Compare equivalent HPE ProLiant and Dell PowerEdge configurations against your workload, existing management tools, security requirements, support terms, and total lifecycle cost. Vendor portfolio descriptions can help you shortlist systems, but they do not establish which server will perform better or cost less in your environment.
Start with the workload, not the brand
HPE ProLiant and Dell PowerEdge are broad portfolios, not single products with directly comparable specifications. HPE describes systems for rack, tower, edge, and AI use cases. Dell’s portfolio documentation covers rack and tower families and points to specialized XE and XR systems. The right comparison is between models intended for similar work and capacity—not between the two brands in the abstract.
Before requesting quotes, document the work the servers must do and the constraints they must fit:
- Workload: virtualization, databases or ERP, AI training or inference, storage, analytics, or edge applications.
- Capacity and growth: required CPU capacity, memory, storage, network throughput, and expected growth over the planned service life.
- Form factor and site limits: rack, tower, or edge placement; available rack space; power budget; cooling; and physical environment.
- Resilience and expansion: required redundancy, storage layout, network paths, accelerator support, and room for future cards or drives.
Use those requirements to select candidate models with comparable intended workloads and capacity. A family name alone does not establish that two systems have equivalent processors, memory ceilings, storage options, or expansion limits.

Build a like-for-like configuration
Ask each vendor or reseller to quote the same workload capacity and service term. Record the exact model and SKU: options that look similar at the family level can differ in components, compatibility, and cost.
| Compare | What to specify on both quotes |
|---|---|
| Processor | Processor family and generation, processor count, and the capacity required by the workload. |
| Memory | Memory type, total capacity, and any capacity or configuration requirements for the intended workload. |
| Storage | Drive count and media, RAID or HBA choice, usable capacity, and throughput or resiliency requirements. |
| Networking and expansion | Network adapters, accelerator options, expansion slots, and any required I/O capacity. |
| Chassis and power | Chassis dimensions, power-supply configuration, rack fit, and power limits relevant to the installation. |
| Service and software | Support duration and response coverage, management licenses, deployment, and required software compatibility. |
Check model-level specifications and operating-system support before placing an order. HPE QuickSpecs and portfolio materials distinguish specifications by product and model; Dell’s documentation directs buyers to model-specific hardware and operating-system support information. Availability and supported options can change, so confirm the final configuration in the quote and compatibility documentation for the relevant region.
Compare management in the environment you already run
Management tools can affect administrator time, integration work, and license expense. HPE’s ecosystem includes embedded iLO remote management and Compute Ops Management for fleet and lifecycle functions; OneView is relevant to portions of the ProLiant portfolio. Dell pairs embedded iDRAC management with OpenManage. The precise features and licensing depend on the server generation, model, and software tier.
| Area | HPE | Dell |
|---|---|---|
| Embedded server management | iLO; verify functions and license requirements for the selected system. | iDRAC; Dell describes it as embedded, agent-free management with Redfish API support. Verify generation-specific capabilities. |
| Fleet and lifecycle tools | Compute Ops Management; OneView applies in portions of the portfolio. Confirm model and workflow fit. | OpenManage portfolio; advanced deployment, configuration-drift, and integration functions may depend on licensing. |
Test the tasks your team actually performs rather than comparing product names. Check remote console and virtual media access, inventory, firmware lifecycle, alert handling, APIs, automation, integrations, and recurring license costs. If your administrators already operate one ecosystem, include the effort and risk of introducing another in the evaluation.

Verify security capabilities against required controls
Security features should be checked for the exact model, generation, and license—not inferred from a portfolio-level claim. Dell’s portfolio guide describes silicon-based root of trust on 14th-generation and later PowerEdge servers and discusses secure-management features. HPE’s EL220 Gen12 QuickSpecs describe enhanced security functionality under iLO Advanced. These are vendor descriptions, not independent comparative assessments, and they do not establish that every capability applies to every SKU.
Map each requirement to documented evidence for the proposed configuration. Ask about hardware or silicon root of trust, signed firmware, secure boot, component validation, credential handling, audit logs, and the security-update process. Confirm which capabilities are enabled by default, which require a license, and how the organization can verify and manage them.

Purchase price alone does not show which system costs less to operate. Request written quotes for matched configurations and service terms, and include the costs that apply to your deployment:
- Server hardware and management software licenses.
- Support duration, response coverage, and any deployment services.
- Rack rails, installation, spare parts, and compatibility work.
- Power and cooling under the expected workload, where you have suitable estimates or measurements.
- Operating costs and the planned refresh horizon.
HPE’s 2026 QuickSpecs for the ProLiant Compute EL220 Gen12 state an example of three years of parts, three years of labor, and three years of onsite support with next-business-day response. That is a model-specific stated warranty example, not a universal ProLiant term; verify the geography and exact coverage in the quote. Comparable support terms and matched power-efficiency results are not established here, so a general claim that HPE or Dell is cheaper would not be justified.

Use a proof of concept when performance will decide
Vendor specifications describe products; they are not a controlled cross-vendor benchmark. If performance is decisive, test the exact candidate configurations with the workload that matters to your organization.
- Use the same application build, dataset, tuning policy, and service-level target on both systems.
- Record throughput, latency, utilization, power, and operational overhead under comparable conditions.
- Check whether each system meets the workload’s capacity, resilience, and service requirements—not just a peak performance figure.
- Include setup and management tasks that affect the team’s day-to-day operations.
No controlled HPE-versus-Dell benchmark is established by the vendor materials described here. A conclusion about which system is faster requires matched testing; a vendor specification page alone cannot supply that verdict.
Make the decision on evidence that matches your purchase
Compare the shortlisted systems across workload results, configuration and expansion, management fit, security evidence, support coverage, and lifecycle cost. Keep the exact SKU, region, license, and service terms attached to each finding. If performance is not decisive, operational fit and a complete quote may distinguish the candidates; if it is, rely on a workload-relevant proof of concept rather than brand reputation.
