A futures hedge can offset price movements more linearly, but it brings margin demands and can force you to add funds or close the position during an adverse move. Neither approach guarantees a particular result; the better fit depends on the contract, cost, hedge size, expiration, venue and your jurisdiction.
These are complex derivatives, not a substitute for understanding the risks of the crypto you hold. This is general educational information, not a personal recommendation.
How futures and options differ as hedges
A futures contract is an agreement to buy or sell an asset at a future date at a price set when the contract is made. A futures position gains or loses as the contract price moves, so it can offset some of the price exposure of crypto you own. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) describes futures and options as tools that hedgers may use to reduce exposure to price changes, while warning that speculation in them is high risk. See the CFTC’s virtual-currency trading advisory and futures trading guide.
A futures option gives its purchaser the right, but not the obligation under the option’s terms, to buy or sell a futures contract at a specified price and date. A put option is the type a holder might investigate for downside protection: its terms may provide value as the underlying futures price falls. The buyer pays an option price, and the exact outcome depends on the contract and its settlement rules.

Which is more suitable for protecting crypto you own?
Purchased put options: defined option cost, conditional protection
A purchased put is often the more direct option to investigate when your aim is to protect against a decline while retaining upside in the crypto you hold. The option has a specified exercise price and expiration; its price is a cost, and any protection depends on the option’s terms, the futures price and the period covered. It does not automatically create a guaranteed floor for the value of your spot holdings.
Options also require attention to what happens at expiry. For example, CME Group says its cryptocurrency options reference futures rather than spot coins. Its current FAQ on options on cryptocurrency futures describes European-style exercise and says in-the-money options are automatically exercised, while out-of-the-money options are abandoned. In most cases, an in-the-money option delivers the underlying futures position; Bitcoin Friday options use a separate financial-settlement method. Neither CME’s options nor their underlying futures deliver actual cryptocurrency. These are CME-specific terms, not rules for every exchange or contract.

Futures: a more linear offset, with margin risk
A futures hedge can offset a decline in the value of crypto you own in a roughly linear way if the contract tracks the same exposure and the hedge is sized appropriately. That relationship is not exact in every case: the futures reference, contract size, settlement method and timing can differ from your holdings.
Futures are typically margined. In a leveraged position, the amount deposited may be only a fraction of the underlying exposure. If the market moves against the position, the broker or exchange may require additional margin or close it. The CFTC warns that losses may exceed the initial amount invested. A hedge’s theoretical payoff is separate from the venue’s margin and liquidation rules: a position intended to offset losses in your crypto holdings may still face funding pressure or forced closure before that offset serves its purpose.

Compare the practical trade-offs
| Consideration | Purchased option | Futures hedge |
|---|---|---|
| Downside and upside | Has a defined exercise price and expiration; the buyer pays an option price. A put can provide exposure to a decline under its terms while leaving the crypto holding’s upside intact, but it does not guarantee a floor. | Can offset price changes in a roughly linear way, but also creates exposure to adverse price moves. The hedge’s effect depends on its size and how closely the contract matches the holding. |
| Funding pressure | The option buyer pays the option price. Exercise or settlement may create a futures position or cash settlement depending on the specific contract. | Margin calls or forced closure may occur during adverse moves; losses can exceed the initial deposit, according to the CFTC’s U.S. advisory. |
| At expiration | Exercise, delivery and settlement are contract-specific. CME’s options generally deliver a futures position when in the money, with some financially settled contracts. | Settlement terms depend on the futures contract. Check whether it is financially settled and how its reference price is determined. |
| Matching the hedge | Check the underlying reference, contract size, expiration, settlement index and amount of exposure covered. | Check the same details; contract sizes and references vary among products. |
What to check before choosing a contract
- Reference asset and price: Confirm what the contract tracks and how its settlement index or auction price is determined. Spot-market price changes can affect derivatives, but the relationship and settlement reference matter.
- Size: Compare contract size with the amount of crypto you want to hedge. A mismatch can leave part of your exposure uncovered or create a larger derivatives position than intended.
- Expiration and duration: Match the contract’s end date to the period of risk you want to address. A hedge that expires earlier than the exposure leaves later price movements unhedged.
- Exercise and settlement: Read the specific contract specification to determine whether exercise creates a futures position, results in cash settlement, or follows another stated method. Do not assume a derivatives contract delivers coins.
- Liquidity and venue rules: Consider whether the contract can be traded at the times you need and understand the venue’s margin, close-out and settlement procedures. Product availability and schedules can change.
- Jurisdiction and eligibility: Verify the broker, venue registration, local access rules and applicable protections. A regulated derivatives venue does not make every crypto spot platform regulated in the same way.
U.S. regulation and the limits of venue protections
The CFTC states that Bitcoin and other virtual currencies have been determined to be commodities under the Commodity Exchange Act. Its primary oversight concerns commodity derivatives, while its oversight of cash markets is more limited. It cautions that some cash platforms may lack government supervision and system safeguards, and advises customers offered virtual-currency futures or options to verify CFTC registration. This is U.S.-specific guidance, not a conclusion about laws in other countries.
CME Group says its cryptocurrency futures are listed on a U.S.-registered designated contract market and derivatives clearing organization regulated by the CFTC. That status applies to the venue and products it describes; it should not be generalized to all crypto platforms. CME also notes that accounting and regulatory treatment varies by country. Check local eligibility and consider qualified professional guidance where appropriate.
