First, verify that the exchange actually liquidated your position: a stop-loss, manual order, bot, contract settlement, loan repayment or partial reduction can also close it. Save the exchange’s records, compare the event with the rules for your exact product and account, then ask support to explain the trigger and execution. A regulator complaint is an option only when the exchange entity, product and jurisdiction fall within that process.
1. Check what actually closed the position
A balance change or a position disappearing while you were away does not, by itself, prove forced liquidation. Review the exchange’s position history, order history and any liquidation or risk-event record. OKX specifically recommends checking these records because a position can close for other reasons. OKX’s forced-liquidation guidance also advises contacting support with the order ID and time if the records do not explain the closure.
- Look for a stop-loss or take-profit execution, a manual or reverse order, or an order placed by a bot.
- Check whether a futures contract expired or settled, a loan was repaid, or the position was reduced only in part.
- Match the closing order to any liquidation event shown in the account ledger. If the records use different labels, ask the exchange what each one means.
2. Preserve the records before investigating
Export statements and order or trade history if the exchange offers them. Save screenshots or downloads of the event and keep support messages with their case number. Record the details needed to reconstruct what happened:
- Instrument, contract and position mode.
- Order or liquidation ID, timestamp and time zone, and quantity closed.
- Displayed trigger price and the relevant reference price—mark, index or last price—as well as the execution or fill price.
- Margin mode, collateral or balance information, fees, remaining balance and any notifications received.
If information is missing from the interface, request the relevant event and transaction records from the exchange. Recordkeeping obligations differ by product and legal entity: CFTC guidance describes confirmations, monthly statements, account ledgers and transaction records for regulated U.S. futures commission merchants, but those specific requirements should not be assumed to apply to every crypto exchange or spot account. See the CFTC’s FCM recordkeeping guidance.

3. Compare the event with the venue’s rules
Read the current margin and contract terms for the legal entity serving your account, the relevant jurisdiction, the specific product and your account mode. Liquidation thresholds, reference prices, partial-close rules, fees and risk sequences are not uniform across platforms.
| Venue documentation | What it says for that product | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Crypto.com Exchange forced-liquidation article (dated February 8, 2024) | Liquidation is triggered when the Margin Wallet Balance falls below Maintenance Balance; assets and positions may be progressively auto-liquidated. The article describes restrictions and a fee for that product. | The displayed estimated liquidation price assumes other portfolio instrument prices remain unchanged. It is not necessarily the execution price. |
| Coinbase Global Exchange margin documentation | Describes initial, maintenance and close-out margin, partial liquidation below maintenance margin and further steps in a risk waterfall at lower thresholds. | A risk waterfall can involve multiple actions rather than a single all-at-once close. |
| Kraken margin-level guidance (last updated October 1, 2026) | Gives Kraken’s approximate margin-call threshold and says automated liquidation cannot be stopped once it has started. | That threshold and process describe Kraken’s rules, not a general crypto-market standard. |
Use the exchange’s ledger and order details to compare the closure type, trigger metric and recorded value, margin mode and collateral scope, whether liquidation was partial or full, execution prices and fees, and the rule clause the venue applied. A chart set to last price may not show a mark or index value used by the exchange. For example, Crypto.com’s estimated liquidation price is calculated under the assumptions stated in its own article; do not treat an estimate as proof of the actual trigger or fill.

4. Ask support specific questions
Contact the exchange through its official support channel. Include your order or liquidation ID and the event time, and ask for the records or explanation that would resolve the discrepancies you found. Keep the reply and case number.
- Which metric and threshold triggered the event, and what value did the exchange record?
- Was the closure partial or full? What sequence of risk actions occurred?
- Which prices determined the trigger and the fills? How were fees calculated?
- Did other orders, positions or collateral affect the result?
- Where is the applicable contract or margin rule published, and which legal entity handled the account?
A dispute alone does not establish that a liquidation will be reversed or reimbursed. Ask the venue to substantiate the trigger and execution under the applicable terms before drawing that conclusion.

5. Use a complaint route only if it covers your case
Identify the contracting exchange entity and whether the transaction involved spot trading, a loan, a future, a perpetual or another derivative. Support escalation and a regulator’s complaint process are different routes, and eligibility depends on the product, entity and jurisdiction.
If the provider is covered by EU MiCA complaint rules
Article 71 of Regulation (EU) 2023/1114 (MiCA) requires covered crypto-asset service providers to maintain and publish complaint procedures, allow customers to file complaints free of charge, inform customers of that option and make a complaint template available. Whether a particular provider and service are covered—and which competent authority or remedy applies—depends on the case.

If the case concerns a U.S. futures professional
The CFTC Reparations Program is a forum for complaints against futures professionals registered with the CFTC at the time of the alleged wrongdoing or when the complaint is filed. It is not a general appeal process for every crypto exchange or spot transaction. Check the CFTC’s current complaint and Reparations information for eligibility and filing instructions. The CFTC also accepts tips and complaints about suspected Commodity Exchange Act violations; its virtual-currency customer advisory explains risks and a route for reporting suspected fraud. It warns that much of the virtual-currency cash market operates on internet platforms that may be unregulated and unsupervised.
