when using shopping apps
The Federal Trade Commission cautions that shopping-app savings may come at the cost of personal information. Apps can collect details such as your name, contact information, location, purchase history, and payment information. Before installing one, read its privacy policy and terms, review location permissions, and understand how billing errors are handled. A coupon is optional; you do not need to install every app to shop strategically.
