A current BIS hallmark on gold jewellery has three parts: the BIS logo, the stated purity in caratage and fineness, and a six-character alphanumeric HUID. You can check the HUID using the official BIS Care app’s Verify HUID feature. The stamp, app check and a purity test do different jobs: seeing a mark does not by itself authenticate the code or prove the jewellery’s actual gold content.
What the BIS hallmark marks mean
BIS defines hallmarking as the accurate determination and official recording of the proportionate content of precious metal in an article. For gold jewellery bearing a HUID-era hallmark, the three marks are the BIS logo, the purity in caratage and fineness, and the HUID. BIS describes the HUID as a unique, traceable code for each hallmarked item; it was introduced on 1 July 2021. See the BIS Hallmarking FAQs.
Caratage and fineness
Caratage and fineness express the article’s stated gold grade in two forms. Under IS 1417:2016, BIS lists these permitted grades:

Compare the mark with the grade stated for the particular item you intend to buy; the list does not make one grade universally best.

HUID
HUID stands for Hallmark Unique Identification. It is a six-character alphanumeric code assigned uniquely to a hallmarked item, not a purity grade. BIS says consumers can use it to verify HUID-marked hallmarked jewellery through its app.
How to check a gold hallmark and HUID number
- Inspect the article. Look for the BIS logo, purity marking and six-character HUID. A 10x jeweller’s loupe can make tiny lettering easier to read. BIS consumer guidance says a jeweller should have a magnifying glass of at least 10x to show the hallmark.
- Verify the code. Open the official BIS Care app and select Verify HUID. BIS describes this feature as a way to verify the authenticity of HUID-marked hallmarked jewellery and says it can be used before purchase. Follow the app’s prompts and compare the information returned with the article.
- Check every piece and component. In a pair, inspect both articles. For jewellery with detachable parts, check each part separately; BIS consumer guidance says each piece in a pair and each detachable part should carry a hallmark. See the BIS Common Consumer FAQs.
- Seek an assay if purity is still in doubt. A BIS-recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centre can test jewellery or a sample on a chargeable basis and provide an assay report identifying marks on the article. Details are on BIS’s Consumer Protection page.
What each check can—and cannot—tell you
- A loupe helps you see a small stamp; it does not authenticate the HUID or establish the gold content.
- The BIS Care app’s Verify HUID feature checks HUID information; it is not a substitute for testing the metal’s actual purity.
- Testing at a BIS-recognized centre addresses concerns about actual purity. It is distinct from simply viewing a stamp or verifying a code.
What to do if the marked purity is disputed
BIS states that if hallmarked jewellery is found to have less purity than marked, the customer is entitled to compensation calculated at twice the amount of the purity shortfall for the article’s weight, plus testing charges. Does every gold article have to be hallmarked?
Do not assume that every gold article everywhere is subject to the same mandatory-hallmarking rule. BIS orders have amendments and exemptions, and the order index lists amendments dated 2 March 2026, 28 April 2026 and 3 August 2026; the page was last updated 1 September 2026. Coverage can depend on district and applicable exemptions. Check the current BIS Mandatory Hallmarking Order for the latest requirements before relying on a blanket claim.
