Can I trade in a Switch Lite?
Do not assume that an offer for a standard Switch or OLED also applies to a Lite. Eligibility and value depend on each retailer’s current accepted-model list and appraisal. The current Best Buy promotion surfaced a maximum for a Switch OLED, not a guaranteed value for a Lite; the GameStop quote reviewed was for a standard console and is expired. If your old Switch will be gone before you set up Switch 2, Nintendo recommends using its server-based system-transfer method. Nintendo Support says: “This system transfer method is recommended if you will not have your Nintendo Switch console when you get your Nintendo Switch 2 console, like if you’re trading in, selling, or giving away your previous console.” Read Nintendo’s Switch-to-Switch 2 system-transfer instructions and choose the method that fits your handoff timing.
If you will still have the old console during setup
Nintendo’s local communication option is intended for a transfer while the old Switch is available during Switch 2 setup. Follow the on-screen process and check Nintendo’s instructions for any game-specific transfer limits before you begin.

If you will trade in or sell the old console first
The server-based route uploads the relevant data and initializes the old Switch. During setup, Nintendo displays the deadline for downloading the uploaded data; it also appears in account settings. Nintendo says the stored transfer is available for up to one year, but use the displayed deadline rather than assuming you have the full year. Because initiating the process initializes the old device, complete the upload only when you are ready to hand it off.
If the Switch is shared, tell other users before starting a transfer. Transfer behavior can differ by method, and game-specific limitations may apply.
What should I check before handing over the console?
- Identify the exact model. Confirm whether yours is a standard Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED; do not apply an offer for one model to another.
- Check the live offer. Separate the trade appraisal from any coupon, note whether the payout is cash or store credit, and confirm the participating location and eligible Switch 2 models.
