Two reports published a day apart gave different worldwide totals. Keep their figures tied to their respective outlets and dates rather than treating them as one reconciled number.

Variety’s domestic figure was also reported by the Los Angeles Times as a Comscore estimate. The published totals are not identical, and the available reports do not reconcile the difference.
How does the opening compare with the reported budget?
Variety put production spending at about $200 million; the Los Angeles Times also cited a roughly $200 million production cost, attributing the figure to Variety. These are reported estimates, not an audited final budget disclosure in the cited accounts. Against that approximate production figure, either reported global opening-weekend gross was more than twice as large.

Variety separately estimated roughly $100 million in promotion spending. Promotion is not part of the production-budget figure, so comparing the gross only with production cost leaves out a substantial reported expense—and still does not establish a film’s total costs.
Does box-office gross mean the studio recovered its costs?
No. Box-office gross is the total value of tickets sold, not the amount the studio necessarily receives. The cited reports do not establish the theaters’ and distributors’ contractual shares, the studio’s net receipts, or the full set of costs and revenues needed to calculate profit. The opening-weekend comparison supports saying that reported ticket sales exceeded the reported production budget; it does not prove that the studio had recouped all spending or was profitable after two days.

What did Disney mean by the record claim?
Disney described the film’s July 28, 2024 debut as the highest-grossing global opening for an R-rated film at that time. That is a dated record claim from the studio’s announcement, not evidence of a current all-time ranking.
