NOAA’s 2025 Atlantic fisheries report shows bluefin ex-vessel chart values of $6.26 to $7.89 per pound of dressed weight across the plotted 2021–2025 series, while its 2024 yellowfin monthly values ranged from $3.77 to $5.66 per dressed-weight pound. A San Diego dockside market’s October 2, 2026 list, by contrast, showed bluefin loin at $28 per pound and ahi filet at $16 per pound. Those figures are not directly comparable.
What does a fisher get for fresh-caught tuna?
The closest figure for what a fisher receives is the ex-vessel price: the price paid when fish are landed and sold into the supply chain. NOAA’s Atlantic highly migratory species report labels its tuna series “Average Ex-Vessel Price” and gives prices per pound of dressed weight. Its bluefin chart callouts span $6.26 to $7.89 per dressed-weight pound across the plotted 2021–2025 series; those callouts should not be read as a set of 2025 monthly prices. For yellowfin, the chart’s 2024 monthly observations range from $3.77 to $5.66 per dressed-weight pound. NOAA’s 2025 Atlantic HMS Fisheries Economic Situation Report provides the underlying charts.
These are historical fishery-level references, not a guaranteed offer for a catch today. A buyer’s actual quote depends on the fish, its quality and condition, where and when it is landed, and the terms of the sale. The published figures also use dressed weight, so they should not be applied to a whole-fish or trimmed-fillet pound without accounting for the different weight basis.
What does tuna cost at a dockside market?
A consumer-facing dockside price is a different point in the market chain. Tuna Harbor Dockside Market in San Diego listed these customer prices for the week of October 2, 2026:

These are examples from one local market’s dated list, not national prices or what fishers earned. The market says availability changes weekly, so check its current catch and price listing before relying on a figure.
Why tuna prices per pound are hard to compare
A price only makes sense when you know what was sold and how the pound was measured. A dressed fish, a whole fish, a loin, and a trimmed filet do not yield the same amount of edible meat. A consumer may pay more per pound for a prepared cut than a buyer pays for landed fish, but the two prices cover different products and stages of handling.

- Transaction stage: ex-vessel, wholesale, dockside retail, and other consumer retail prices answer different questions.
- Species: bluefin, yellowfin, ahi, and albacore are not interchangeable price categories.
- Form and weight: identify whether the price is for whole, dressed, loin, or filet weight.
- Quality and grade: compare offers only when the fish’s grade or quality terms are aligned.
- Place and date: local supply and market conditions change over time; a dated local listing is not a current national benchmark.
For trade-market comparisons, INFOFISH reports indicative prices by species, grade, product form, origin, and reference market. Its December 5, 2025 report includes distinct regional-market references, including Toyosu auction and U.S. wholesale contexts; those are not interchangeable with a fisher’s ex-vessel price or a current U.S. dockside quote. INFOFISH Trade News, No. 10&11/2025 is useful only when comparing like-for-like lines.
How to check a buyer’s quote or estimate a purchase
- Identify the transaction. Ask whether the quote is ex-vessel, wholesale, or a consumer price.
- Confirm the species and quality. Get the exact species and the buyer’s grade or quality criteria.
- Match the product form and weight basis. Confirm whether payment is based on whole, dressed, loin, or filet pounds.
- Check the date and location. Compare with prices for the same market and period, not an undated figure from elsewhere.
- Use the right benchmark. For an Atlantic ex-vessel reference, consult NOAA’s HMS charts; for a specific NOAA catch-shares program, use its own tool rather than treating it as a universal tuna price.
NOAA’s Southeast Fisheries Science Center says its catch-shares ex-vessel tool calculates a weighted average from the last three months of landings and updates monthly. It excludes reported values of $0.01 per pound; it may suppress an average for confidentiality when fewer than three dealers, vessels, or shareholders are represented. Those rules describe that particular program’s tool, not every NOAA price series. See NOAA’s Southeast catch-shares program information.

Why legal access and supply can affect a landing
Price is only part of valuing a catch: tuna fisheries operate under species-specific management and landing systems, and a fisher cannot assume any tuna can be landed and sold at any time. NOAA publishes year-specific Atlantic HMS landings updates, which are more relevant to current landing status than a broad consumer price list. Check NOAA’s Atlantic HMS landings updates.
As management context rather than a price prediction, NOAA announced in December 2025 an additional 231 metric tons of Atlantic bluefin allocation, described as a 17% increase in baseline quota and allowances, with the increased total allowable catch beginning in 2026. That allocation change does not establish what a buyer will pay per pound. NOAA’s announcement explains the 2026 allocation change.
